OLD Leather Smith here, very nice even beginners should be able 2 follow. I prefer the petal lifters myself I have used the dear foot before but with the petal lifters you can get a deeper lift and a more pronounced shape throughout. Just things I have done now and in the past. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

Amazing, I am just now learning the leather part of upholstery. Advanced Custom Upholstery was my shop before Augusta Maine shut me down. They decided that I have to register as an auto repair shop. I do boat tops and interiors plus vehicles and other recreational seats. I am extremely excited that I found your channel since I have to find a different direction to make money from home due to health issues. Can't wait to do this technique on all my leather projects I have been planning. Thanks for saving my business potentially by sharing this! Keep up the awesome work I'll definitely be watching and learning!

My word! You could call this “Extreme Leather Carving”! I carved and tooled for about 20 years - belts and such for a living, and more artistic pieces for family and friends. I have created some nice pieces with sharp effects, but this is cut to another level! Very impressive video. Thank you.

Okay, you are just plain cool my Southern friend! This Canadian gal needed to see this. Amazing work. Good explanations and tips and I'm so glad you said 1) the ridges dig into your fingers (my tiny fingers and wrists get nerve jumps), and 2) that human beings aren't very good at doing random. I always thought that was just my linear brain! Hugs to you. I will check out your channel again. :)

So glad it helped! I hate the ridges on those tools. I eventually sanded them off with sandpaper. And yes, we're terrible at "random" It's so bad that we have problems programming computers to be random. 😂 Thank you for the kind words and can't wait to hear what you think of the other videos.

Haven't been doing it for awhile. Just got back in, and realized my lifters were gone as soon as I saw your video. I keep sharp and dull. Dull ones for refining the stamps. @The Leatherverse have you considered sanding the ridges off your deer foot tool then wave a flame across it to smooth the rubber? It worked well for me. I also sanded a curved recess on the top, close to the end of the rubber grip. This provided better purchase for my index finger and better control.

This is beautiful. What would someone do with this? Frame it? I would imagine that you couldn’t do this on something like a belt because it would tear the leather somewhat. I’m just amazed at what can be done with leather so maybe I’m wrong? I’m just starting out and I love the look of carvings. This is my favorite so far.
@TheLeatherverse
@TheLeatherverse Год назад
Wow, thank you! You can do a lesser version of this on a belt. One of the big factors is being the size of the image. It's much harder to do it on a leaf half that size. When is done right, it shouldn't weaken the leather.

Can't wait to get started on this one. I still need to finish snoopy. Needed s narrower beveler. How thick is this leather piece? To be honest, when I first saw this the other week, I thought it would be a leaf glued down on a separate piece of leather.
@TheLeatherverse
@TheLeatherverse 2 года назад
Yeah, that steep edge beveler makes the more refined tooling possible. Pretty close to a must have. The leather thickness is in the 5-6oz range.

So why use the lifter at all when you go back with the deer foot? It seems like extra work. Is it the shading that the lifter causes?
@TheLeatherverse
@TheLeatherverse 2 года назад
The lifter is faster than the deer foot, but the deer foot has the option of "pushing" or "rolling" the edge, which gives you more depth. It's perfectly fine to just use one or the other, but I like using both because of the reasons above.
