I'm from Jackson, MS. His 1987 season in Jackson for the AA Mets was absurd. He won the Texas League triple crown. I was 8. He was a 5-tool guy. He was a Mark Grace light at the plate, only with the glove to play almost anywhere - and that's a complement. But the NY media devoured him because, as you say, he was supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle. And as those great Davey Johnson Mets teams started to tank around the same tame he arrived, he was an easy, if completely innocent, scapegoat.
The hype they put on this kid was way too much. There will never be another Mantle. If Mike Trout or Acuna JR were hyped up to be the next Mickey Mantle's, they would be considered duds right now
