I follow the Birch trees to the water, it's a thirsty tree, always near water. Easy to spot from a long distance away. This tree has saved many lives, provide you with food, drink and fire, if you know how. To me, it's the 2nd place spot of the trees of life. I don't see to many pines here in my part of Pa.. However, I learned some more from you and others. 50 years from now, less people like us, able to identify any tree. GOD bless.

Any books on the kind of learning that you would recommend?

Yes! "Reading the Forested Landscape" by David Wessels and "The Natural Navigator" by Tristan Gooley are two great starting places.

Would your drink that water knowing. I have always heard that hemlocks were poisonness. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Tsuga canadensis is the Hemlock Tree. Water Hemlock (Cicuta maculata) and Poison Hemlock (Conium maculate) are herbs related to wild carrot in the Umbrillifeae or "carrot" family.

Good awareness. This belt of open hardwoods is the "sweet spot" between human back yards and coyote comfort. Most farmers here hunt coyotes at night and the deer here take advantage of this buffer.
