Same, buddy, same. Also I used to think that even his death was kinda of a cool way to go out. Quick, painless and on your own terms. Then I recently almost died from severe liver damage, causing me to swell up and be in agonizing pain for weeks cause they can't even give you strong pain medicine. 43 days off of booze but I doubt it will last.
@@johnnylebay2059 just keep trying you’ll find the way everybody has a way that works for them. That’s the mystery about it is there is no way that is universal. My way works for me. Your way is different. You might look at what I’m doing and say wow that is crazy but all that matters is I am sober and I have a manageable life that’s the goal just keep trying.
It's especially sad because it's largely a true, autobiographical story. John O'Brien, the author of the novel on which the movie is based, struggled with alcohol for years and eventually killed himself only a few weeks after learning that the movie was going to be made.
I really can relate to this movie. I was an alcoholic. Lost the woman I loved. Became isolated and suicidal. It was awful. Traumatic. Biggest event in my life. I’m “better” now but I will never be the same, and it still haunts me today. Divorce and alcoholism are incredibly hard, but things will get better. Just hang on. Literally hang on
@Bigd5080, Alcoholism is a life sentence.....if you're an alcoholic, it's forever. I think you know that. Divorced my alcoholic spouse 24 years ago. I attended AA meetings to find out what I could possibly do to facilitate his recovery: Absolutely nothing. Alcohol means more to my ex than his health, our adult children, or our grandchildren. Today at age 71, his health is a trainwreck. Denial has cost him the opportunity to live a vibrant, full life. Your recovery is the most important action you can perform to live a productive, meaningful life. It's worth it. You deserve it. One Day at a Time. Best wishes for your continued sobriety. 🌷
Oh no! I hope you can find a way back, and that you are getting help. I will pray hard for and pray that God intervenes and guides you to a better place. Please have hope. There is a better life out there for you. ☹️😢
It only takes 3 months work. Like picking in Napa Valley from end of august to beginning of octobre. This kind of stuff. Giving all your energy to build enough money for an intense 2 week-end in Vegas....
Not sure what it is about this movie that resonates with me. Ive watched it countless times over the years, most times while drunk. Even tho its highly deprssing it actually comforts ne when im drinking.
I remember seeing this movie when I was 12. My parents divorced. Now I’m 40 and my wife left me. This movie hits so hard now and I get it. Divorce can nearly bring you to your damn knees.
I'm a bit older, saw this as a teen and thought he was a moron. I mean its not a great way to live, but we don't know the backstory, not really. My wife left during covid. I didn't drink then, now I do. Heavily. There's nothing I see that's honorable or glorious about this and maybe by some miracle I'll get out of this rut, but whether I do or don't it still a sad story if we take it literally. The character looks in his mid 30s at most, good looking, but I guess once you cross a certain line its too late no matter what you had going for you. The guy this was based on shot himself to death after his book was sold to make the movie, whereas the character seems to give up in part because he knows his days of making a living are over...
I sympathize with you. I divorced at 32 years old (Now I'm 43). I remember laying on the bed of my temp apartment and thinking I have 2 options now. Either I start drinking or start taking care of myself. My brother was an alcoholic who had already almost died 2 times because of it so I knew where that road would lead me. So I started going to the gym. It became an addiction I guess but it's what I needed to survive. Now at 43 years old I've been happily remarried for 4 years. I know it might not feel like it right now but things can get better and you will get through this. It is going to take time to heal but make yourself a priority. Reconnect with your old hobbies and really get to know yourself, don't rush it. You've got this!
i pulled into vegas drunk pilling in cheap hotel after a hard day traveling..a rapper approached me to hustle me i said." notday mother fooker , not today"
This suffering Mr Cage (i even forget about his name in the movie, so much his acting is great)goes one first time to this room, then à second time and we see what he goes there for!!!his boy's bicycle....
Matchstick Men is one of my favorite movies. If you watch it more than once it just gets better with each rewatching. There are not many movies you can say that about.
I've been at this cliff in my life and asked God to save me . 10 years going strong now and I remember my lowest point .I will never forget . Thank you God !
Drinking is a mask for anxiety, depression, trauma and reality. Cage really gave one of the greatest performances as well as Shue. Ben is not even sure why he started drinking. Its a combination of giving up and facing his reality. Is drinking self destruction or a way to escape from the world?
I do not care for these terms of "drunk "!! He is only à suffering human beeing, see the child's bicycle, the photographs !!just watch that ! Nobody in Hollywood accepted to produce this masterpiece of a movie, the script writer got funds from Jean andLilianne Cazes in France. Mr Cage loved it so much, he accepted to perform for pranuts !!
End Stage alcoholism is far worse than the film depicts. Loss of bladder and bowel control, and worse - Wernicke's Encephalopathy (staggering and the losing one's ability to walk) and Korsakoff Psychosis (Neuropsychiatric dementia known as 'alcoholics dementia' - severe memory loss followed by psychosis). Just walking and thinking becomes impossible.
Don't forget to mention ascites and jaundice. I came to the ER with yellow eyes and a hugh painful gut, barely able to walk. And they can't even give you the good pain meds cause it might mess you up even more.
@@danielhicks4826 just paracetamol for pain. I was in agonizing pain for nearly two months and they couldn't prescribe anything stronger. Literary had to do heroin for the first time in my life in the hospital just to get some kind of relief. I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy.
@@johnnylebay2059 it's good you made it to an ER. It's good they didn't give you opioids and risk getting you started down that death road. And it's good you made a comment here to warn others. Stop the calcification of your liver and softening of your brain. Take it from me - you can beat it - and I promise, new worlds will open for you, and you'll see things in a new, better light. It's my own fault booze robbed me of years, good relationships, and distorted my view of everything. Like everything, it starts innocently until it's unmanageable. Those who love you, will forgive and forget. I hope this finds you well and a good road.
This reminds me of when I'm all liquored up feeling motivated, trying to clean my house or organize some shit, but then just wake up from my stupor the next day and it's worse..
Лучший фильм Николаса Кейджа. Получил «Оскар» заслужено. Он чуть не умер играя эту роль. Полностью перевоплотился в алкоголика. Оскар он получил сам (заслужено), без дяди Фрэнсис Коппола.
1:07 Alonso (Denzel Washington) does this same hand motion in the car when Jake looks over at him while being high on drugs. I wonder if there’s som influence from this scene here…
At least in the context of this scene I always felt like it’s sort of a “throwing it all away” hand gesture. He’s literally tossing his entire life into that flaming pile of garbage, so I always read this as him sort of mentally/physically replaying this in the recursive way that drunks tend to do when they get stuck on a thought.
Great movie Cage really put it all together. He nail it really good. I knew people that did this. One of them went to Viaques an island that belong To Puerto Rico. Cash in all his 401K and told the world kiss my butt. The other one went To Edcuador Cash in his 4K and told his family and the States F..k off. You know i dont Blame people that go this road. Enough is really Enough.
This is how misleading film industry was. No one in that state will have the coordination and will to set up a leave out like that, with such a tidy arrangement of garbage disposal. Similarly to the characters in Sex and the City, who would look much differently if they really had consumed all the romanticized cocktails served in the series.

It’s a pretty unfortunate situation that he was in for a while. I disagree that he’s only been in bad movies for the last 20 years, there are good movies that he’s made but there’s also quite a lot of mediocre to outright bad ones as well. Basically he’s just awful with money. He lost a lot of money in the real estate crash, has had multiple divorces and had a compulsive spending habit that was almost impressive. His financial situation was pretty bad for years and because of that he took a lot of roles that he shouldn’t have. He also did too many movies for years. I think he was doing about 4 a year for a while and although that may not sound like a lot, that is just an unbelievably grueling schedule for an actor. Taking bad roles and doing too many of them starts a snowball effect that can be devastating for an actor’s career. Audiences start to associate Cage with bad movies, audiences stop going to his movies, he starts losing better roles, gets offered even worse roles than before and it just gets worse and worse. His career during the past two decades is basically a cautionary tale for other actors.
I urge you to watch movies like bringing out the dead, and then Mandy. He might be like a Keanu Reeves, where meme culture might over hype him. But in all other aspects, he is an amazing actor and a lot of his films do go under appreciate it.
One of the Great movie going experiences of my life in 1995 was two uncompromising films. One of them being "Dead Man Walking" and the other "Leaving Las Vegas" 💥🪑/ 🚦🍹🍹🍹
