I knew nothing about granulating paints before finding this channel and now I consider myself an expert so thanks commenters who are misunderstanding? Seriously though, I really have learned (and applied!) so much about granulation 😁

Your community loves you, Pete! I wanted to THANK YOU for sending a few new friendly faces to me. I am just so grateful I'm finding my tribe. At 46, it's a get bit harder. But you're a gem and we're very lucky to have you. I think I might have the same paper/journal as you. My Son gifted me one for Xmas last year. It has a buckle in the front, looks like an old book. I've been so precious about it but after seeing you use the paper, I may just give it a try!

I have this paper. Use it for watercolor and gouache. Love it! Described it as painting on a thick t-shirt. I’m considering getting one of their journals/sketchbooks.

That is a great description. It's so soft. It's like they put it through the laundry with a whole bottle of fabric softener. I am interested in getting a sketchbook too. 👍🏻

I love that you used this paper! For my birthday last year, my man bought this for me because I also love that antique look and creating maps. I found that you are right about the way the watercolor spreads for sure. In my case my ink pens did not fair well against the texture of this paper, but eventually I figured out that I am a bit heavy handed. Once I controlled my pressure better with the ink pens my line work turned out to be lovely! Thanks for sharing this! 🙂 Oh, last thing, I actually loved your mushroom. The loose watercolor was soft and pleasing in my opinion. Because the color spread so much it gave it a whimsical and free feeling.

Same here! When I got this I thought it'd be perfect for making little treasure maps! I was thinking it might work better if I used gouache on it? After seeing what Pete could do I might give it another try with watercolors...
@IllustrationsByPete
@IllustrationsByPete 5 месяцев назад
Yes, I think it's inspiring which is very important for me. It doesn't work the way I want but if I use it the way it works then I'm happy. The mushroom wasn't so bad. I wish I had the part coming off of it go right off the page instead of adding that little creature but I was happy with it in the end. 🙂
@IllustrationsByPete
@IllustrationsByPete 5 месяцев назад
I was thinking gouache right after the first one but decided to push it a little more with watercolor. Gouache looks good on a paper bag, so I'm sure it would work here. 👍🏻
@Prisbot
@Prisbot 5 месяцев назад
@@IllustrationsByPete Yes, @windywednesday4166 is spot on about Gouache. I have used that on this paper as well. I will note that it is quite a bit thicker though so unless you water it down quite a bit it will appear to be raised off the paper. Also, the texture of the paper does not shine through as much as it does with watercolor. I bet you could cover your creature with gouache to change it if you really want to change it.

I found their leather journals last year and bought one...I loved it sooooo much I went back and bought a 2nd one in a larger size. Each page is unique and quirky and adds soo much character to my sketches. I was also surprised the ink doesn't bleed out or through at all. I have used ink, inktense, watercolor, gouache, graphitint pencils and colored pencils in my journal with excellent results. The biggest tip I have for this paper is limit your erasing. If you like to sketch in pencil then erase your lines use a kneedable eraser and tap or roll, don't rub as it peels the paper instantly. The journals I bought are my absolute favorites and my go to's over all the others I have because each piece is more unique than it would be in a more standard skethbook because of the uniqueness of the paper, the hand torn deckled edges and lovely staining of the pages. Love love love! Glad you enoyed the quirky paper. Check out their journals...they are gorgeous! ❤
@IllustrationsByPete

Thank you for sharing. One of these is definitely on my list. I don't pencil sketch so that won't be a problem for me. I do use water soluble pencils like inktense and graphitint so I need to try them. I think this is a great value for so much paper but I also see why you need to have a whimsical side to appreciate it. I absolutely love the personality of it but most people like a predictable paper. I'm glad you enjoy it. 🙂

I bought a couple different types of these papers from this company. I really enjoyed the very heavy poundage (400lb maybe?) but they don’t always have it. I also have the 90lb. It is ok, but I totally agree with you. It is lovely paper if you use the right paint and tools for it.

Love the look of the paper, I’d love to try it. I enjoy trying different papers. I love the painting, I’m a mushroom girl. LOL. Love the second painting also. A lot of the time I will do a light sketch with 0.7 pencil. I wish I could do it like, just start and BAM there it is. You are awesome with ALL your videos. I learn something always. I also visited Laura’s site and watched her create with the masking fluid. It was very cool. Pete, we love ya and we especially love your rants….for sure!!!

You bring me so much joy and laughter with every video. I am so grateful to you for that. I have serious health issues and every bit of laughter is the most wonderful medicine. I work more in artist grade pencil than I do anything although I am spending a ton of time in acrylic and watercolor lately. My favorite surface in the world to work with using pencil is fabriano artistico hot press 300 GSM. I get such a consistent application and I can apply tons of layers. I very unknowledgeable experimented on a piece of it with watercolor last year now thanks in part to a lot of what you have posted in your videos I'm going to go back and try a piece with watercolor and a lot more knowledge. Thank you for every video every ounce of laughter and joy and every bit of knowledge. I will check out this paper since one of your viewers posted that they also make books with this paper. I am almost done with my current sketchbook and I'm in need of a new one plus I really want one with watercolor paper.

Thank you! I appreciate you and all of your support. I am glad that I can help you smile. This paper is very unique and doesn't act like most watercolor papers. If that's ok for you then go for it, but if you want something more predictable then I would go with an Arches, Hahnemuhle, or Etchr. The spiral bound Arches might be the best and least expensive choice. Get one of the others if you prefer traditionally bound books. I hope that helps. 🙂

It's definitely a unique paper. I also found it very uneven and unpredictable, so some paint would move and other spots wouldn't. I'd stick with something a little more consistent if you need sharp precision. 👍🏻

This reminds me of comments I read (on other channels) where people ask at the 5-minute-mark about things that are explained later in the 45-minute-video. Or they ask at the end about things that where definitely mentioned. How do they function in real life? 🤣 Thanks for the rant 🥰

@@IllustrationsByPete Well, there are a lot of type of nibs that are for dip pens. With a light hand, I think you might be able to make it work... maybe I'll put it down as a challenge for the future for me :).

Give it a shot. I recently started smoothing down my nibs with very fine sandpaper because I hate that scratchy feels of many dip nibs, but I'm not sure if they are that smooth. I'll have to try it as well. If any paper deserves the effort, it's this stuff.

My passion for granulation has disappeared and been replaced by the search for separation. Don't really know what I would paint with them but I must have more. Help!
