You’d be amazed how fast it happens too. When I first got mine few years back, I walked out in the sun for about 4 seconds on my porch. I wasn’t paying attention and was holding it face down where the lens got direct sunlight. Then I went to put on my headset and there were now sun spots on the screen. Luckily it was the first week and oculus just replaced it for free, but it caused me to start keeping mine in a case with a piece of fabric covering the lens when I’m not using it 😅
Fun fact: The lenses on the oculus are conclave, what that means is it bends inwards, focusing the light rays towards the LED's, which can damage them. If you're confused on what is a light ray, it's just the sunlight.
With oled displays, you can. Lcd displays will get damaged if you leave them in direct light, dark patches will appear in them if they are left in direct sunlight.
@@TheRobinSystem the screen could be sensitive to UV in general, I don’t see why the lenses have anything to do with an improperly shielded display. My whole point is that they blamed it on the lenses focusing the light entering into the screen. I would say that this screen would be damaged by UV regardless of the presence or direction of the lenses. Also in the demonstration they showed the light entering from the side of screen which is not possible under normal circumstances
Is bc on the brightness it will damage the oculus and to your eye and it will take year for your eye not get blind bc if it still hurts then wear a glasses
Yep, that happened to mine. Mine has some bad burn marks. Just got a quest 3 recently. Learned from that mistake. Couple safety measures now to make sure I don't do it again lol.
The issue is that it focuses it in one direction but wouldn’t it’s lead it out in the other direction love you’re stuff tho and would love a follow up explaining this
From a vr player with burned lenses, the clip of the vr with lens burn is extreme lens burn. If you do burn your lenses, you will just et a few dots on your screen
It's actually worse than you think. The lens is designed to take light from a surface and focus it to a small point in front of your eye while maintaining the fov. So what will happen is any light going into this focal point will be evenly dispersed on the LCD side. Basically, ensuring you cook your entire LCD relatively evenly

I actually had it happen to me when I left my VR facing towards the window and it burnt a line through the screen from the sun moving across the window.
Yeah, so it kind of happened to me, and now that whenever I'm a moochiest quest too. There's always like this little orange spot right on the top right corner
I did this accidentally after I just moved into my new apartment. I had the blinds closed, but the sun still poked through them and I had my quest 2 on the floor in a pile with everything else.(because I had no furniture yet) lenses facing the window. When I came home to play it that night, I noticed a new white dot dead center at the top of my screen. It's not a deal breaker thankfully. It could have been worse. But it is a little immersion breaking when I'm in a dark area and happen to look up. Just bought a quest 3, so I plan to hopefully never repeat that mistake.
I brought my Index and pc in my backyard of my old place once on a sunny day. I didnt know about this back then. Thankfully valve actually replaced it for me even though it was my fault. Very little damage but it was a little burn spot.
Prince u should go make a short on hardlocking . hard locking is when your Oculus or meta quest freezes and you can't turn it off so what you do is A:leave it until it dies. B:wait until it turns off. C:if it doesn't do both of those ur gonna have to send it back to oculus
Lenses are somewhat reciprocal, so you have to imagine the sun light as a bunch of parallel rays that get focused on the screen, although on normal usage, it's the parallel rays from the screen that get focused on your eyes.
I found this out the hard way but oculus did fix it for free even though it was user error and they would have been justified in refusing the warranty claim

you can actually use it outside, you just have to cover the lenses when you dont have your quest on. your tracking and passthrough cameras are not like the lenses, they dont focus light through them. so you can use your quest outside. just dont let the sun shine INTO your lenses Edit: ive also played outside before so yeah

I have a quest 2. It has the yellow things from the sun. It’s been like that for years so I’m used to it now but I remember when I first got it I don’t know how it happened and what it was and it looked like Arabic so I asked my Muslim mom if she knew what it was 😂. It was only in the right eye too so I thought it was some digital error. I asked Reddit, tried to reset it, asked the official help center and I only figured it out from a video 💀

I accidentally did this to mine. I sat mine down to go do some stuff for like less than a minute came back and went to start playing again. Little did I know the spot I put it was directly in the sunlight straight through my window and when I put it on there was a yellow dot there permanently now. So ya don't do that pay attention!
The lense is facing your eye. Sunlight going INTO the oculus it will scatter the light in a thin film. Still don't put it in the light because you can lose some pixels. The lense can't focus both ways
Yeah... But the lenses never see direct sunlight.... Because they are behind screens. However, they are not designed to be outside as the cameras are designed more for lower light environments. It's not a good idea to take your oculus outside... But not for this reason. If direct sunlight DOES get in through the exposed side of the lens it can burn spots into your screen.
Im an audio engineer, not a light person, but wouldn't it not be focused because it would be going in the opposite way? Light is focused from the screen to your eye, but if shined through the other way, wouldn't it refract?
Sorry, but I read that it's actually that the lenses of the cameras can burn dead spots in the camera sensors destroying the tracking if used in harsh sunlight. So, there is more danger of breaking it and not f it being a fire hazard.
The thing I hate about “oculus” people is that they call vr “oculus”. Bro, leaving ANY vr headset in the sun is bad, not just oculus. My index will also get sun damage if I leave it in direct sunlight for 10 seconds, who would’ve thought
