I have a theory about why they changed the design of both the medium flathead and the Philips head drivers: in the original design, the middle tools in each handle (medium flat on one side, Phillips on the other) provided an opening for the pliers when the tool was closed - but the design also allowed those specific drivers to deploy almost along the centerline of the tool, which is close to ideal for turning screws. HOWEVER, since those tools didn’t lock, it was possible for the drivers to collapse under pressure. The later design deployed the drivers far to one side of the handles, so applying force to the handle tended to leverage the driver toward the open position, decreasing the likelihood of the driver collapsing. That’s my theory and I’m sticking with it.
Hey my PST 2 from 1999-2000 has the old PST 1 style needle nose pliers but it's a PST 2 in every other way. Weird, hu? I believe the manufacturing date is on the inside of each handle. Good review!
Nice video 👍 I think I have a PST II in a PST body somehow. Even the sheath is a mix. I only sent it on one for repair, but I am pretty sure they send me my tool back.
I got a pst in a brown sheat,,,,, can’t see date inside handles,,,,, been carrying and using this thing for soooo many years,,,,,, Tool is in great shape;;;; wondering if it’ steal worth something ?
The date will be there but the numbers are something *really* difficult to see. They're not worth a huge amount, in the region of 40-80 euros here in Europe depending on condition. If you can afford it, keep it; they're lovely things.
guessing mine is a bastard child then...has bits of both of these...originally issued to the British army as part of a radio system upgrade with the small flat head being the perfect tool to adjust some of the settings
Hello there I've got a few of those in the very same cases as you but I never used them they all have been in a box somewhere for years now see what I need is a multi tool that I can carry with out good reason for edc because if I get stopped anywhere and I've got a 🔓knife ie or multi tool because of my job I'm in big trouble and it's very upsetting because of the knife laws they call it knife crime🤔 it's not the knife 🤔 it's the person who has the knife🤔 So UK laws please don't blame everyone who has a poickit knife ie multi tool it's the person who has it so please don't call it knife crime to anyone who sees this just think about it my grandad give me a box of those old multi tools which he had for years and I can't even edc one of them on a day out with my kids how sad is that because I've already had one of them taking away from me by a police officer all ready😔 and it's very upsetting because they were all given to me to carry not just to look at I don't know what the world is coming to for someone to take the tool and case off my belt and for them to keep it after my grandad give it to me and he even had it on he's belt for about30years I've still got a box of those multi tools that was given to me and I'm afraid to carry it the red victorinox Swiss Army knives are fine sometimes I've even known for someone else having one of them taking away from him😏 anyway thanks again pal for sharing this with us👍
You can mod these you know and remove the blade then it's just tools. I'm a member of the Leatherman group on FB - they talk about mods all the time and can offer advice if you're interested (I know nothing about modding!!!)
The original PST has the words POCKET SURVIVAL TOOL actually printed on one of the arms, although it is often unofficially referred to as the PERSONAL SURVIVAL TOOL.
I would consider Tim Leatherman to be an expert. When Tim calls it Pocket Survival Tool, I’d say that’s official. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ali4QEccaFQ.html
