I work in my hometown as a Paid-On-Call Firefighter in an area with 4 different highways passing through it (2 State highways, and 2 Federal highways). As a result, we respond to a lot of vehicle crashes. I saw this tool on Leatherman's website and the selling points for me were the Heavy Duty pliers and the seatbelt cutter. All the rest is just convenient extras. There's often times where a vehicle is damaged beyond drivability but is still able to be repaired relatively easily but we still need to disconnect the battery. In such cases rather than using our cable cutters and cutting huge chunks out of the positive and negative terminal wires, we typically will disconnect the two terminals. I wound up getting one for Christmas and look forward to being able to put it to use in the field and saving myself the trips back and forth to the truck to retrieve and put back the tools necessary to disconnect the batteries of different vehicles.

Just grabbed one for my get home bag. Something alot of people dont consider with a multi tool is this. There's a right tool for every job and the tools on a multitool are nearly never the best at anything really. They are designed to meet certain needs as best they can. I need this for a in the pinch screw driver, a 3rd knife in my bag as well as a backup saw blade which I know it's not fantastic but like I said before..... it's to get a job done but I dont expect it to work as well as my folding saw. I got a bottle opener and can opener for in a pinch and a extra serrated blade for cutting lines. I dont see a point for ME to spend in excess of $100 for any multitool when they all compromise something. I think this one is particularly one of the best all around multi tools under $80 and the one hand opening was what sold me over the center drive which also just felt cheap to me. But any way.... nice video work man I'm gonna check out more of your stuff.

Agree 100% I think people get fixated on their favorite tool and forget that different situations require different tools. that's why I've reviewed over multi tools on my channel! Thanks for watching and Your going to like the OHT!
@nicklim9299
@nicklim9299 2 года назад
Actually the OHT did not steal ideas from the centerdrive as u claimed..instead is the other way around ..Gerber took some ideas from Leatherman . The OHT was introduced in 2012. The Centerdrive was 2017. Please get the facts right before claiming it was "stolen ideas" . All the while was Leatherman being the pioneer and Gerber is just playing catching up and still not meeting the higher levels Leatherman has.

I mis-spoke. I believe the original tool with the retractable plier design was the Gerber MP600 released in 1991

I wish it had the file at least instead of the serrated blade. Thanks for the video

Actually the Center-Drive does have a serrated blade inside the tool. Personally I wish Leatherman would drop the gimmicky Free series and come out with a new OHT that has a full size saw on the exterior, scissors inside, long driver like the Center-Drive, and maybe find a way to mount a ferro rod somewhere in the frame. That would be the baddest multitool ever made. That being said, I’m strongly considering the OHT as an EDC

I think your correct, I misspoke in this video. I do think an updated OHT is due! It’s been out since 2004, I like the idea of a saw and farro rod on this tool!

I agree except for the scissors. I never understood why tiny scissors would ever be useful except for sewing. Besides that, that would be an amazing tool.

there is a saw on the OHT. It's all accessible from the outside, unlike the center-drive. i've used the wave, center-drive, and the OHT and personally find the OHT to be the fastest for tool deployment. all the tools have their own compartment, so you don't have to fold out five tools, pick the one you want, then fold the rest back. super quick. and the spring-loaded pliers are a lifesaver for extended use. it's in the details, but i find the OHT to be the best in my type of work, though it varies from person to person.

this is the only one with the wide jaws like this from weatherman. you might checkout the Gerber center drive too if you like the jaws/ onehandness of this one.

I just got mine yesterday and it had about 1mm of play in the pivot and scratches in the handle finish. Not sure if I got a lemon or not. Kind of disappointed in it to be honest. I payed like 102 with shipping and it feels like a 10 dollar amazon multitool. If you take one handle and squeeze it from the sides it flexes a lot. Working on getting it returned/refunded and I'm gonna get the crunch instead.

Hi, you said that OHT have icons to show what tool where, and other dont have it. Its kind of truth, but I have to mentioned, that leatherman just go different way in previous tools. There are (basically) two tools in Charge with one hand opening - knifes. And you dont need icons - plant blade have smooth spine and serrated have 3 notches (which you could feel even though gloves), so you dont need to look to the tool to figure out what is where. PS: Other Charges's external tools and pliers could be deployed, used and closed by one hand quite easily. Reaching internal tool by one hand it tricky, but possible as well (of cause it would be not so fast and comfortable as by using two hands). So if you are not a person whose life depend on seconds (sapper?), than OHT dont worth to buy it.

I'm new to multi tools and edc stuff so pardon my naive knowledge. I have three multi tools. I started with a Leatherman Sidekick which was given to me and I loved the overall durability and tools. But I didn't like how you had to open it to get to most of the tools. I then purchased a Gerber Truss. I liked how the tools were accessible from the outside and loves the scissors but opening it was a bit of a hassle and it was just a bit unnecessary for me. Lastly I graduated to the Gerber Center Drive. I love it! It's not overloaded with tools I don't need. What it does have I use regularly. I love the spring loaded pliers and the one handed use of it all. The screwdriver is amazing. My only complaint (which is dumb) is that it doesn't have scissors, but again, that's a useless complaint. I am definitely happy with it. I'm in HVAC and duct cleaning so this comes in handy every job. Do you or anyone reading my too long of a comment have any other similar style multi tool recommendations with a butterfly OR pocket knife design? Again, pardon my lack of knowledge or wording.

If the screwdriver is high priority center drive is hard to beat. If you use scissors a lot you might check out the Leatherman Surge. It’s on the bigger side but you can put a pocket clip on it. One of the outside thumb deploy tools at scissors ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hsIX4yTs7CI.html

What do the small slots in the scales near the pivot do? Are they parts of the manufacturing process?
@gearsNtools
@gearsNtools 3 года назад
Good Eye! This looks to be part of the manufacturing process, the metal inside of the handles have a slightly rolled edge to keep them from catching on things, but up against the plier head the metal needs to sit flat. to ensure the pliers can open and close freely, My guess is they put the slit in there to help ensure the area around the pivot stayed flat when they formed the roll into the lower part of the handle. it is only on the edge, I looked inside and there are no grooves or other features to the slit.

@@gearsNtools This is a neat tool, with the real 'wow' factor being the slide mechanism, and beautifully weighted spring on the pliers. If you happen to know someone who has lost function in their hand (and there are a few out there with our Vets around), they are a great device.
@bauhausoffice
@bauhausoffice 3 года назад
In the opening he shows it being dropped and the pliers being deployed because of the drop. He doesn’t mention the fact there’s a lock on it so that will not happen.

I did mis speak, I was trying to give Gerber credit for the MP600 that came out in the late 90's I'd forgotten they had a different name for it back then :). But the patent ran out so all is fair game at this point. thanks for watching!
