A subscriber of mine, Big Scott, moved to Thailand almost 2 years ago. He sold everything in the US and made this huge move. We did an interview and soon became friends. It cost him a fortune. for an abundance of reasons which he will explain he is moving back to the US. Moving around the world is not for everyone. Scott's cautionary tale will be good info for someone who is on the fence and is only hearing positive aspects about Thailand and moving abroad in general. No where is perfect.

My name is Brian but everyone calls me Greeny. I retired in January of 2020 after working 30 years in Law Enforcement. I wanted to retire young enough to be able to do some of the things I always dreamed about! I knew I wanted to travel extensively and retire somewhere warm and exotic I sampled a ton of places in the Caribbean, Panama, Colombia, Turkey but set my sights on Thailand.

@robertgrays8790 - the Thai girlfriend won't last in Texas! The cultural differences and loneliness, especially homesickness will have her right back in Thailand. My dad was retired in Thailand for 15 years. On those 15 years he would always complain about traffic in Thailand, this and that. Come back to the states, and after 3 months complain about the price of things in America, the traffic there, and general cost of living. And then start planning his flight back to Thailand. It’s easy to move to Thailand, it’s difficult to make the move back to the states after that. I see this happen often to people.

Why did you get married? For the nominee , family future, Or just have fun and hope for benefits?(Most foreigners in Thailand) That's why it's difficult for you to get a Thai citizen. - don't buy a new truck = depends on your decision. - don't worry about the New Tax law = If you don't have financial problems or doing something illegal. Australian here. Born and bred in a town called Darwin. I have been visiting asian countries since the 80s. The roads are crazy, biggest vehicles have the right of way, its a madhouse. As for the heat and humidity, Darwin is in the tropics of Australia so the weather is about the same. But it grinds away at you. I'm retiring in a couple of years and moving to Perth. Great place, pretty much my second home already. Its descibed as having a Mediterranean climate, hot summers, mild, wet winters, but low humidity. And that's the killer in the tropics. When you retire, you definitely want to find that place you're comfortable in.

The point about the tax issue is super important, because it shows a larger issue: in all those countries (South East Asia) things can cgange, laws are not clear and basically there is no legal security as you know it in the US or Europe or Singapore. This is a constant threat, you could loose everything, get expelled for no reason and many other issues. The DTA (double taxation agreements between countries) agreements he's referring to will make your eyes watery if you are it paying attention to your incoming finance stream to a country which implements this. I cancelled my Colombian visa for this very reason). Many people blow it off and if and when the country’s tax authorities find out you will be hit with a huge fine as well as having to repay the tax you owe. Be warned! Be advised, if a country in which you have a residency visa does not have a favorable DTA agreement in place you may be subject to taxes on your overseas income. Things worked out well for me. I carefully planned my retirement. I came over in 1991 for a job in a joint venture factory. I was concerned regarding my retirement. There is no Social Security here. I was saving quite a bit of money working here because the company furnished a vehicle and housing including utitities. The Thai economy crashed around 1997 so that turned out to be the kick I needed to go back to the US for a good paying job. I worked and lived frugally in Southern California for five long miserable years. During that five years I was able to top up my social security account and build another pension. When I was financially able to retire at age 59, I cashed out the factory pension and at age 60 I started receiving a private small pension. I bought a decent condo for cash and at that time still got 51 baht for a dollar. My financial situation allowed me to wait for Social Security until I would receive the ful benefit. Now with Social Security and the small private pension I have a healthy surplus every month. I'm not wealthy by any means but I am able to live exactly as I want and don't need to live on a budget.

Health insurance can start to become expensive after 65. It really depends on your financial situation. I pay most of the medical bills out of pocket because they are usually, but not always, 1/5 to 1/10 the cost in the states. If you have some money then you may look for a high deductible policy that kicks in for a very serious medical emergency. That should bring the cost down, but pre-existing conditions are usually excluded. Right now medicare part b costs around 2k per year if you sign up at 65 and it pays 80 percent of allowed costs after the deductible. The copay cost in many cases is higher than the cost for treatment in se asia. It is 10 percent more each year you delay signing up for part b. Part A pays allowed hospital costs for 60 days after the deductible. Nothing is perfect and no best answer. if you have very bad health then look first a place that has good medical care at a low price. I doubt America will give you the best deal. Most se asian policies exclude the usa for a reason.

Best of luck back in the USA. I am hoping to move to Thailand at some point in the next 5 years. I spent a month in Isaan and really enjoyed driving around. The roads are in general quiet and the drivers were in mostly very respectful. Yes there was the odd jaw dropping moment when you would see a manoeuvre that you would never see back home but it was nothing like as bad as I had been prepared for. Didn't enjoy Bangkok as much and certainly would never drive there.
@GK-yi4xv

Thai roads are off-the-scale deadly. Like, top 3 deadliest traffic in the world. Several times deadlier than U.S. roads. Worse in the countryside (per capita) than the city. Make sure you're ready for this.
@Mike-id7bh
@Mike-id7bh 8 месяцев назад
@@GK-yi4xv yes but you have to understand the reasons and not just look at statistics. 1. no seat belts are worn. 2. no helmets are worn. 3 most drivers do no have a licence. 4 large numbers of people travel in 1 car 5 no drink driving laws. all these things mean that if there is an accident it is likely to be more fatal than in a western country. so if you understand this, you can also understand that if you drive safely and carefully it is not quite as bad as what the statistics would suggest. So having driving country Thailand roads for 3 weeks they are certainly not off the scale deadly.

@@Mike-id7bh If you can drive in Southeast Asia, i believe you can drive anywhere. I started off with a motorcycle here in Thailand. Less that a year was in accident with a motor scooter who came driving on wrong side and suddenly turned in front of me. I cut his scooter in half but went down. I broke my foot, hand, ribs and had a concussion and multiple cuts and scrapes. My wife hit her head , had a concussion, cuts and scrapes, big bruise on her face from above the eye to down to her chin and had a blood clot on the brain. She spent three days in intensive care while they relieved the pressure on the brain from the blood clot. She also had six months of short term memory loss. She wouldn't ride with me on the motorcycle any more and i couldn't blame her. I didn't feel easy riding again so after six months i sold the motorcycle and bought a ford ranger pickup. That was eight years ago and still have the truck. It still looks as good as the day we picked it up from the dealer. My wife is meticulous about keeping it clean and everything in the house. We only have 41k on it and it runs great so has been a good investment.
@Mike-id7bh
@Mike-id7bh 7 месяцев назад
@@rondodson5736 Sorry to hear about the accident and hope there was no lasting issues. I don't think I would drive in a major city like Bangkok but if I had no other choice then I guess I would and it does help having a local in the passenger seat when you first drive. My original point was about taking the road toll as a guide to how dangerous it is to be on the road in Thailand. I don't think it is quite as bad as the toll suggests. I think at any one time at night in Thailand there would be 10000 people riding scooters without headlights working. No helmets on and probably half of them going the wrong way up the road. It's very hard to have a low road toll with all these factors.

I was a pilot for one of the US legacy airlines and retired a little early in 2020. Took the buyout (golden handshake) that was offered due to the "situation". It was a small bit of payback for what was lost post 9/11. I now split my time between Bangkok and the US on the elite visa. Not sure I'll make the leap to full time. But regardless, no way could I go back to the grind that commercial flying is today, even considering the recent massive pay increases and signing bonuses etc. I did go down to Pattaya a couple of months ago and took a spin in a Gyro-copter and now I want one! My building only has a pool. Would be nice if it had a gym, but I get so much exercise here that I don't need a gym. Long bicycle rides, or long walks, etc. Otherwise, the song thaew, Bolt, Grab, and the airport bus service for 141 baht, pretty much takes care of transportation needs. Enjoy!

Im Asian Am from the PI. came to the US 45 years ago to work marry and raise two grown boys. We visit the home country occasionally because of my parents properties and to enjoy the tropical weather and culture. The reasons you stated for leaving are reasonable and understandable. Foreigners going the the PI probably have the same sort of challenges except for the language issue since English is a second language in my birth country. Maybe you can make Thailand a frequent place for vacation between your work schedules this time around but not a permanent address. I can relate to the extreme heat as well having not lived in Asia for a long time. But to me the most salient reason for me to stay in the US as a senior citizen is that as one gets older one should expect the possibility of health issues that will start to happen and Medicare will not cover except fpr emergencies. That means that once a year you must still come back here for physical check ups as well as stay if your health issues need monitoring. In my country every health care expense is paid in cash and sometimes before a doctor or hospital can treat you. thats a deal breaker to me. All it takes is one serious illness and your cash is completely wiped out. All in all this video is a great information hub for others who are planning to go to anywhere in the developing countries in Asia. Its always pragmatic to do your homework first, and be honest in knowing and accepting the good the bad and the ugly about the place you want to set up your next address. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, as the saying goes.

If you're able to adjust to the 'Thai style' of things, it's actually pretty easy, but that takes time and an adjustment of your (westernised) personality. There were plenty of times where I had enough of living in Bangkok, moved back to my country of origin and regretting the decision after a few days. Thailand just has so much more pros then cons. All the great places this guy has been, and moved on from? I think I know what his deal is, and I am not criticizing him at all, this is just what I suspect, and I have seen it before. What this guy is searching for, it can never be found in a place, or in material posessions, or career successes, or food or substances or sexual relations. Actually I think he is not searching at all, he is running from, he is running from himself, from the lack of happiness and contentment that he carries within him. A person like that, and again I am NOT criticizing the guy, they will always find reasons to move on to the 'next place'. The reasons he gave, the heat, the traffic, the communication challenges, anybody going from a western anglican culture to an eastern oriental one, they have to know those things are going to be challenges for them. Take my word for it, he is not leaving for those reasons, he is leaving because yet another place did not bring the happiness and contentment he seeks. Happiness comes from within, by knowing what you are (and are not) and accepting yourself for what you are. Best of luck to the guy, and I sincerely hope he finds what he is searching for.............

Then I realized letting go of your own culture and embrace the new was a big turning point for me. I went back to the UK two years ago and then I knew there is no way I could adjust living their again. It was like a police state. Here in thailand your much more free. Don't miss speaking English and like this guy I don't eat thai food except pad thai. Lost 20 kg never felt healthier. Its about letting go of your own culture and embrace the new. My understanding of the tax thing is that Thai residents will be liable to pay taxes on overseas income... As in, (Wealthy) Thai people that currently avoid tax by putting income through overseas businesses. Most countries tax overseas income. Thailand was an outlier but they are getting in line with others. If you aren't a resident for tax purposes (180 days+) there is no suggestions that you'll be paying anything and if you are a resident but have paid tax on it in the country that it is earned and there is a tax treaty, you'll be fine. Some RU-vid channels are talking like you'll be taxed when bringing in money to fund your holiday spending...

One of the biggest problems i have with communication in Thailand is the literacy rate. You might have a translation app or whatever, but only about half the Thai people here can read their own language so it's still a big problem communicating here. Also is the question of people's intentions. Had a girlfriend that seemed great and not a gold digger. Long story short she ended up borrowing 80k baht and never paid anything back. The saving face thing is a mess because people will lie to you about anything if it makes them look innocent no matter how completely obvious it is they are lying.

I am from Florida, and am currently in Pattaya. I agree that the heat is extremely brutal. The traffic is also hard to get used to. Hua Hin is much cooler (more breezy for some reason), and more laid back (less traffic). When I retire it will be to Hua Hin (or the Philippines). Good video.

People underestimate the impact that language plays in living. Language is not just words we say or thoughts we have but language is the very core of a person- It is the expression of the culture you grew up and live in, the way to communicate in both words and body language, it impacts how you make decisions and allows you to fully participate in life. Learning another language is a multi- year endeavor and thats just for starters. How long did it take you to learn your mother tongue? Decades and most are actually still learning. If you speak english go and retire to an English speaking lower cost Country. Philippines - Business language and almost everyone speaks it. Belize- Everyone speaks it Costa Rica- Business language South Africa- Everyone speaks it- One of the official languages. Namibia- One of the official languages. Kenya- One of the official languages. Zimbabwe-Official language And many others. All of these places are at least 50% less expensive than Western Countries.

Kenya is very expensive. It is one of the most expensive countries in Africa. You do want to live in a safe area. The capital Nairobi is known as Nairobbery. The temperature is a excellent 74°F all year round. The coast can get extremely hot and humid. You could have a/c but the electricity goes out a lot. The worst is the water shortage. In Nairobi you have a couple of days to collect buckets of water if you live in a flat. Water pressure was really bad in both Nairobi and the coast. You can't take a shower like in the US. With the shortage of water, you have to do it the local way, using a bucket and sitting on a short stool. This is even in posh areas. You can get natural gas, but you have to transport a cylinder to your home as it is not pumped to the house. But the people are very warm and friendly, and gentle. Very different from West Africa in general. I read once Kenya was trying to deport all the Nigerians because of "scams and rough nature"...that is the language that was used. Apart from those problems which are minor....the country is beautiful and has a lot to offer. A lot of diversity in the landscape from grassy savannas to the desert in the North, to the lush green highlands around Nairobi to the mountains..ie Mt Kenya and neighboring Mt Kilimanjaro. The National Parks are stunning with Masi Mara where you are guaranteed to see a pride of lions in just 5mins of entering the Park. The lodges offer 5star service in the bush. I stayed at Mt Kenya Safari Lodge which had suit and tie dinner required. It was formally a club for the British aristocracy and they maintain that level of service. The coast has white sandy beaches equivalent to the Maldives at the fraction of the cost. They have foreigners that have taken over the coastal towns, they have German town and an Italian town where even the locals have learned these foreign languages. They have fabulous hotels on the coast. We visited a different one every evening for a drink. Yes, I would move to Kenya in a heartbeat. It is the best kept secret. Unfortunately health care is expensive, not as absurd as the US but you need a few thousands in your savings for a rainy day. I think it is so sad that so many Americans have not experienced Kenya. They would be shocked especially with their preconceived notions of Africa, some racist. When I was there twenty some years ago Johnny Carson was there. He had made several trips to Kenya. Some of the richest people in the world own a home in Kenya. Didn't know I would write an essay...sorry. I just love, love the country! The people I met that helped when I had car problems or got lost. All so willing to help for no money at all, just their good nature. Since they couldn't explain well how to get to a location they would physically walk you to it, and then walk back to where they were going. The coastal family who invited me to join them for dinner, after I got lost in the evening and was trespassing across their land. The people are incredible! We hired a young man as house help to wash clothes, dishes, clean house. He was incredibly gentle, always a smile on his face and ready to do anything you tell him to do, and shocked me by brushing my shoes every morning when I hadn't even asked him to do. I was so sad to hear he passed away. Steven was his name, I will never forget him. Kenya is one of the best kept secrets in the world!

Living in Thailand requires a lot of tolerance. It requires you to relax and push away a lot of preconceived notions, about traffic safety, about the way people should behave, about the gratitude that we should receive in return for our actions. All that kind of stuff, as long as you are able to be very adaptable, and very flexible, and get rid of your judgment, Thailand can be an extraordinary place to live in, very fulfilling and satisfying for a lot of us.

I live in Bangkok, I like to just sit and watch traffic, it is amazing. At first I thought it was really crazy. Now I think it is minimally crazy. The Thais are actually good drivers. Meaning that I would expect more accidents. They know the system . I have been driving a scooter here for 3 years. As a farang driving you need to have 100% attention on the road. Do not try and drive like the Thais. I was in 3 car accidents in my life, all in the USA and all the other vehicles ran red lights. I am from AZ, this heat is not so bad. Yes its hot, if too hot stay inside. Just like AZ, we did our outside activities in the morning and at night. Right now in Bangkok the weather is cooler, very comfortable. I am 62 not in the best shape, 25 lbs overweight. I play badminton 2 x a week for 2.5 hours, no AC. I play pickleball 1 x a week for 2 hours. no ac. I drink lots of water before I play and during and after as well as electrolytes. I lived in Ohio most of my life and will take the heat over the cold anytime. If you are into sports and stay in decent shape you will enjoy Thailand and heat will not be a problem. Sitting all day in a bar somewhere in Pattaya or Jomtien might get old quicker than staying active. The language barrier is an issue, but I cant understand most of the Austrailians and UK people when they speak english either.
