``According to tradition, Cadmus brought the alphabet from Phoenicia to Greece.`` Pure myth. But it's an etiological myth dealing, at least in part, with the art of writing. And you can see these etiological myths get refined, and changed over time -- up to and including the Bible. The 'Ash' or 'Æ' -- an Asherah pole? These letters themselves were considered in some sense divine. And some more than others. I find it fascinating how some still keep the Ash character, while most got rid of it. And it's worth meditating on the role these letters play in organizing our thought.
