Today is our first time making Zongzi or Joong in Cantonese, which is a Chinese sticky rice dumpling that is wrapped in bamboo leaves. This is a traditional Chinese food that is usually made once a year for the Dragon Boat Festival. This festival is on the 5th day of the 5th month on the lunar calendar which usually lands around late May/June.
Angie and I both grew up eating joong made by older relatives. There are different varieties of joong, which include savory ones with meat and without meat, and sweet kinds made with alkaline water or bean paste. These differences can be from the different provinces where they originated from and were made. I grew up eating savory Cantonese joong with pork belly, Chinese sausage, salted egg yolks, and peanuts/chestnuts. I remember my grandma would be sitting on a stool with all the ingredients lined up around her and she would spend many hours wrapping joong. As a kid, I would sit next to her and watch her and occasionally placing some of the filling items in the bamboo leaves as she wrapped it.
We had a lot of fun learning from the master how to wrap joong. It was a struggle to wrap them in the beginning but once we wrapped a few, it became easier and easier. Next year, we'll make them for family and for my grandma to enjoy!

My Chinese neighbor used to make these, and she was always so nice to make extras for us. Had no idea how much work was put into them. Rest In Peace Mrs. Leong.

This video is so heartwarming, I’ve been missing my family so much during this quarantine. I live in SoCal and my family lives in San Francisco. I haven’t been able to visit them since February. Love hearing you guys speaks Cantonese.

I lived in SoCal for a few years during college and after college. After moving back a few years ago, I really appreciate being able to see and spend time with family as often as we do. I hope you are able to visit your family soon once the quarantine eases up!

Thank you for sharing this traditional zongzi, it's very important for the younger generation to continue this. Just to let you know that it wasn't a 'critter' that you found (@ 2:38). It was the end part of each leaf. If you open the bamboo leaves package, you will see inside it, 'the critters' are inside the plastic package :) Nevertheless, your grandma is right we still need to wipe the leaves down.

What precious memories you are sharing with popo! Even if I don't ever learn to make it as perfectly as my grandma, I still enjoyed watching her when I was growing up. I so wished I had the opportunity to film her while she was still here. I'm hoping to try to make joong for new year's and I'm going on memories and the help of the internet.

Haha love it! This is like asian grandmas. You try following them and boom, suddenly their done and you're still on step one haha. Does your grandma give you proper recipes or like random made up measurements that you'll never be able to recreate?
@jasonandangie7730
@jasonandangie7730 4 года назад
That’s exactly what happened lol I have asked her many times on how to cook certain dishes and it’s always, “Add a little bit of this and that and that’s it.” Measurements aren’t ever given and I just have to try to make it with trial and error haha

This is great! This is so close to how my PohPoh and YeeMa use to make, from what I remember anyways. I wish I was smart enough to have grabbed the old camcorder to video them making food. They use to make this other type of joong, it's basically like this, but the rice was not mushy it was harder?! I don't know if it was different type of rice or was cooked less time?! I think it was called Jeng Mai Joong. Did your family every make that? I hope I explained it ok. I've never seen it made anywhere else. It can't just be my family that made it?!

It’s always heartwarming to hear this video reminds viewers of joong their family used to make! We’re glad it brought back memories of how your PohPoh and YeeNa made them ☺️. I’ve never heard of Jeng Mai Joong and don’t recall eating it, BUT I happen to be with my mom right now and asked her. She immediately knew what it was! And she said my grandmothers used to make them and confirmed the rice is not as soft. We hope you get to eat some tasty joongs this coming holiday!
