This is my first leathercraft for beginners video. It's a list of tools I think are important if you're just starting out with Leathercraft. So if you've ever been confused and wondered Which tools do I buy first? Here ya go! Be sure to check my Amazon links for tools.
This is not a definitive beginners tool kit, but more of the first tools you should buy if you're on a budget and aren't sure what to get. Some folks will most assuredly be up in arms about some missing tools, but they're right behind these ones in the next video in this series.
If you think I'm missing something, post about it, I'll edit the list in the description over time if I've missed something.

Remember that I link most of the tools I use in my videos in my description. Picking any of them up through those links helps the channel out. Thanks!

Nice educational video. It is nice to see someone chat about their tools than have 80 million tools they use for finer leather working vs beginner level leather working. Glad I could give you a video idea and keep it cheap.

Great tips, as always. Instead of a marble slab (I have shattered one before *doh*), I use 3 vinyl floor tiles that I glued together, and a 5mm metal plate. The glued tiles are excellent at shock absorption, and if you add the metal plate underneath, you have a versatile work surface. I work at Parker Street too, so when there was work done on the rail line out back, I asked the foremen if I could snag a small section of old rail. Makes a great anvil. Keep the tips coming. Great stuff.

Great kit! The only things I would personally add would be an edge slicker/burnisher and stitching chisel(s) just to make life easier.

Additional recommendations: Packing tape. (use good quality) to back pattern tracing and prevents paper tearing, wood slicker for edging, goto to a countertop company and ask about getting a cutoff of granite. (Far cheaper than leather store suppliers.) Pen can be used as a stylus if packing tape is on back of the pattern. Grid pattern paper can also be used for patterns. Try to find a local leather products store to buy scraps for practicing on.

My answer to this question has always been, "It depends on what you want to make." You can make a simple pouch or a pair of moccasins using only a knife, but a western tooled belt will require more tools. You have a good setup for a beginner there that will allow them to complete a wide variety of projects. I personally would add a pair of scissors for cutting out paper patterns, but you can certainly do that with the knife. I would also add a sanding block and sandpaper to the list in order to sand edges smooth before beveling and burnishing. You could use the handle of the beveller to burnish, or a scrap of canvas or denim. Good call on the drive punches versus a rotary punch. Cheap rotary punches will slip, possibly ruining your work, and I've had the handles flex and bend, ruining the punch. Possibly more importantly, the drive punches aren't limited to punching holes near an edge, and can punch holes anywhere in the piece.

+Randal Stone Totally agree on a lot of these points. I don't even have burnishing in this set because I didn't burnisher anything for ages (rightly or wrongly) as a beginner. This is less a beginner leather working set and more of a "first phase" of tools so people don't get overwhelmed. All good points there, thanks for the feedback it means a lot.

Thanks for the video man. Ive got some of these already. Where would you suggest buying leather from online for a beginner?
@DarkHorseWorkshop

+Will Martian I'd hunt down a local shop, maybe there's a tandy, or depending on what you're making destroy an old couch or jacket. I haven't ordered leather online myself. Amazon seems to have everything lately though.

Question... why is the stone slab necessary? Why not just use the poly board or a clicker press board? I ask because I'm getting my tools together and am looking to save money where I can...
@Thatbakedjedi
@Thatbakedjedi 3 года назад
Just go to a tile place and ask for a scrap piece, it should be free.

@@Thatbakedjedi it wasn't too long after posting this I broke down and picked one up from Tandy. Solid advice though!
