Some "old" guys are performing at a level even better than 30+ years ago. Rodney, Ray Wylie Hubbard, John Anderson, and Bobby Bare to name a few have some amazing music the past few years.
I discovered Rodney in the 1980's and this was always my favorite song of his. I worked on a horse farm in NC and mowed paddocks all day. I listened to the album this was on over and over. Finally wore it out. So great to hear it again, and yes, he does it even better now than back then. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories of that time in my life!
This has long been one of my favorite songs, but re-recording it with some years under your belt, I just feel like there's something deeper and more complex than in any previous rendition I've heard.
I agree. The slightly slower tempo and the additional emphasis on the Cajun musical style in the instrumentation and vocals really make this version shine.
Wilma Lee Cooper and I corresponded for many years. I told her what she and her husbands music meant to me. She responded back "Music is laughter to the soul, makes it happy." I was 13 or 14 at the time and I had no idea what she was talking about. Im 45 years old now.... I know what she was trying to tell me. Music will sustain you even in the darkest times.
Reminds me of time spent with my dad. Happy Father's day dad. Miss you, thanks for all you did for me. Rest with the angels now, you earned that, no doubt.
No one can do his song better than he can. He was Johnny Cash's son-in-law, and he earned his own way in to the annals of country music history. There is never any arguing with talent
This is magical. Excellent musicians making excellent music and having fun doing it. The young man playing accordion has the Cajun idiom down cold - I wish they had shown more of him during this session.
@@glennhfriedman4571 I just seen your reply. What are you trying to say? I've never, ever said a bad word about Rodney. Your comment sounds as if you are confused.
@Jams Staley The Americana music genre started over 30 years ago when musicians got tired of Nashville's over production. Some were inspired by Waylon Jennings "I Don't Think Hank Did It This Way". Now, the moniker refers to a lot of genres and musicians not signed to a major label. It's no longer a true musical genre. To me, if I can feel it I call it country music. I feel Rodney's music. It is country music to me. I wish they played real country music on local radio, but good music and good stations are hard to find. I just don't feel todays modern country music even when they cover his songs.
*Down in a li'l crawfish boil shack near Lacassine, we'd party all night shuckin' shells, drinking beer, and dancing to the Zydeco band playing this song over and over again, and it never got old, never. Laissez les bon temps rouler!*
I just discovered Rodney Crowell's other songs besides" I couldn't Leave you If I tried". I couldn't get enough of that song, starting about 6 months ago. Last night I started listening to his other songs, damn...I was up all night. . So many good songs. I can't get enough of this song too. He's not just a good looking ol'man, he's got such a grand musical soul. So glad I stumbled across him on here. Wow what a gifted music man. He really sparks and spreads his good energy to the great musicians playing with him too. Still has a great voice.
sure are great songs, have loved I Couldnt Leave you if I tried since the 80s :) was a favorite juke box pick a the all night coffee spot in town when I was a young guy
If you haven't read his memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks, you really should. He's not just an extraordinarily gifted songwriter but a damned fine writer of prose.
I love this song and didn't know where the Oak Ridge Boys got it...not even surprised to find Rodney wrote it! This and Flyboy are two of my very all time favorite songs.
The accordion really adds to the song, giving it that little "punch", although all the instruments sound awesome. I am looking forward to this new Acoustics Classics album when it gets released in mid-July. Rock on Rodney Crowell... Love these songs you're singing and playing again.
Rodney just keeps on getting better and better. A gift to anyone who hears him and senses the love and authenticity. God Bless Rodney Crowell and all his relations
Absolutely amazing: Crowell, Emmylou, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Waylon Jennings, Cash, Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, MMCarpenter, Carlene Carter, are all amazing artists who represent American culture at its best and cannot be put in the same Country category as rubbish like FGL, Sam Hunt, Dan+Shay and today's so called Country artists.
@@francinecorry633 yeah Linda Ronstadt wasn't she a beauty she could sing beautifully but you won't find true country anymore and talent is hard to come by unless they use an auto Mike
Songs are so nostalgic, this song takes me to the early 80s when I lived in Southern Louisiana. It was a culture shock but i had good friends that were very welcoming. We would fish off the back porch at Shell Beech Marina on Lake Verret while the band was playing... those were the most perfect summer nights ever. I miss living there.
Just heard this on SiriusXM Outlaw Country and had find it here to listen to it again. What a great performance and wonderful song. Thank you Mr. Crowell for all of the fantastic music.
I've just recently discovered this station. I've been a big fan of Rodney's all my life but the Outlaw Country station has introduced me to people like Mary Gauthier, groups like The Derailers....yeah. I'd have to say it's one of my go-to stations now.
This song really takes off at the 0:50 sec mark when the young man on the Cajun accordion hits full stride.. If you are sitting at a desktop computer, you will hear him working the squeezebox from the left speaker. Additionally, from 1:30 to 2:00 minutes listen to the interplay between the accordion and the fiddler.
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about classic country. Who wrote what, who played which instruments on what songs, what years they came out, etc. etc. You learn something new. After all these years I had no idea Rodney Crowell wrote this. And here Ive been knowing this song since the late 70s. I know he had a lot of hit songs recorded by other people but I never gave this one much thought.
Earthbound was my introduction to this man and his music one day a few years ago then I heard first time hearing Johnny Cash.Blew me away ❤️Love everything of his I've heard.Legend...
Rodney wrote this as inspired by Mary Kay Place. " Mary took to runnin' with a travelin' man". Great song by the main song writer, along with Donivan Cowart.
I've always liked this song, but this version REALLY brings out the story and the music in the way you would expect to hear it down in Louisiana on the bayou. Laissez Le Bon Ton Roulet !!!! We may have to add this song to our set list. Thanks, Lew Dawg, The Stray Dawgs, Plantation, Florida
Love RC, one of my favorite events in my life was being his opening act at the Tulsa state Fair in the 90s. He had Stuart Smith on guitar on that show. Incredible.
Rodney, I fell in love with you when you first did “Couldn’t Leave You if I Tried “. We were about the same age back then and I still watch the vid today. Love all your music and still love you.
Never heard this song by the actual person who wrote it. Mostly knew it from my youth listening to the Oak Ridge Boys 8 track in my dad's 18 wheeler as we hauled turkey feed to the local farmers. Later heard it from Shovels and Rope, and then EmmyLou Harris. Love all of the renditions, but to hear it from it's creator... something special!
Love you Rodney!! We saw you in November 2019, not realizing it would be our last concert for nearly two years. Love this song so much, it’s my husband’s favorite 😍
