Hey everyone, it's been a while. I have several videos in the process and have been trying to work around various obstacles that are preventing the completion of these videos. Here is the first video in a series I will be doing as I learn to TIG and take those skills into new projects that I am wanting to do. If there are any projects that you would like to see me tackle, please leave a note in the description.

Thanks for the info, I have only tried stick welding and thought I had a lot to learn about mig welding, now after this video I find there is another form of welding. The rate I am going at I don't think I have enough life left to sort all this out, I was happily ignorant of all I had to learn, now I am just overwhelmed. Thanks again

Hahaha. I know what you are saying. I love MIG welding, but the artistic look of TIG was just too compelling for me to pass up. I can't wait to use the skill on new projects.

Harneal Media Thanks Steve. I became possessed with the idea of learning to TIG at last years WorkBenchCon and finally it’s becoming a reality. Practice proactive practice. Until I own the skill.

CrypticWorks what kind of welding are you considering. I’m no expert, but I’ve got experience with Flux-core and MiG. Well and I can now speak unintelligently about TIG.
@Pryorfab
@Pryorfab 5 лет назад
@@ManCrafting today my wife asked about learning welding. I am just as inexperienced as her and I believe MIG might be the way to go to learn generic welding. It'll likely need to be a 120 machine, but an optional 120/240 would work since we have access to 240 at my folks house, and could do welding at that shop too. No clue where to start, looked at HF welders to get a ballpark price on entry level stuff, but we really need to take a class or get a personal lesson from someone who knows welding.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 5 лет назад
CrypticWorks I started with a HF 90. Avoid that if your budget allows. Something in the 140 range. Many brands to chose from. Most will be able to handle both Flux and MIG. If you’re trying to ease into it, flux is cheaper and if you have to weld outside isn’t impacted by wind. It’s messy though. I do have a tips video for beginners. I’ll add a link. MiG was a great step up. Way cleaner and still relatively easy. Just adding a Gas cylinder versus flux coated wire. Welding is one of those skills that can be really useful. I don’t do it for a living so for me it’s an absolute joy. I really love welding. Kind of like using a hot glue gun for metal.

See Jody's channel weldingtipsandtricks or the fabrication series. These are the best Tig channels I've found and where I learned to Tig. It is a bit overwhelming at first but then one day it clicks and starts getting fun. I became one of the best tungsten sharpeners around in the process.

lol I have to say I've had to sharpen a few tungstens every time I practice. I suppose expert status on at least one component of TIG welding is in my near future. I have been watching Jody and believe it or not was hanging out with him at a conference last week for RU-vidrs. He graciously offered to give me help if needed. I have been plowing through his TIG videos already.

@ManCrafting 5 лет назад
Steve Pepin haha. I didn’t see this comment. I happen to be pretty good friends with JD from APEX Welding. Jody and JD are pretty much best friends. Most of the videos Jody shoots are in JD’s shop. So I’m an acquaintance of Jody’s and have met him on half a dozen occasions since 2016. That said, I met him here on RU-vid first. 😁

gamble1997 haha. Funny you mention that. I noticed people generally sit. I brought a stool out to my shed. So much easier to keep the torch handle steady. Great tip. One that I’ve already dismissed. I need to make a point of that.

Chad I learned to weld when I worked at a local welding shop after school back in the early 70s starting with OxyAcetylene then DC stick. We did have HeliArc that I used on occasion. To me HeliArc seems to be just OxyAcetylene welding, but with electricity instead of fire and I approached it that way. You may be having troubles with your foot pedal (if you are using one), I learned without one. You may wish to try practicing with your settings fixed (0.5sec before, 5-10seconds after) depending on how long it takes to cool (stop glowing). If your torch has a switch you may wish to try setting it for 2T and use that as an on-off, mostly for the gas. Helium (HeliArc) and the exotic mixes aren't used much any more, you should probably just use 100% Argon.
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 5 лет назад
Papa Jon I started with fixed settings. Completely by accident. I have a second video on this coming out soon. Adding the pedal makes this a whole new game.
@papajon6715
@papajon6715 5 лет назад
(lol) It is ALWAYS by accident. I stopped by the shop I worked at back then and got a refresher stick course (worked free for a week doing piddly repetitive jobs) and I was amazed at how much I remembered after a day or two...

Downslope 3 sec is to stop you getting a pinhole or crater at the end weld post gas 4 sec to cool your tungsten and weld pre gas 1 sec to purge your line of air and to put gas into your weld area before weld upslope I don't use to start on a corner so you don't break the edge or to give you time to focus on start up. There's alot of setings for the machine that was just DC then DC pulse pulse width depends on materials same base amps and peaks amps. Then there's ac with AC balance and frequency which means how quick it changes
@ManCrafting

the only thing i would say man is dump the heavy duty welding jackets gloves etc. get some light weight tig gloves. pig skin gloves are great. light jacket just to protect from rays. remember theres no sparks and spatter to worry about so might as well be comfortable
@ManCrafting
@ManCrafting 4 года назад
Jason good tips. I definitely have lighter gloves. I suppose long sleeve cotton shirts would be sufficient.

HeliArc is different than any of the electric welding processes, you'll find yourself standing in one spot, and because it takes concentration you'll find you haven't moved except to grab another rod from the tube on the table and it's now past going home time and you only know that because the boss switched off the lights. Unfortunately YOU'RE the boss. Anyway as you are not exactly a 'young punk kid' anymore your body may not like standing still for hours. Please consider making yourself a clamp-on welding stool and a parts rotator. It needn't be a fancy or expensive one, a guy on one channel is using his wife's old manual foot powered modeling clay pot rotating thingy that he mounted under and through the table top. The reason I say 'clamp-on' is that it will take a while till you find what's comfortable for you. As for me since being crippled I have been having body parts replaced with robot parts to the point I believe I an officially a cyborg...
