Besides what you said about the 3 not being a point of emphasis during his era, keep in mind that MJ and players from that era didn't grow up with a 3 pt line to practice on. MJ didn't have a 3 pt line until his rookie yr in the NBA! Colleges didn't institute it nationally until 3 seasons after MJ left, and high schools the year after that. Imagine if MJ had been able to practice that shot since he was young - and we know how hard MJ worked in practice.

Jordan shot over 38% from three in the playoffs of 1991, 1992 and 1993. This shows he was able to make threes when he chose to. What brings down his overall average is the fact that in most seasons he simply chose not to ATTEMPT the three that much (as in fewer that 1 attempt per game). In the seasons when he attempted over two three point attempts per game, he shot them at better than a 35% clip.

Some idiot said he was no good at D, and so what happens... Defensive player of the year, while also being named MVP, top scorer, most blocks, steals, etc... and went on to be all defensive team 9 times. He was simply perfection to watch. A true artist where the court was his playground. He PLAYED with the opposition and simply did as he willed.

At the 11:56 mark MJ got away with a play that at times no team ever really expected which is why they called it “the dummy play”. He had passing skills as seen in the 1989 season. He played as a PG because the thought was he should have the ball more in his hands. He had 11 triple-doubles in 15 games. The problem was they lost most of those games. So they switched him back to SG and the rest is history.

Maybe Kobe was a slightly better player. But nobody had the style, the form-the hands to control the ball. The drive to work. Vertical leap. And the national WGN cable channel that made MJ an even bigger star (and show salesmen). The highlights don’t tell the full story-you have to watch a full game to see the full control over the game-his menacing defense-clutch again and again. The Bulls never had that great of a team, night after night he would take over and come back and win-it was incredible. The resolution is awful but you have to watch some full games.
