Thanks for the lesson. Very clearly demonstrated the benefits of the two tuning systems. It is really beautiful to hear when you play in multiple octaves.
Thanks for the great lesson and mentioning tetra chords. TCs really opened up my knowledge of scales and allows me to easily switch between instruments with different tunings (mandolin, lap steel etc). I’m retuning my Weisenborn right now!
Thank you for the valuable content in this video.Very informative and rare .It will be helpful to the students like me, who are depending on social media for their classes.
One thing I learnt from your style of tuning is that on some scales its really easy to memorize the notes on fretboard and also make playing easy when it comes to carnatic music. I really Carnatic music because of the beautiful slides between the notes. Always love watching your videos. So much to learn and so little lifetime left.
Very great explanation sir.. Thank you for this video. It is like you have explained the two different world of music (western and eastern) in to one video and showed that all music have come from same origin that is the god almighty.
Yes, sir. U r super talented and pioneer of Classical guitar. I too try what u said. Will try in Sa-pa-sa tuning on my yamaha f 310 acoustic guitar...👍👍🤝👌🙏🙏
Constructing swara pattern on western fret looks tough as you mentioned. I try to use note-swara mapping to assume a different apparent scale position when fret position shifts. not sure if this is efficient. Keyboard helped me to reduce ambiguity. It would be wonderful to know if you have any mapping methodology or fret picturization. The way you played thodi Ragamorphism is beyond words. You have been a real inspiration.
This was very informative sir. There are not many sources where we can find such information for Guitarists. Please share more lessons like this. And how is that you change film songs to carnatic variants so gracefully. It always astonishes me...you are awesome.
I completely agree with you! Prasanna sir is the only guitarist who plays Carnatic in a guitar. I have always fantasised Carnatic music with rock guitar tuning. I am a Carnatic violinist and was hoping to learn guitar. Now I can play the guitar with the same tuning as my violin!
That was an amazing tutorial sir. Suggest me a way please. I play Spanish instrumentals and I'm interested in learning Carnatic music and implement it in my guitar playing style. I'm really craving for Carnatic knowledge. God Bless You Sir.
Prasanna-ji - excellent video. Thought I'll share with you what I use for playing Hindustani classical music on the guitar. I use an Open-D tuning for the most part (DADF#AD). For ragas that need a komal-gandhar, the F# string is tuned down to an F. The tonic and the 5th are always available and the major third can be brought down based on the need. Secondly, this open D tuning is especially useful when the "chikari" note needs to be played. Since I play in the middle octave, the high D can be used as a chikari. Lastly, it matches the standard tuning of my teacher's instrument - the Sitar :). Would love to hear your thoughts. Best wishes.
Which electric guitar is better for Carnatic classical music: Fender Stratocaster / Ibanez / any other with dual humbucker pickup configuration? Thanks in advance... ♥️ #deydreams ♥️
So cool. That tetra chord has been around as long as music. I plan to try these tunings in my guitar synth so I don't actually have to re-tune the strings but have a long way to go to sound good. Would you say I should study Gamakas in order to begin learning how to play a 'major scale' in that style or is that different? It seems a little different. I saw a vocalist teaching Gamakas. Your student Maya is great and is how I found your page.
I have a question. While for a multi style concert or something purely based on Western music, you would tune your guitar to the equal temperament, how does it work for a purely carnatic concert? How do you fix your Sa and Pa? Do you use an electronic tuner or some other aid to get a Just tuned 5th?
Do you think it's possible to play difficult/complicated Carnatic music in standard tuning? I don't like how this tuning takes the E all the way to a B (need much higher gauge strings). Also, most Carnatic music seems to have single note drones as the rhythm section, do chord progressions exist or are they common?
Sir, do you think fretless guitar can bring more raga bhava to carnatic music. ? if so, did you try your hands on fretless guitars ? .. I must say I am a big fan of yours.
If you want to use a standard western tuner app, you need to be careful and make some adjustments. I have demonstrated this in a video in my channel (you can click on the icon to get to it).
Sir, is it necessary to learn Carnatic vocal before learning Instrumental ie., Mandolin, Guitar? You are so great that every learner can understand and follow you. First time listening such a Melodious de demo. So many thanks to you, Sir🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 Thank you so much
I am a Carnatic violin student.we tune like that.but on the violin you can't go that low as it only has 4 strings.sir,I want to learn guitar and ukulele.which should I learn as a beginner
The problem of the placement of frets remains. Guitar frets are placed according to temperate tuning (half-step = twelfth root of 2), while Indian music uses Pythagorean tuning. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_tuning
Western tuning base on with rhythm cords and fingering, Indian classical tuning is more comfortable to play raga with tuning of just mandolin, Thanks for tuning idea, ~ dushyant bhatt
That’s not a bad idea but it wouldn’t be ideal in some cases because not all ragas have a major third (e). They might have a different ga, whereas pa stays constants in any raga. Cgcgcg would work or any set of fifths but adding e might make things harder for no reason.
