To take this idea further, compared to other team sports, baseball is like a series of duels. The pitcher and batter duel. Then if the batter hits, it’s a duel between them and the position player. And if the position player fields the ball, it’s a duel between them and the runner (either a runner already on base, or the batter himself). Contact with the ball is rare enough, and solid hits are even more so. Position players aka fielders have zones they cover, and will frequently adjust their place within that zone based on how they think the batter will hit (do they pull the ball, or push? How many runners are on base? Can we convert a stop into a double play and end the inning?). Baseball is often decided by just a few moments, and literally any team can win any game because all it takes is one spectacular play to clinch a game. Unlike most other team sports, a superstar can’t carry the team by themselves (maybe a superstar pitcher, but they only play 1 out of every 4-6 games). Baseball is about averages, and statistics. Superstars may not win you every game, because a fluke hit by a bench player may decide X game, but on average over the course of 162 games, it’s the teams with the superstars (or a really good coach with a great game plan) who win their divisions and take the pennant.

A batter has to have an approach, a plan. Basically, the batter is looking for a specific pitch in a specific location. Most batters are looking for a fastball, either high or low, inside or outside. It's nearly impossible to cover the whole plate, so you have to pick a zone. You try not to swing at any pitch except the one you're preparing for. If you can lay off the garbage pitches -- and force the pitcher to throw one over the plate -- then your odds of getting a hit go up exponentially. The pitchers study the batters and the batters study the pitchers to learn their strengths, weaknesses and tendencies.

the first line of defense the batter has to get through is the pitcher/catcher, together they are called the battery, if you watch a game you will see the catcher giving signals to the pitcher on what type of pitch he wants.The pitcher is an infielder he is only a pitcher when he touches the rubber then there are very specific rules on how he has to behave, if he violates them it's called a balk.

If you want to see the best change up pitcher, watch videos of Jamie Moyer. His fastball sucked. His fastball topped out at about 85 mph. But, that guy could throw every pitch for a strike at totally different speeds. He'd throw it 85, then 72, then 79, then 66. Then 85 again. Batters got so frustrated they could never establish their timing. He could also paint the corners. Also, since he threw it so slow, he never blew out his arm and played until he was 48 years old, which is absolutely shocking. There are 7 other MLB players who were older, but most were in the game a hundred years ago or nearly that. Back when the game was totally different. He's one of my baseball heroes. Not super famous, but super awesome, nonetheless!

Tim Wakefield was on a baseball team in the minors and was playing 1st base and the manager of the farm team saw he was a good knuckleball pitcher so they switched him to pitching and that is how he made it to the major leagues.

Just FYI, when a young person gets signed in baseball, they don't join the major league team right away. Unlike basketball and football, baseball has a minor league system. Players start in the minor leagues and often play there for years before they get "called up" to the big league team. The highest level, AAA, feeds the major league team. Then below that there are several others levels like AA, then A, and so on. I don't recall all the divisions. Each major league baseball team has its own set of minor league teams in towns across the US and Canada.

A well located Fastball will always be the best pitch on baseball

A follow up about a pitcher’s arsenal: generally speaking, a pitcher will know how to pitch 2+ types of fastballs, and 2+ types of breaking balls, and a change up, they generally only use their 3-5 best pitches. Fastball specialists might have multiple fastballs, and maybe only 1 breaking ball, if even that. They might rely on a moving fastball, like the sinker, the cutter, or a splitter instead of a traditional breaking ball. Conversely, a breaking ball specialist will have an array of breaking balls, some that move down, some that curve to the left, and some that curve to the right, and will adjust their placement depending on the batter’s handedness (left-handed batters can see a right-handed throw from a different angle than right-handed batters, and vice versa, and the same movement in a pitch looks wildly different depending on what side of the plate you’re standing on).

A Perfect game for a pitcher is pitching 9 innings and not giving up a hit; not walking a batter; and not hitting a batter. So 27 batters come up and all 27 batters make outs.

Most players play college and are recruited and scouted and have to try out and play minor league ball for a while before the majors. A no hitter is a game where no one gets a legal hit but might get on base with an error or a walk. They are thrown more often than perfect games. A perfect game is an absolutely amazing achievement. It’s when no one gets on base. 3 batters up and 3 batters out every half inning. The pitcher must complete the full 9 innings of pitching. Only 24 people in 150 years of mlb have ever pitched a perfect game. Up until the early 1990’s more people had walked on the moon than thrown a perfect game.

Sometimes, there is a trend too, such as fork ball in late 90s, sinker in mid 2000 since. Slider n splits are the most common use most of the time.

A perfect game is when a pitcher (and his team) doesn't allow a hit, walk, or allow a batter to reach first base - even on an error - (or any subsequent bases) for the entire game. It is the rarest feat for a pitcher. A pitcher can still throw a "no-hitter" without it being a perfect game. If a batter reaches first base on an error by the opposing team, or gets on base due to being walked, or hit by a pitch, the pitcher can still be credited for a "no-hitter" (which is still rare), but only a handful of "no-hitters" in the history of baseball have been "perfect games". I don't even understand why they bothered to cover the efus...or however they spell it. No one throws it...ever. You might see it once every 5 years. A pitcher who throws it might be cocking about as a joke just to see if they can strike a batter out, with that pitch being the third strike. Wakefield being moved from a first baseman to a pitcher because he could throw a knuckleball is WAY different than a dude who isn't even on a team to begin with. Wakefield was already contracted on a team. There are only two people like that I can think of in the last 20 years that were just an average "Joe" and signed because of a video.

There was just a huge scandal with the World-Series winning Astros, who were stealing signs. Signs are the signals a catcher gives a pitcher to let him know what he wants him to throw. If the pitcher doesn't agree, he will 'shake it off', by shaking his head and asking for another sign, until he gets the pitch he wants to throw. The Astros figured out other teams signs, and had a variety of ways of communicating the coming pitch, most infamously by beating a trashcan in the dugout to signal what pitch was coming. It got real deep, as further news showed that they were also using a computer program called Codebreaker to decode opposing catcher's signs.
