i did not realize this was the last lecture and thought i would be able to continue with the 35th lecture, The Trojan War II. When the the lecture ended and there was no 35 and the rest was LLT180 and profesor got older, I felt a bit strange... now i continue with LLT180 and he's been a great teacher to me. thank you.
Arete, (αρετή) does not simply mean manliness. Homer uses it to describe women also, for example, Penelope, Odysseus' wife who faithfully waited 20 tears for her husband's return, in spite of the difficult time she had with her suitors. If there is one other word that we might associate arete with, it would more likely be "sophos" (σοφός) wise. In Homer's time, wise simply means knowledgeable, expert, effective, skillful, etc on some art or other. "sophos in spear throwing" or in "house keeping" etc. Arete is a closer synonym to sophos than to manlisness.
The goddess Artemis was angry because A few years earlier, Agamemnon went to her sacred precincts and killed her favourite animal, a stag and boasted to her that he was a better hunter than him. That is hubris, an insult against a god. This is the sort of punishment that he had to pay to her in recompense.
