Larry Bird finished 1st or 2nd in the regular season MVP race 8 years in a row. 2nd 2nd 2nd 1st 1st 1st 2nd 2nd. He did this in an era with Michael Jordan and some of the all-time greats. Also as a rookie he won rookie of the year made the all star team was all NBA, and finished 4th in the MVP race. He was awesome!!!!

It’s time Larry gets the recognition he deserves. And I would take Larry over KD,. Larry over Magic, Larry over EVERYONE. Larry’s one time Coach Bobby Knight nicknamed Larry “Kodak” because his mind was like a camera, he registered where everyone was on the court. Coach Knight also said Larry had the best hand/eye coordination of anyone who ever played the game. Wilt picks Larry first for his starting 5. Kareem said Larry was the toughest, smartest player he played against. The list of praise by fellow greats he played against is a long one! And YES, LARRY IS THE CLUTCHEST. One thing I think needs emphasis is that Larry has the second best win percentage in bball….only 10 games behind Magic at #1. THATS EPIC.

@@youdontsay2181 Yes. But most ppl won’t dive that deep. I’ve looked at the numbers. Magic played about 9-10 more games. He had about that same number of wins over Larry, and one less loss. I wonder….if we left out Magics comeback games, would there be a change?

Larry legend was the complete package. He could do it all. Clutchest, Smartest, Greatest shooter, Unbelievable passer, would d up on and anyone and could rebound with the best of them. He gave everything he had in every game he played. The greatest player in most people's eye's Micheal Jordan, never beat bird in the playoffs. I think that's says it all. There will never be another Larry Bird!

Clayton's video is great but there are two things about Bird that Clayton didn't get into too deeply. First, Bird would tell the oppositition exactly what he was going to do and where he would do it on the floor, and they STILL couldn't stop him. A healthy Bird at the top of his game was virtually unguardable. And the second thing that Clayton didn't cover very deeply was Larry's health. He had numerous serious injuries over his career. Most notably Bird hurt his back about halfway through his career when he was shovelling gravel for his mom. Bird's doctor has said that Larry's spine was pretty much permanently injured and he had to literally lay on the floor because of how much pain he was in. You can find pics on the internet of Larry laying by the bench because he couldn't sit in the chairs. James Worthy said he'd rather guard MJ than Bird. And Pat Riley said if he needed a guy to hit one shot to win a game, he'd take MJ. But if he needed a guy to hit a shot to save his life, he'd take Bird. Whether Bird is "The Goat" is certainly a subjective question, but Bird is certainly top 3 of all time. And sorry but Bird would school KD or any current player.

Excellent reaction K. Watch this reaction and you’ll see your making the case he’s the best. The last 5 years of his career he played with a bad back. His teammates said he could barely get dressed for the games and spent hours stretching and having adjustments to his back just to play. They had to cut both his Achilles’ tendons to remove bone spurs on both feet. The next year he never missed a beat making the all star team and finished 2nd in the MPV voting. Also the year he retired he told the owner of the Celtics a week before his contract would kick in that would pay him 7 million that he was going to retiree. The owner said take a week and think about it knowing that his contract would kick in. Larry told him “ I know what your doing and I’m not taking 7 million knowing I’m not going to play, it’s not right”. That’s the greatest example of honor in a selfish NBA. Great gob. Thanks

Larry grew up at a time, like others of his generation, when there weren't fancy basketball camps for kids to attend to improve their skills. He did it by practicing for endless hours. Just good old hard work that led to his now famously-known work ethic. Since high school he was known to begin every morning with 500 jump shots. He also had to hit 99 free throws in a row or he would start over. It's not coincidental at all that he led the NBA in free-throw percentage four times. The day would continue with a long distance run, then he would practice with his teammates, do a few more hours worth of shooting drills, lift some weights, do hundreds of sit-ups and go for another run. He more than made up for not having the natural athletic ability of many of his opponents by being the most mentally and physically prepared player and by giving the greatest effort. Five years after he retired from the Celtics he became the head coach of the Pacers. As part of training camp he required the players to run a mile for time. Larry ran with the players, some who were half his age, and beat all of them with a time of 5:20 Some people get caught up in the flash and dash of quick, high-flying players. Sure, it's hoops eye candy, but it doesn't count for anything on the scoreboard. The ball still has to go in. Larry wasn't athletic by NBA standards, but he averaged 24-10-6 over a 13-year career. He took the Celtics from a 29 win team the season before he arrived in Boston to a 61 win team his rookie year, and that was before McHale and Parrish joined the team. The 60+ win seasons would happen five more times in the '80s, as we'll as three 55+ win seasons. Larry led the Celtics to five finals appearances in seven seasons ('81-87), including three championships. In those five finals he averaged 23-12-6, including a near triple-double in the '86 finals when he averaged 24-10-9 for what many consider to be the greatest team in NBA history. From '84-86 he won three consecutive MVP awards, joining Bill Russell and Wilt as the only players to have accomplished this and he did it at time in the league when there was Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Isaiah, Laimbeer, Michael, Julius, Moses, Barkley, Dominique, Drexler, Bernard King, Hakeem and Sampson among others. He was selected to the All-NBA first team in each of his first nine seasons from '79-80 to '87-88 and made the All-Star team 12 times, the only absence being in '88-89 when he played in just the first six games of the season due to season-ending surgery on both of his heels to remove bone spurs. All twelve of the players who were on the '89-90 Eastern Conference All-Star team (Larry, Isaiah, Michael, Barkley, Ewing, Parrish, McHale, Dumas, Dominique, Reggie, Scottie and Dennis) are in the Hall of Fame, with nine of them being selected to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996 and eleven of them being selected to the NBA's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2021. Eight of the players who were on that year's Western Conference All-Star team (Stockton, Magic, Worthy, Hakeem, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Drexler and Mullin) are also in the Hall of Fame and are on both the 50th Anniversary team and 75th Anniversary team. Considering the incredible talent that Larry played against, his accomplishments are even more impressive. Larry had the NBA's first 50-40-90 season in '86-87, shooting .525/.400/.910 and improved on it the following season shooting .527/.414/.916. He also won three consecutive three-point contests, the only ones he competed in. He is undeniably one of the most clutch shooters in NBA history with a nearly unmatched work ethic, and he often played hurt. Charles Barkley once said, "Larry Bird can't run or jump because that was God's way of keeping the game fair." Maybe he's right because can you imagine a player with the basketball IQ and mastery of fundamentals that Larry had in an athletic body like Michael's or Dominique's?

Bird was 50/38/89 with 6.3 ast and 10 rebounds for his career, ROY (4th in mvp that year), then 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3, 2 in the next 8 mvps, against much better players than they have today. 38% career 3pt, and he only attempted 2/game. 89% ft @ 4.4/ 5 per game. Then there are all the passing skills you've noticed, and his ability to fake a shot or fake a pass because the whole league knew he was a threat to do either. His teammates knew that they had to be ready for a basketball to just magically appear in their hands, unannounced, anytime Larry was on the floor... only Larry knew where the ball was going... There is noone in the game today that is better than bird was

I know everyone claims Larry isn't fast...or athletic...but watch him play 79-84... before he permanently injured his back. .and again before '89...where he missed that year due to surgery on BOTH feet. But his GOAT status actually is after all that . Playing the Pacers in a playoff game. His back is causing so much pain..he can't get dressed without hours of rehab...THEN he fractures his checkbone diving for a ball. In the locker room, the doctor says he's done ...but he keeps an eye on the game. When it's only a 7 pt lead...he asks for a beer. Then shows up court side. And puts the nail in the coffin over the and over ..to win the game. Man had almost no athleticism left...and STILL smoked em. All SKILL. And that's why he's always will be the GOAT. Great reaction. 😄

A lot of people put Jordan as GOAT. I put Bird up there. Reasoning is simple. He played his entire career not having the same feel for the ball after shattering a knuckle on his shooting hand in college. He was STILL able to become the first member of the 50/40/90 club. Add to that the devastating back injury he suffered in 1985 building a driveway for his mom. More than half his career was played AFTER that injury. He would go in and get it adjusted to be able to play the game, then go out and play the game as hard as he did. It was so bad toward the end of his career that he would lie down on the sidelines when he was taken out of games, just to try and help relieve the pain. His doctor said: Imagine slamming your finger in the car door. Now imagine someone pushing on the door. That's what Larry Bird played with every night. He still accomplished what he did, despite that. I dare you to name ANY other player that would be able to do that. Hell, one time he had a toe infection. It got so bad that the trainer had to cut it open to help get it out. When he was asked if he wanted anything for pain, Bird reportedly said: "You got a beer?" No player from this generation or the one before would be able to do that. Probably a couple from Larry's generation and before, but not many. They would be out for 2-3 weeks and would likely play reduced times to allow it to heal. Bird just laced up his sneakers and made everyone else look like fools. He was a badass country boy that was tougher than he looked and a badder baller than even the best players of his era. Now let's address perhaps the biggest reason I have Larry Bird over MJ as the GOAT: Jordan couldn't beat Bird. He put up some obscene numbers against the Celtics but Bird was his Boogeyman. A losing record in the regular season against Bird and the Celtics. Hell, Jordan scored more than 100 points in two games against the Celtics in the playoffs. They were STILL swept in that series. Jordan had two best of 5 series against Bird and the Celtics. Swept both times. 0-6. GOATS find a way to win. Jordan couldn't do it. Not very GOAT-like if you ask me. I'll leave you with these words from legendary Coach Pat Reily (not sure exactly the phrasing): If I had to choose, I would want Jordan to take the shot to win the game. If it was a shot to save my life, I would pick Larry Bird.

Michael Cooper said that Larry was the hardest player he ever had to guard. He said most players were only dangerous with the ball so you could rest if they didn’t have it….but Larry was dangerous WITHOUT the ball too. He’d be running all over the court, never resting, always trying to be where he could do the most to help his team. And he was a triple threat. He could rebound, pass or shoot. At a split second’s notice, it could change too, which was another reason why LARRY was so deadly, and why he was so good at faking everyone out.

I really liked your reaction and observations. Yes, it is difficult to say who the GOAT is. Here are the things that Larry did which few, if any other players have done. He made his team better and involved all of them in the game, Was he a great passer - yes. However, watch the video again and this time look at the people he was passing to. They were not surprised by the passes, they expected that it might happen and were ready. Time after time he told the other team what the play was and where he was going to shoot the ball from even before the play started and they still could not stop him. Byron Scott tells it best - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h2iyF5dgiIo.html How many other players have told the other team they were going to play most of a game shooting with their off hand and then went out and did it. But maybe the most remarkable thing about Bird was how great he was even though he was injured from the very start of his pro career. After his final college game in 1979 and before his first game in the NBA , while playing baseball, he broke the index finger and shattered the knuckle on his shooting hand. Bird himself said that his feel for shooting was never as good after that. Then Bird hurt his back while building a driveway for his mother in 1985. During the last couple years of his career he could not even sit in a chair but had to lay on the floor during games and yet in the 1991 playoffs against the Pacers he dove after a loose ball smashing his face into the ground and had to leave the game. Of course once the Celtics started losing Bird game back out and led them to a victory. Bird made that dive with a bad back and if he had not there would have not been anyone saying one word about it because his back issues were well known. But that's no how Bird played, If he was on the court he was giving it everything he had - injuries or not. One time Bird played 3 weeks with an infected toe. When the pain became too much he went to see a doctor who told him that an incision needed to be made and the infection drained. The doctor told Bird he wanted to give him of shot of local anesthesia but Bid said no, just give me a beer. Bird drank the beer and the doctor made a 2.5 inch incision in between Birds toes and drained the infection. That night Bird wrapped up his foot had played. If today's players have even a small injury they sit out. Larry Bird on the other hand played as long as he could walk.

I came across some stats compiled from a RU-vidr Rob Gelford I need to credit for his effort. It leaves Bird in a company of one which is astonishing really. Rob Gelford said "Larry Bird is the best all-around player of all time. There are players that scored more, had more rebounds, played better defense, etc. , but Bird could do it all As a matter of fact I looked at 8 specific statistics Field goal % Free throw % Points per game Assists per game Rebounds per game Steals per game Blocks per game Minutes per game. Larry Bird is in the top 250 NBA players of all time in each of those categories. Magic isn't, Jordan isn't, Kareem isn't, Lebron isn't, Kobe isn't, Barkley isn't Chamberlain isn't, Russell isn't, Stockton isn't, Nash isn't, Duncan isn't, Nowitzki isn't , etc. and the list goes on and on As a matter of fact Bird is in the top 60 players of all time in 6 of the 8 categories - Jordan and Lebron just 3. However, what Birds most amazing accomplishment is that he did this while being injured his whole career. Most know of Birds back problems, why he had to build a driveway for his mother is beyond me. Many people, however, don't know about Birds shooting hand. After finishing his college basketball career and before starting his NBA career Bird broke the index finger and shattered the knuckle on his shooting hand. Bird has said he never shot as well after that." Thought that Info was worth sharing. Nice reaction.

Yes. Bird is the clutchest I've ever seen (since childhood in the late 70s). There is noone who you've seen in your lifetime that is better than bird, although Curry could wind up right there with him. Curry could feasibly ruin the nba, though, because every idiot in the league is firing up 3s that they can't hit, just because curry has been hitting them... today's players are really stupid, and cannot be coached about what they are not capable of doing, so they just keep doing it

Not bad. Give me Magic at point, MJ at the 2, Bird at 3, going to put Bill Russell at the 4, with Kareem at Center and my team smokes any team out there….hypothetically of course. My opinion. Russell is the best defender of all time and it’s not even close. He kept Wilt from attempting a shot in the whole second half of Game 7 in the finals lol. Finals MVP wasn’t a thing yet, but they named the trophy after him. Every clip I see of Bill he gets 2 or 3 blocks. Dude was phenomenal. Built a lot like KG or KD. 6’10”. Anyway, nice team you got there too. I love Tim Duncan, he is second all time in defensive win shares to Bill Russell

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot, thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced also the three point shot was viewed by most as a gimmick. Bird used it as a strategic weapon to end a game. Food for thought. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage If you need more proof, just look up the February 14, 1985 game Celtics vs. Jazz where Larry Bird was one steal away in the third quarter from being the second ever quadruple double in league history but he wold have been the first to record one in regulation play. The first one was recorded in Bulls vs. Hawks in O.T. October 18, 1974 that is Nate Thurmond, Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season. The final thing most are unaware of Larry Bird played with threats against his life.

Durant 1v1 against Bird, well, basketball is a team sport not a 1v1. Bird didn't always carry his team single handedly, he made all the players on his team play better just by being on the court. In what is considered the greatest play-off game ever, Bird and the Celtics faced off against Michael and the Bulls. Michael Jordan scored 63 points during that game, but the Celtics won in triple overtime. Bird didn't win the game alone. He did it by inspiring his teammates to raise the caliber of their own play to match his. Did you listen to Magic Johnson, "There will never ever, ever be another Larry Bird.

Larry Bird played from 1980 to 1993, and in 1985 he had a severe back injury that would force his early retirement eight years later. For more than half of his career, he was playing in severe pain. In 1987, Larry Bird won 6-0 against Michael Jordan with that back injury.

once saw a comment on Larry Bird that sums it up. it said Larry was more dangerous not shooting the ball because he could bring the whole team up. he could make the plays and still not shoot. Lebron or Jordan dont do a lot of passing since they usually want the ball. a coach once said also if he was picking to win a game it would be Jordan but if it was to save his life it would be Bird.

Clutch should be Larry's middle name. But look at this way: you want someone who will always show up and play hard. You want someone who leads by example. You want someone who can play through injury, even bad injuries. You want someone who can intimidate but not be intimidated. You want someone who is brilliant about the logistics of the game and knows where everyone is on the court at every moment. You want someone who can guard, who can shoot, who can shoot from anywhere on the court, someone who is generous with his team mates and is an amazing passer. You want to have someone who wins, and especially who wins in the clutch. In other words, you want Bird.

It's really interesting to hear your thoughts. I was lucky enough to grow up in Massachusetts and be 8 when Bird started his career, and be 21 when it ended. You're right - there were no holes in Bird's game, just as there were no holes in Jordan's game. The difference was injuries. Bird's body couldn't keep up with his indomitable spirit. His career was only 13 years, but they were the best 13 years of basketball, with Bird and Magic going at it almost every year, that the NBA ever saw. I think Michael is the greatest, but Larry is not nearly as far off as people think.

Larry Bird is the real GOAT, Bird could have averaged more points if he wanted to, but he knew, because of the NCAA championship, he needs his teammates to be in the game focused and contributing, if Bird averaged 35 points a game, his teammates wouldn't be as involved in the offense and dashing to open spots for open jumpers, they would just think Birs is going to shoot the ball and make it. One great player can't beat a great team. In Bird's NCAA senior season, 1st half of the season he averaged 30 points per game, the 2nd half of the season Bird averaged 40 points per game to get his team with no talent to the NCAA championship. All that Magic's Michigan State team had to do was double and triple team Bird to win because his teammates could not contribute enough. So rather than do everything in the pros to win, Bird had to get his teammates confidence higher and make them involved and contribute every second in the game to win. Maybe one on one, Bird may not be the best, but it's an NBA team game. I'm not sure if Bird is the best one on one also. He had great heart and great will to win and very reliable shots and a lot of different moves and can shit as good with the left hand also. His players and coach knew who to gi e the ball to whenever they needed a bucket, every player in the NBA knows who is taking that needed shot by the Celtics to win, all the whole arena or stadium knew which was taken that needed shot, but they was nothing anybody could do against it, it's just if the shot is going in or not, most times it went in, he us just the clutches NBA player in history
