Leatherman FREE P4 Review

Never at rest, Leatherman pushes the multitool envelope with the Free series. The anchor is this one, the Free P4 will its full featured tool set. Here you'll see the P4 in action, get POU discussion, revisit some classics [which are still awesome], and consider its capabilities. Value is stressed and we're reminded what that means. Some of the P4's tools are familiar, some are new. The magnetic one-handed architecture is innovative. Packaging, sheath, quality, durability, and versatility are top notch. Collecting it might be the only reason you need and you might want to add this one to the list.

Sad they have gone away from the diamond file like on the Wave. My wife and I fish and the diamond file is use every single trip for sharpening hooks.
@gearsNtools
@gearsNtools 4 года назад
I agree, I used the diamond file on my wave a surprising amount. I like the overall feel feel of the Free P4 outside tools and pliers, but the inside tools feel like it was designed by a committee of marketing folks who are feature cramming... why do we need 3 styles of flat head screwdrivers, a ruler that's 1.5" long ect...

I agree that diamond file is a great addition and they should put it on all of their multitools, even the Squirt. For now, buy a Lansky Blade Medic, like $11 on Amazon. I got one a few months back, so far so good. :)

Being in the oilfield, we cant have knives on location, but we can have multi tools. Sounds dumb since they have a knife on them, but never the less, may have to get one of these. Rock on nutinfancy!
@TruckerJDub
@TruckerJDub 5 лет назад
Maybe a dumb question but why can't you have a knife in the oilfields?
@lj5673
@lj5673 5 лет назад
Because rather than hire people with common sense, they have decided that takeing away knives will mitigate injury. Kinda like the gun argument. Its dumb but some people out here aren't too bright. That's what you get when you pay guys with no skill a lot of money. You tend to attract idiots.
@TruckerJDub
@TruckerJDub 5 лет назад
@@lj5673 that sucks. I had a job once that had a clause in the employee handbook that we weren't allowed to have a knife that could be used as a weapon. When I asked for clarification on what that meant I got basically the same response the anti gun crowd says about the AR15. If it's looks could scare someone or if it was sharp enough to stab someone. I just didn't wear a knife clipped on or exposed while at work after that. Any knife could fit that description.
@TheDouglasTrevino
@TheDouglasTrevino 5 лет назад
I'm an IT engineer and many corporate clients won't allow us to come in with a knife, because that's a "weapon", but will allow us to have a multitool if it is part of a "tool kit." So we carry our Leathermen next to other tools and it's cool. You can't make this level of stupid up.
@TruckerJDub
@TruckerJDub 5 лет назад
@@TheDouglasTrevino that thinking is why when I bought my bugout I went for the basic blue one. Everyone knows that a blue knife isn't dangerous. I don't pull out the Ultratech that I always have on me. Most people would have a heart attack if they saw that. It pains me to try and wrap my head around the logic some people use.

Marine mechanic / electrician , during the course of my day I use a leatherman tool 30-50 times a day , I am on my 5th Wave the one and only drawback and attribute is the stainless steel . Without it the tool would rust solid in my saltwater environment but if you lose it in the water , you cant retrieve it with a magnet because stainless steel is non magnetic . The P4 changes that with it's internal magnet's " yes I have a lanyard " but they get dropped and bounce. I have returned 3 leatherman's for repair and every time the service was excellent . The 420 steel is ideal , it's a utility blade , not a specialized cutting tool to me . I am constantly scraping battery connections and corrosion cutting sealants really hard use that trash's the blade edge , just a few pass's on a sharpener in my tool bag and I can slice through wire sheathing for hours . I love the new sheath , the velcro sheaths were junk . I actually had two custom leather sheaths made at a gun show that have snaps for $ 150.00 a brown one for work , and a black one for Church L.O.L. . Any tradesman who carries and works with a leatherman for a week , will be wearing one for life . Ordering the P4 after signing off here.

I’ve bought & had the wave for years before finding the Surge. I wouldn’t use anything else, the surge is the more robust multi tool (heavier pliers & scissors) that I’m completely satisfied with the years of service I’ve got from it.

The Juice! Love my C2’s, have four of them, always carrying one I think the Wave will remain a bestseller for years to come, it has an awesome tool set, a functional tool set, that is where the Free falls short, if I’m looking for an all in one carry, the tools need to be tough and functional and full size in relation to the handles, the Free is poorly designed, well made, but poorly designed

Have nearly all the leathermans made in last two decades. I wouldn’t EDC anything larger than a Skeletool. Personally the Squirt Ps4 & a Juice KF4 fill all my pocket needs & the Charge lives on my Man Purse. I have the Free P4 & I feel very disappointed in the short file without a diamond side or notching edge as you pointed out, no 154cm or S30 blade at this price range means to me the Charge TTi wins big. Also I have already slightly rounded the Philips screwdriver & there’s no way to fix it without sending it in for warranty but If it were the Charge It would just require a quick new exchangable bit to be good as new again.. I feel the Charge or Wave is a better way to go ymmv

I stick with my Surge. The reason ? The bit kitt. It helped me time after time on the gun range. The p4 is not compatible with the kitt. If it was I would not hesitate to buy the P4. The concept is great but lacking.

My EDC has progressed over the years from primarily pocket carry to now a hybrid system. I have an edc knife in my pocket always, in addition I have a edc backpack that has expanded my capabilities 10 fold. I use the 5.11 24hr pack. It has countless pockets inside and outside, it’s built for heavy duty use and it carries better than anything I have ever used. My pack has a Leatherman wave, a victornox cadet, a level 2 first aid kit, daily use items like toiletries, technology items like backup batteries for the iPad and iPhone, on the go snacks, and countless other items I’d be here all night describing everything I carry edc in my pack. I highly recommend this method, no one wants a fanny pack, sorry nutnfancy...the 5.11 pack carries way more stuff, looks bad ass, and you’ll enjoy it more and be better prepared. Yes my pack also carries a G27, bottled water, a taser, and 3 flashlights and several fire starting capabilities. It’s almost a edc bugout kit but not quite

If I needed to get those torx out to change the cutters, I'd have to use my leatherman wave because it has a bit driver and bit set. No bit driver is a deal breaker for me. With the bit extension you can use ANY quarter inch bits on my wave. Also, I agree with others, for the price give me better blade steel. I like it. But it's for the spenders out there as of now. My charge saved my back one cold winter wind storm in Iowa this year. The lane at the farm was blown over with snow and i couldn't get out down the lane. I realized that there was a padlock on the side lane to go into the field and dug my way to the side gate and filed the padlock with my Charge and with a little elbow grease it did the job. A file has to have a side file on the edge of the file in my opinion. It's a must have.

The magnetic balisong type opening of the Free series is awesome, and the plier head of the Free series is the best that Leatherman has ever made. But the tools selection that Leatherman decided to make/include in the Free P2&P4 are not only lackluster but bizarre and not nearly as useful as I had hoped. It's just the case of Leatherman trying to take two already existing/perfected tools and combine them, this is the main theme of the Leatherman Free series(P2&P4)!!! In the Free series, Leatherman does this a lot and it pisses me off!!! First, let's talk about the Awl. The awl in the free P2&P4 has a micro flat head screwdriver at the tip of it which completely eliminates the awls pointiness and sharpness making the awl essentially useless!!! Then there's the really crappy pry/package opener tool and useless mini ruler/medium flathead screwdriver tool!!! The package opener in the Leatherman Free series is not that good at all!! On the other hand, the package opener on the Wingman comes to a narrow fine curved sharpened edge which allows you to easily pierce the thick plastic edge of clamshell packaging and slice it open. The Package opener on the Free P2&P4 looks like they tried to just sharpen the corner edge of a flathead screwdriver, it's not as sharp as it should be and it's common for this package opener to easily slide/skip off of clamshell packaging while you're trying to slice it open!!! What annoys me is that Leatherman already had perfected the package opener which was on the Wingman, so then why not just add that same awesome package opener to the Free P2&P4 instead of trying to reinvent it? Then there's the most useless tool that Leatherman has ever made to date, the mini ruler/medium flathead screwdriver!!! It really really sucks because it's a mini ruler, which in itself is just completely useless and a waste of valuable space inside a multitool!!! The medium flathead screwdriver at the end of the ruler is also really bad. It's really bad because the medium flathead screwdriver is tapered and comes to a very thin flat edge. That taper causes the medium screwdriver end to have a lot of movement/play in the straight slot of the screw head and this medium screwdriver always seems to just slip out of the screw head. It's just the case of Leatherman trying to cram way too many functions into one multitool by taking two already existing/perfected tools and combining them into one "jack of all trades master of none" kind of tool!!! The result of doing that ends up just turning the Free series with its awesome balisong opening action and great pliers head into a multitool that I don't really like and would rather not carry at all!!! The Leatherman Free series had such great potential, but the tools that Leatherman decided to put in them is just weird/bizarre and make no sense at all!!! I just don't understand it!!!
@mguy808
@mguy808 5 лет назад
Thomas Connolly Well said. I’m pretty bummed with this tool. A bunch of fancy magnets at the expense of quality tools.
@ThomasConnolly
@ThomasConnolly 5 лет назад
@@mguy808 Also, Leatherman decided to not put an exchangeable bit holder in the Free P2&P4. It's a decision that I actually like because I've never been a fan of the Leatherman exchangeable bit holder because the bits always seem to come coated in that shitty black paint, which instantly scratches off as soon as you put the bit in the bit holder and then take the bit out!!! The exchangeable bits are also too short unless you also carry the additional bit extender which ends up taking extra space and adds unnecessary weight. So since Leatherman decided with the new Free series not to add an exchangeable bit holder, they should have added in the Free series(P2&P4) a really good dedicated long medium sized phillips screwdriver and a really good dedicated long medium sided flathead screwdriver. But in reality, the Free P2&P4 has just an ok phillips screwdriver that is a bit too short and a really really crappy flat head screwdriver that's essentially the tapered end of a useless mini ruler!!! I don't understand how Leatherman the creator and king of the multitool somehow fucked up the implementation of the screwdrivers in the new Free series!!! What really baffles me is how I noticed in three minutes of opening my Leatherman P4 all the issues that I"ve mention above and in previous comments but Leatherman somewhere completely missed all of these issues in their CAD(Computer Assisted Design) stage, early prototyping stages and final production sample stages!!! Either the people working/designing at Leatherman are complete idiots or they are always constantly high on drugs, that's the only to ways/reasons that I can think of to explain the bizarre/weird shitty tool selection in the Leatherman Free series(P2&P4)!!!

Same here, but I think we are in the minority. I DO think its overpriced, but it's a good tool (and I currently EDC mine)

I work in a CNC shop and carry a Free P4 daily. I use the pliers to take apart measuring equipment for cleaning, I use the blade to cut strips of film and foam, I use the file to remove burrs from unfinished work, flat blade for prying stuck parts, the screwdriver and scissors get lots of use.. Seemingly infinite applications for this MT in the shop. Carry it on the belt, don't leave home without it

Have you had problems with swarf sticking to the magnets?
@showboat1556

@@pietzeekoe I've had that problem with magnetic flashlights, but not with the free. I use the sheath and carry it on my belt, which is covered by my shirt. Keeps it protected from flying chips

Tale of knives makes a great holster for the free p2 or p4 and an s2 baton and a fisher space pen. I have had this setup for 6 months now and no complaints.

17:40 Heck, even after months of using a velcro sheath it wears out with all the loops being overdrawn, coming undone, and just bunching up to make it unusable. I just get an aftermarket leather sheaths if a tool I get comes with a velcro one at this point.

Speaking on weight. In all reality it’s about the size and weight of another Glock 19 magazine. Planning to replace my edc knife so I’ve decided I’m good with it. I already carry a dedicated self defense knife which I’ll still carry

This is going to be a weird question but what are the edges of the tool like? I had an old Leatherman Wave and was extremely disappointed in the finishing of the tool because the edges of the tool were so sharp I literally cut myself on it more than once. A $100 tool and Leatherman couldn't smooth off the corners/edges of the damn thing. I ended up returning it and getting a Charge.

*Vacation:* Charge TTI + [great selection of tools, covers pretty much every need, great steel, for all it packs it's quite light on weight] *EDC:* Juice CS4 & Surge's File attachment [compact, light weight, got all the tools I use often, includes a cork screw I never use, the file attachment is great for resharpening the multitool and the primary knife] *Others:* Wave [at home use for random things & it's carried when I got meetings & events where knives aren't allowed but I can slip by with a multitool. the "all-rounder"]

I got a Free P2 to replace my lost Wave. The P4 looks good but the separate knife blades and the saw would be bad weight for my usage. I've always got some particle metallurgy steel in my knife pocket so 420HC on a backup knife is no issue for me. Here's hoping it lives up to my great experience with the Wave RIP

I finally gave in and replaced the Wingman that I'd carried for 10 years with one of these and I've been nothing but happy with it other than the file for the same reasons, but i also carry a Victorinox so that's fine, and I'm surprised i actually liked it as much as i have. I find myself flipping it around out of boredom like a butterfly knife. Definitely worth the money

This one is seriously tempting, mainly because the shears seem more capable. There’s the plus. To me, the negatives are limited to the fugly sides! Wait for Ti sides? Nothing wrong with 420HC in martensite structure. They needed ferromagnetic properties for the magnetic action, so good on Leatherman! I’ve been trying to get excited about a MDMT for years, just never got there. Using a Wingman at work for potable water service and scraping garbage asphalt out of $7000 tire grooves in third world countries made that one kinda tempting.

Great review, may have to check one out. I have several waves, a surge, a wingman, a skeletool, and a micra. Use the Waves as a daily driver for work, one in the truck, workbench... Others are spread throughout the house, trailer etc for the ease of use if the wave isn't on my side...

Apparently it did not originally include the pocket clip, so conceivably if you order online you could receive old stock without the clip. The difference between the Free P4 and Free P2 is that the latter lacks a saw and has a single blade that is partially serated (rather than the two distint blades of the P4).

I like my leatherman sidekick because of the spring loaded pliers. Once it is open it is easy one handed operation.

Which leather man do I use most? If you gear check me, you’ll find a juice S2 unless we’re at the race track with one of our race cars or the shop actually.There, You’ll find a Super tool 300 in a leather sheath I know how you are with that but for me, a nylon sheath wears out in about a month or 2. I also have a wingman. It lives in my shotgun loadout. I never take it out unless I am wearing that gear. Which is basically almost never because I don’t have a soldier boy desert around here. But for $40 or whatever it can be dead to me. I know exactly where it is. Great POU FOR IT.

A free p4 has been on my list. Thanks for the review. Love my wave; however I carry a my surge faithfully. It's a little heavy in pocket so I use the sheet and I have the two sleeves of tool bits that fits in the sheets as well.
