Thanks for your video. Helpful as always! Do you have any recommendation on slicking a thinner leather (3-4oz or less)?

The thinner leathers have always been tough to slick. Try using a small piece of canvass or similar type fabric to burnish. Hold the fabric so it wraps around the edge with your thumb on the front side of the leather, your first finger on the edge and your second finger on the back of the leather. Use your thumb and second finger to stabilize the edge and your first finger to actually burnish. Use small , almost delicate, strokes towards you and you should get a good slick. Oddly enough, that type of fabric makes a great burnisher. I hope this helps!

Do I have to smooth the edge with sandpaper before slicked it with gumtrag? Btw, that simple table-edge trick is something. Thanks, Chuck, sir!

Hi Adrian, If the edges are beveled you should not have to slick them with sandpaper prior to applying the gum trag. Thanks!

Do you let the gum trag dry before slicking, or work the leather while it's still wet?

You mentioned plastic ones as a cheaper option for starting. What’s the difference in the results? I’m assuming it makes less friction, so you have to do it longer???

l have found the plastic doesn't do as well, l do not know why. And l used a drill press at 2400 rpm. Don't misunderstand me, it worked, but not as well. Wood seems the best and now they have a new product that's even better than both that l've seen on YT. Sorry I can't remember the guy who talked about it. Try this trick, take a teaspoon of white Elmer's glue or similar, mix it in a small glass container with water until it is the consistency of milk and put that on your edges and they'll buff out real slick. l found it worked well when l used to buy cheap hairy backed leather too. Weaver has a pasted back double shoulder that that is what they did to a whole double! lts fairly inexpensive ($125), but l haven't bought any bad leather from Weaver yet. I bought a #2 grade double shoulder in 8-9 oz for $94 that if I didn't know what l ordered I'd think it was a B or good C grade. A. about 7-9% of all leather sales is in this grade, think cordovan B 27-30%, this is your regular high end and high quality leather, think Hermann Oak. C this is what a good company calls economy, but that depends on the company or warehouse that's selling it, this is the majority leather sold #1 Crafters on a budget buy this or lower quality makers use it like garment makers. #2 I used this grade from another supply house, this and #1 too and I decided I needed to buy a splitter because of the inconsistency problem. Not Weaver though, they don't really sell any junk leather that l've seen so far. I mean even their bellies are good quality with a good split. Now I'm sure there's some poor Weaver stuff out there, but l still have my splitter and just sharpened it. LOL
