Learning to Cast Metal - Feeders

All alloys shrink, some like frightened turtles. Feeders are used to control unacceptable levels of shrinkage in our molds. There are four pours in the video with various feeder placements to illustrate the effects of good placement and bad placement.

I get asked about the moisture content of my sand. I have settled on a ratio of about 2 liters of sand and 36-42ish ml of water for my ratio. I start with sand that is dry.

Nice video series! For this episode I liked how you presented a controlled experiment with various configurations. Actually using the scientific method is as rare as hen's teeth on RU-vid. Well done. I wish you had lingered on the side view. It was a very clear graphic. Cheers from Juneau Alaska, Greg Chaney

Yeah, I kinda felt the same way about the side view. I had to shoot that ending sequence so many times I almost forgot about it. That's why it feels so rushed. You can always hit the pause button. 😄 I almost mentioned you when I held up that aluminum bronze but didnt want to throw gasoline on that horse show fire 😄😄

Part 2 is showing classic re-entrant angle shrinkage at the plate 'L" to boss junction at 12:20 as voids. Some exothermic on top of feeders would help in all cases... thanks for your posting. TheSilversheeps exothermic hot top typically isn’t used on aluminum alloy, nor graphite. But insulated riser sleeves would help keep the riser hot longer than the casting thus helping with additional feed metal. Exothermic hot top is “generally” used for iron & steel. Actually I have never seen anyone use exo for aluminum...

olfoundryman uses exothermic on his feeders for aluminum all the time ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Xw6O7biXBM.html You can see it burning on the mold to the left and then eventually see the mold he just poured catch fire

@@swdweeb and Nate, well time to check out www.vesuvius.com/en/our-solutions/en-us/foundry/investment-casting/feeding-compounds-for-investment-casting.html look for Feedol-9 from foseco at bottom, of page. i have used, and it's equivalent it for many decades as 18% is typical heat loss just through riser tops. i tested a riser with a T tip and got 50 degrees C additional heat in the riser from using non ferrous exothermic. has a lower ignition point on purpose for aluminium work. and mixed with sodium silicate for making your own sleeves can make or break a casting job. This was one of your best videos. I learned quite a lot about how the feeders and vents are related and the feeder can effect the vents. Amazing how the main part was affected. The camera setup is great. I see you went with my patented overhead shot idea, lol. We could really see how everything was filling, especially when you had the feeder right over the part. Amazing what you miss when you are so busy paying attention to how you pour the metal. I also noticed in your shot that if you make any mistake while pouring while wearing shorts and sneakers with short socks that you are gonna be in a world of hurt when it spills and runs down your leg. I love you man, you taught me a lot and that we need to be safe. Wear more safety gear. Please. Get an apron, spats, and wear leather boots. If even only for the pour. I know it’s uncomfortable when it’s hot out, but do it so you can keep on doing it and teach more people about this great hobby. Your friend. Norbert

I guess in the end it doesn't matter what you call them. You can call them planes, trains, and automobiles, no one will know what you're talking about but as Bob Ross said, it's your world. I simply find it easier to call them what they do. What is more important is understanding their function and understanding what is happening within the mold.

Good basic feeder/riser intro. Next up you will have to get into the more complicated subjects of feeder/riser sizing, Feed distance (how far from the feeder can the feeder/riser actually feed), Feed distance then gets into the topic of when to use multiple feeders, and then the use of blind feeder/risers.

@@scottcochran8723 I've seen guys make aluminum molds to cast aluminum in, that's crazy. It takes special equipment and material to coat the mold with. I don't have any of that. You could probably make one out of steel but you'd probably want to machine the edges between the cope and drag so it seals up really well when closed. I don't have a mill so that's out of the question. Look at olfoundryman channel. He has videos on die casting and "lens blank" and "tilt casting" . Like I said, special equipment. The lens blanks are aluminum molds that he pours aluminum into.

Interesting. I had done some yellow brass vacuum assist lost wax castings in ceramic shell. There were two necked down areas that were cracking due to the part being restrained by the shell as it cooled and shrunk (shrank?) We added what we called “shrink balls” to feed the problem areas. They were very small compared to your feeders. I think that a big difference with the ceramic shell is that the burnout process ends with the shell being taken out of the kiln at 485 degrees C and molten alloy poured at that elevated temperature. So the alloy remains molten long enough for the tiny shrink balls to do their thing. The part cross section was about 22mm and the necked down area only about 12mm. The shrink balls were 10mm balls on a 4mm stalk.
@swdweeb
@swdweeb 3 года назад
Probably shrank, but I grew up with the past-tense of squeeze being squoze so I can handle shrunk 😄 Interesting on the use of shrink balls. My feeder was clearly much larger than it needed to be, but it's what I had laying around so it's what I used. You might be right on the temperature of the mold making a difference. I've never done a mold that was warmer than the ambient temperature of my garage so I have zero experience on the effects of a lesser temperature gradient. I know people bake sand molds as well.

Unfortunately the software I use doesn't export step files. What do you need to know so that you can just model them yourself? I'm happy to give you any information I can. The cross-sectional area of the runner is the same area as the bottom of the tapered sprue. The gate can be any size. If it is larger than the runner the metal will enter the mold more slowly.
