I must say, I’ve been working with leather for a long time and have many tools you “should” have needed. All in total we are talking several hundred dollars just for this project. You did a fantastic job with the tools you had where I can’t tell the difference. Well done.
Nice job mate. Few pointers, when setting your snaps, use the little anvil that CE with the kit - the concave side for the domed caps, and flip the anvil over to use the flat side for the flat based posts it will stop the flat bases from pushing down like the ones you set. When you are marking out bullet loops, use a vernier to measure the diameter of your cartridge plus twice the thickness of the leather you are using for the loops. this is your spacing on the back piece of leather. To work out the size of the loop, do what you did for the first one and then you can just measure it and mark out the whole lot in one go. This way you can just run one continuous line of stitching - more stitching, but quicker in the long run. On the first and last stitch of every loop, go through/around twice and don't pull very tight. This way you get the strength and wear resistance without stressing the leather at a stress point. Build yourself a stitching pony - it frees up your hands and well worth the hour or so it takes to make. You should check out Ian Atkinson and also Armitage leather channels on RU-vid for some helpful hints and tips. Good job - better thany first work by far. Keep it up. Cheers, Huge
Hi Hugh - thanks for the detailed comment and the great tips! As you can tell I'm new to leatherworking but really enjoy it. I'll be sure to try out your suggestions on my next project! Best wishes Michael
Good point Jasper, leather is not the best long term storage material for ammo. The brass will go green if left for too long. I may have done that before now ;) Merry Christmas to you also and I hope to see some video's you make in 2015! :)
I am talking from experience :-) I have a leather belt for my shotgun shells. Some of the shells can go green pretty fast wrapped in wet leather :-D I will see if I can borrow a cam and do some vids in 2015.
awesome ammo pouch too as for myself love the sam brown studs i have not found an ammo pouch to suit my needs most of the time i am busy tracking poachers down to hurnt
Thanks for this. It's a nice design and the work was presented well. What happened to the dogs at the end? Where did they go? Sorry, but they are the real stars of the show.
Thanks for the kind comment! We still have the dogs (3 now) 2 former foster dogs that we kept. The small white one is George and the black and white dog is Esme. George we think is around 12-14 and Esme is almost 3 now. Simon is the new addition but he's not in this video and he's around 4-6. :)
