Others make it look so easy, tap centering a piece for trimming with just a few quick tap.
I wanted to have a go at learning to tap center a pot to improve my pottery skill set, also it looks cool.

It's fun to learn little quality of life improvement skills like this, not to mention it looks cool when it works right away.

This is the best tap centering video! I watched it 3 years ago, lost it and I found again, I’m so happy)))

Sir, I have seen and heard how this is done. Your discovery and demonstration was very insightful. Well done. Thank you.

One thing I love about pottery is that there is no one right way to do almost anything! I was taught several different methods to centre and I've always seen people doing this tapping method, curious as to how it really works, now I know :D thank you for bringing us along with you on your learning journey!

I love seeing you figure this out. I still struggle with this.

I haven't mastered that yet but I'm inspired to try again tomorrow when I trim a couple of bowls. I really enjoy watching your videos because you haven't been a production potter for 20 years and have everything mastered already. That was cool to see you succeed.

Thank you! I can't wait to look back at these videos 20 years from now! The RU-vid channel is part marketing part documenting the journey, and hopefully grow together with other potters.

I think what you're seeing (and I'm probably wrong) is the gyroscopic effect - you know, when you were a kid and had a gyroscope which you would start with some string and gradually, the top would ascribe a circular motion around its base.. Rigidity is the ability of a freely rotating mass to maintain its plane of spin when any external force is applied to it. First Law Of Gyroscopes: If a rotating wheel is so maintained as to be free to move about any axis passing through its centre of mass, its spin axis will remain fixed in space. Second Law Of Gyroscopes: When a torque acts on a spinning mass with an axis perpendicular to that of spin, then the latter will precess about an axis perpendicular to both aforementioned axes. (courtesy of pigeonsnest.co.uk). This angular precession will try to stabilise the position of the pot (I think?).
