I have recently put both dogs on prong collars and what a game changer. About two weeks ago, we were coming out of the training yard, when the dogs caught sight of something that triggered their prey drive, I never saw what it was. I had both leashes in one hand and as they instantly hit a 0 - 60 prey drive, they've done this before, but I was ready for it by staying vigilant. I was jerked forward and onto the ground, the dogs immediately stopped and focused on me like I've trained them to do. By day two I was feeling it, I had what felt like whiplash, my knees/elbows were scuffed up and my usual chronic pain was off the charts. For safety reasons, I felt it necessary and long overdue, when walking two dogs at one time, it's hard to watch for prey drive triggers, cars and manage ecollar corrections. Ecollars will still be used for their one-on-one training sessions. I love how the prong collar correction is immediate and, in some instances, automatically applied like when lunging at cars, a firm leash pop means a hell of allot more as well. It's sad that electronic and prong collars are two of the most misunderstood but highly effective training tools.

@MiracleK9Training 8 месяцев назад
Glad you’re liking them and it’s working for you. Pretty drive is generally better addressed in more controlled off leash scenarios (in a fenced area or on a long line) with the ecollar. You can stop it there so that on your walk they already know they can’t do it.
@cherylmillard2067
@cherylmillard2067 8 месяцев назад
Using the ecollar and or just a verbal recall I could correct loading or call them off a squirrel, a cat running through a yard across the street or people walking their dog along the fence, they were great in the training yard on/off leash and long line, the issue was on walks when (without loading, that's why I missed it) something would set off their prey drive, usually at night a few times during the day, a cat, a pattern resembling a cat, and birds like the peacocks/crows and without a hint take off after it, I never knew when this was going to happen. The last straw was the accident, I can't risk getting hurt, it could be worse next time. @@MiracleK9Training

@cherylmillard2067
@cherylmillard2067 8 месяцев назад
I think you've misunderstood me, there are no signs when this happens, it's instant. If there was loading, I would have corrected it with the ecollar. Prong collars allow me to give an instant correction to both dogs when they load, if they go off on something without loading and I miss it, the prong collar instantly makes that action uncomfortable. @@MiracleK9Training

I am a very petite female, trying to walk my two Labradors - 55 lbs and 100 lbs who have some serious focus issues. I absolutely cannot walk them by myself. I am considering trying the prong, but Im afraid that I wont use it correctly. I just moved across country for a medical travel position, and currently don't have the $1500 for a dog trainer. The dogs are miserable because they cannot exhaust any energy, and so am I because I feel like a horrible dog parent. I see all by seaside neighbors walking their very well behaved dogs walking along the harborwalk. I would love to be able to take my dogs out like that. The added issue, after watching your video, is that there would be no "releasing the pressure" because my dogs are continuously pulling, similar to being on the back of a dog sled.
@MiracleK9Training
@MiracleK9Training 2 года назад
Even if you implement the prong “incorrectly” you won’t hurt your dogs. Trust me. These tools are safer than having the dog pull into flat collars constantly. I would recommend starting with this and seeing where you get. You’ll see once you start it how effective they can be. Start one at a time as you introduce the prong.

Why would you even want to use and e collar here. An aversive is an aversive in my opinion but the e collar does not offer any directional guidance. Why not just stick with the prong. It does the same thing but better?
@MiracleK9Training
@MiracleK9Training 2 года назад
Really good question. A few reasons. 1.) because of the physical nature of the tool, dogs tend to get used to prong collar sensation very very quickly as they inevitably will feel it a lot of times in scenarios we don’t intend. Once it looses its value it’s hard to get back. 2.) using an ecollar will be much easier for an OWNER to be more dynamic with level wise. Increasing or decreasing intensity on a prong is extremely challenging for a skilled trainer let alone an owner.
@Mwyse414
@Mwyse414 2 года назад
@@MiracleK9Training Interesting. I find the e collar to be much more prone to habituation. My dogs wear the e collar everytime they are off leash but it’s basically there for that one time they do something stupid and unpredictable. If I’m teaching something through -R or using punishment I always turn to the prong because it is much more reliable because of its physical aspect. Additionally I like that it is very easy for the dog to tell that the aversive is coming from me. As long as these tools are used correctly I believe an aversive is an aversive and every trainer will have their preferences

@@Cornsnake94 Head collars aka haltis are way more dangerous than a prong collar. Prong collars are designed to distribute as much even pressure as possible. The worst a good quality and well fitted prong collar can do is cause sores (even then, to get them you need to be a real brute about it). And a halti can break your dog’s neck if they pull on it hard enough. Something being banned doesn’t mean it’s bad, some countries ban people from holding hands in public.

Sometimes they can. But we see dogs all over the map that will do that behavior.

This is my one year old rottie right now, he’s good on a walk 80-90% of the time but good lord is he stubborn when he wants something, especially saying hi to my dad or wanting to pee on something. He does well w a gentle leader but the main reason I use it is bc he just kept trying to eat things and after some training he won’t eat stuff but I feel we need to go to the next step that I can’t get w food all the time

Get an ecollar. Set it fairly high. Only use it when he picks something up off the ground he shouldn’t. It’ll solve the issue in 1 session.

@@MiracleK9Training oh he isn’t picking stuff up off the ground anymore, last time he did he got a mouth full of biting ants and now is hesitant to pick anything up even if it’s a treat I drop on accident. His issue now tho is just being stubborn and if he wants to sniff he’ll stop and pull his head back then push his butt back to where he wants to go and if he *really* wants something he pulls like crazy and the gentle leader becomes useless at that point which I how I found your video, I think it’s time for a prong collar😓

Great video! I have a Pitbull that is just over 1 year old. I’ve done a lot of research and have been attempting to train with the prong collar, but my dog does not react to my corrections. I’ve tried reducing distractions in the environment by practicing in the backyard but I have the same problem there, he will usually want to always pull ahead and sniff things. I make sure he is properly exercised before training and have tried to use high value treats to encourage him but I’m at a standstill. In my entirely unprofessional opinion I believe the root problem is that he is too overwhelmed and distracted to react to the corrections but I was hoping you could give your opinion and possibly guidance on what to do.

Jane Doe glad you enjoyed it! The prong collar is not intended for proofing heeling around higher distractions. It’s just used to build some general muscle memory. The next thing you’re going to want to do is our video called introducing the ecollar into the walk pt1

I always see comments about people having no luck with a martingale and it baffles me. They do get sold as training collars but as far as I'm concerned thw only appropriate use for a martingale is for dogs who can slip out of a normal collar 🤷‍♂️ My lab pup has a martingale that I only got her to hang her ttag on, I just liked the collar. If I'm taking her out quickly to per or whatever sometimes I just attach the leash to that rather that put another collar on, but she pulls SOOOOO bad with it on. She pulls in a flat collar, usually I just a prong, but walking her with a martingale is HARDER than with a standard flat collar :/
