When Bird came back to play...after that fall......he had a fractured cheekbone... A concussion... & double vision!!! Yet... somehow he played and they won the game! I don't know of any other player ...that would have come back out to play after being hurt that bad! That man had more heart then any other player that I know of that's played basketball!

@FREEZO410 I’m sure you already know that Bird and Magic’s legacies are forever intertwined. Two videos that are definitely worth checking out if you are interested, as a fan of basketball are 1) “The Magic Man”, which is another Magic highlight compilation that is different from his Ultimate Mixtape, and “ 2) “A Courtship of Rivals”, which is a documentary telling Bird’s and Magic’s story. It’s one of the best documentaries I’ve seen and really highlights how important and special these two were to the game of basketball. I’ll leave the links in a separate comment. A reaction video to the shorter one would be cool, but not necessary. Check them out, tho. You’ll be glad you did…

I don’t know if you’ve heard the story but you probably have. Larry Bird had in his contract that if he continued into 1994 he would earn $5 million a year. On August 12 I believe, he walked into the general managers office and told him he was retiring. His contract was to renew for $5 million on August 15, the general manager said “ Larry why don’t you take a week and think about it. Larry looked him in the eye and said, I know what day it is, and if I can’t play at 100% I’m not gonna take your money. That says a ton about Larry’s character !

The pass behind his back that you called unnecessary was in the game following Magic's announcement that he'd been diagnosed with HIV and was retiring immediately. Bird was crushed by the news. Back then, HIV was a death sentence. That pass, right there in the middle of the court, was for Magic. Bird had a hard time controlling his emotions that night.

The retirement ceremony was a testament to Bird's legacy at Boston. The stadium held 14,890 souls, the Garden had no game or other event scheduled for that night and It sold out to a standing room only crowd. Bird is one of the top tier greats of the game. Anyone who don't get that, don't know basketball from horse shoes.

My dad has been a Lakers fan since forever, I'm born and raised here in LA a lifelong Lakers fan myself, and even though I wasn't old enough to ever see Larry Legend play on TV, I'll always remember my dad shaking his head at any mention of him at the fact that Larry was just way too good and made that 80's Celtics team one of the greatest in the history of the game for ruining a lot of Lakers victories. Magic is my favorite player of all time but goddamn, Larry was something else, and I feel he deserves his nickname, Legend, for being the most unassuming looking dude ever with little athletic gifts who still dominated the game in ever facet ever. The dude talked the most shit in NBA history, backed it up, and toyed with the best players in the world out of pure fun and killer instinct competition because he could. That's why I was hella confused when I was a little kid and my friends who were into basketball like me dismissed Bird like he was just some outlier 3-point shooting white guy and nothing else when Bird did everything while regularly putting up triple-double statistics all the time - even after his back was debilitated and his body breaking down on him. Folks don't know that Bird was the real deal of NBA basketball and now that I'm older, I can appreciate Larry Legend was an absolute monster on the court, and his rivalry with Magic was just way too good and almost perfectly scripted that saved the league when those Finals battles were real wars being battled on television. I apologize for the block of text but I find it tremendously cool that more people are finding out about this man and his legacy from folks like you on RU-vid to appreciate NBA basketball when it was its golden era, players earned their pay for staying on the same team to compete and win, nobody was afraid of getting hurt to do it, and the idea of joining your rivals to win rings was the exact opposite philosophy when Bird and Magic were thriving.

I saw almost all of Birds games. Some of them live. I can tell you without a doubt that Larry Bird is the smartest most clutch player I have ever seen! He is the purist shooter you will ever see. Unlimited range, could make any shot. The 1986 Celtic team is still the greatest team I have ever seen play. They went 40-1 at home. If you want to see a basketball team play as one, watch some of those games. Bird was unbelievable. Larry won his third straight league MVP in 86. Bird is the most complete player I ever saw. He could do it all. He only played 13 seasons because he broke his back and had surgery on both feet. After the 87 season. I believe if he hadn't got injured and was able to have a full career, he would have put up some numbers that no one would have touched. He was one of a kind, there will never be another Larry Bird!

Comparing old players vs new players is always interesting. Newer players have more well rounded skill sets, partly thanks for players like Bird and Magic, who were bigs who could play any position. They also have much better training and health care. Older players were cut from a different cloth, though, and were generally tougher and more competitive-minded. Some of them, like Bird, did not care what the media thought of him and even told them so, and he hated the stupid controversial stuff they like to create. I'm a big fan of some of today's players, like Kyrie Irving, Jokic, Giannis, Steph Curry, and others. But if I was going to start a championship dynasty, the very first player I'd draft is Larry Bird. Then I'd get Jordan, and go from there. Bird was not only an elite level individual player but he was a great team player. He had unshakeable confidence and could not be intimidated, and he was tough as nails. And every player and coach knew he was going to be a problem. He was just a menace until he retired.

At 14:28, Bird had "an apparent fracture of the right cheek". He had a mild concussion when he came back to the game and was seeing multiple baskets. So all of the shooting you see after that point, he had to guess which basket he was shooting for. Also, people talk about his shooting ability but many overlook the fact that he suffered an injury to his right index finger before beginning his NBA career. The finger is shaped much like a boomerang, permanently bent toward his thumb at a 45-degree angle. Two operations failed to straighten it. He can bend it only halfway to his palm.

He is without doubt the BEST ever. There are more flashy and attention grabbing players with hype perpetuating their greatness, no doubt. He is a TEAM the central processing unit that milked every drop of play those other 4 on the court had. He makes plays happen that are not stat evident. He was the secret sauce, 11 Herbs and spices. If you were making a dream team thats why he would be so far ahead of all the rest. When Magic Johnson calls him the greatest player ever thats hard to dispute. MJ said he was defiantly better than LaBron James, how do you argue. Him and Magic Johnson saved the league and MJ came in and sent it to the top. 2nd comment. You should look up what made Larry who He was. Hardship. His dad once had a work injury...foot swollen ...and Larry helped his Dad get that swollen foot into his work boot. That helps explain Larry's work ethic. When he fell in that video...did you catch that he fractured his face? That would be incredibly painful. Also...from time he was very little, he played BB with older African American kids. That's WHY he plays so well! And...he had to retire early because he went home one summer and did manual work on his mother's drive way...if I remember right. Could have hired it done. Ended up injuring his back and that shortemed his playing career. Also...before he began his NBA career, he severely injured a finger playing baseball. This affected his shooting ability! But...he did not let that stop him! There are many great videos re Larry Bird. He is extremely humble, too! He is inspirational! Worked hard. Must admire that. Re style of BB back then. Energized! Love the fast pace, the short shorts, and men even getting into a fight on court once in a while. Men and sports have been MOMMIED. Lebron hurt his groin, kobe hurt his achillies … Larry bird came back in the same quarter with a fractured cheek bone and shot out the lights to bring the game back and win single handily then go off to hospital lol. One year during the conference finals, between games larrys back was so bad he spent the entire time in hospital “ in traction ( having a machine pull his spine apart to relieve pressure ) so that he could stand up and play each day for 40mins before he went for surgery. He also had bone spurs so bad he had to have double foot surgery. Mean while, he had all this while beating the nba best ever players and sweeping MJ 6-0 in the play offs and regular season, dropping 60 and winning back to back MVP x 3. Not to mention he started the 50-40-90 club. And shot it back to back seasons.

That pacers game, he feactured his cheek bone, the team doctor refused to let him go back out. So he snuck out of the locker room when the doctor was distracted and checked himself back into the game. The night before that game he was in traction for his back. That whole season was insane on how tough the man was He played with a compressed nerve and ruptured disc in his back Got back surgery, and was told his season over that no one could ckme back the same season, he missed 22 games.

If it's about skill, Larry has to be the GOAT. Both hands, any distance, against anybody, bultin radar, tough as a nail. Incapable of giving up. Announcing his next move to the opposition out of boredom. "Two dribbles, to the left, off the glass" The clutchest man to ever play - any sport. Got his teammates in the HOF by making them better. I love Kevin, Robert, DJ - especially DJ, what a guard - and Danny and all the others, but would they have gotten to the HOF if they played for the Hawks? Or any other team? In the clutch the whole building knew what was gonna happen. In case they didn't get it:"I'll get it right here and stick it in your face" And still nobody could stop him. Time and time and time again. He terrified the best players in the world. And the best thing for me: He doesn't brag about it. You hardly ever hear a word from him. Despite his physical disadvantages he came up with a way of winning anyway. By playing it better than anyone else. The founder of the 50/40/90 club. Nobody thought this was possible until he showed them. Twice. And almost over a 5 year span. A better rebounder than Patrick Ewing and in the top 50 rebounders ever. Until today. 3x MVP and 5x runner up. Allstar as a rookie. In my opinion the GOAT has to at least win against the competition he is facing, since he can't play Wilt or somebody anymore. That's MJs achilles. Larry had to quit for him to start winning. Lebron is just not good enough - no clutch here and he's a pussy. Never won anything without a superteam assembled for him. I was lucky and got to see Larry doing it. He did something in almost every game that made you wonder, how the hell he did that. I had that 33 jersey back then and I never ever took it off. That got me that nickname :) The man was called legend while still playing for a reason. And these were different times - you had to earn a nickname like that.

Young man....as a Boston kid, I got to watch this kind of stuff IN PERSON. Bird played in an INCREDIBLY talented, and a BRUTALLY tough league. No kidding....it was sometimes a literal BRAWL under the basket. Hate to tell you, but only a small handful of today's "stars" would be able to play in the 80's. It is refreshing to watch a younger man like you watching and able to dissect the players of the past.

So cool to see young guys like you, who obviously know a ton about the game, appreciate Larry Bird. I saw him play back in the Eighties, and the highlight reels don't lie. He had a hundred ways to beat you, and he was a cold-blooded killer in crunch time.
@Phished123

one of the craziest things about Bird was how bad his back was by the end of his career when he was still playing, he had lost structural stability in his back which would cause it to slip into awkward positions and lock up to try to regain that stability. Docs would have to basically unlock his spine, realign it and help it stay that way for the duration of a game. It was so bad that during practices and sometimes during games he couldnt even sit on the bench for fear of his spine locking up so he had to lay down on the floor. Even with all that, in his last season he still played 36 minutes a game, with a FG% of .49(something), a 3% of .406, 9 rebs per game, close to 7 assists a game, and 20 points per game. Larry Legend was different.

My top 5 1) Jordan 2) Bird 3) Russell 4) Robertson, Oscar (The Big O) 5) Abdul Jabbar Bird was an all around player, who always hustled, kept working on the court even when he didn’t have the ball, was the most effective and biggest trash talker ever(but could back up every word of it), had a competitive drive higher than any other before him, was a natural leader and made every player on his team better, and to this day probably has the highest basketball IQ of any player ever. You really need to see all his trash talking videos to understand just how insanely he trash talked everyone, not just average players, but every single great player he faced, including Jordan. Who Bird swept twice in then playoffs by then way. Jordan admits fully that he hated Bird, because he ruined all his great games, but also gives Bird all the credit as to where he learned how to trash talk and mentally disrupt the opposing team. Two of favorite stories….1) Craig Elo was guarding him and Bird had a terrible first half….as they were walking towards the locker room, Craig Elo puffed up and said to Bird, “you’re 1 for 10, that’s great defense!!!” Bird looked at him stone cold and said, “there’s two halves.” At the start of the second half Bird scored 10 straight buckets on Elo, shooting the last one with his left hand, and then Bird asked Elo, “Is your mother watching?” john Stockton said his rookie year with the Jazz, he remembers when the Celtics came to play, Bird walked by their bench before the game and said he felt good tonight and that he felt like 43 points. Halfway through the 3rd period Bird scored reached 43 points, and checked himself out of the game. 😊

Also, dude was a career double-double 24, 10, 6.5 ast. Pull up his ish on basketball reference. He had a six year run you can put up against anyone. The man was all across the scoresheet every night. There isn't even a discussion about top 10, he's in. The argument is really top 5 when you really break it down.

As a Showtime fan Larry owes me a Lot of sick days. The last 2 minutes n clutch time, my stomach was in knots 33 was his # got 3 chips, 3 consecutive MVP’s (3rd player ever to do so), 3 3pt champ. Founded 50/40/90 club, 2nd highest win % just behind my man Magic. My favorite Bird quote ‘ I don’t like players who watch ball go outta bounds’ Just think all 80’s team Magic PG, MJ SG, Bird SF, Barkley Rodman or Mchale @PF plus Kareem & Hakeem @ center. Isiah Thomas & Worthy on bench. Slaughter todays all stars with 4 🐐 contenders

I remember when Larry finished that game after falling and fracturing his cheek bone. Also he played an entire game with a fractured thumb. If you dont know how bad that hurts, consider yourself lucky, because I fractured my thumb once and there's no way that I could have played a game of basketball like that. I firmly believe because he was so basketball smart, that it made him the absolute best player that ever lived....in his heyday. He played for the Boston Celtics for 13 years!!

Check out at least a few other videos on him like 5 Times Larry Bird Was Injured But Refused to Quit (you won't believe what he endured and played through!), the Making The Case for Larry Bird video, and Larry Bird trash talking videos. I'm sure you'll get some other suggestions, but these are ALL worth your time and from what I've seen on other channels, will help your channel blow up.
