Lecture: Who Dares Say He Believes in God?

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. (Mark 10:18; see also Luke 18:19).
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21, KJV).
I have been asked many times by many people if I believe in God. I don't like this question. I generally respond by stating that I act as if God exists, but that's not sufficiently true. Who could do that? Who could conduct themselves with the moral exactitude and care necessary of someone who would dare to make that claim? Either claim? In any case, after being asked the question yet again, when I was in Australia, I decided to attempt to answer it in some detail.
This lecture, one of the 12 Rules for Life tour talks, was delivered in Sydney Feb 26, 2019, at the International Convention Centre. It was one of six I had professionally video recorded. Five of the six will be released directly on thinkspot, our new social media platform (to be announced in mid-June), as a bonus for direct subscribers (not to worry; there are still more than 50 to be released as audio on the Jordan B Peterson podcast at bit.ly/2HUdgnc, so it's not as if there will be any shortage). But I thought RU-vid would be appropriate for this, given the potentially broad interest in the topic.
I've made a new playlist for it, too, entitled On (my) Belief in God. Three videos make up that playlist: this one, a 20 minute talk I did for the Prager summit in May of 2019 ( • On Claiming Belief in ... ), and an interview/discussion I had with Dennis Prager at the same event ( • On Claiming Belief In ... )
I would recommend watching them in the playlist order, which will be this lecture first, then my Prager talk, then the interview, if you're interested in doing so. I think they make a good group.The idea of belief in God is of extreme importance. I hope that these lectures and interviews add to everyone's understanding of my position and why I hold it.
As always, thank you very much for your continued support.
The adjunct videos are also available on the Prager U site: the lecture at • Jordan Peterson Speech... ; the interview at • Interview: Jordan Pete...
Thanks to the Prager U organization for the invitation and opportunity.

Almost JP like in the way you argue :) ignore the actual question and ramble some stuff. Every time I go to my grandparents for mothers day, instead of thanking my grandmother for cooking, when everyone does their little prayer and giving thanks. It's always "we thank god for this food" how about thank the people who actually cooked the food. The people who spend hours in the hot sun so that food gets to your grocery store. Nah it's all we thank god for bla bla bla. You don’t allow superficial belief, but challenge all who declare themselves Christian to demonstrate what a true follower of Christ should be like. Thank you Jordan for challenging me to think through all I claim to believe. Had I encountered you prior to beginning leadership of a church I feel certain I would have thought through more deeply what my objective would be and how I would have laid a foundational belief system for them and more importantly within me. If I m not living it out, then how can I instruct others? Did we not have christ and the apostles as the example of a believer in christ?...... is not love a sacrifice of care? are we not to die to self, meaning that we are not in ownership of our human logic and reason where we make choices?. If Christianity can be explained then where is the part of faith? are we not intellectually mind when we reason by theories of, what if?....... well we were told that all God works are finished at the end of the world!.... faith to believe is void of self importance in the process of life..... a full life can be a day to one hundred years plus according to purpose ..... a fulfilling life according to purpose is a life of sacrifice according to commitment to the gospel of Chris!... Many rewards are ordained to be in this life ( life without God with the evidence that there is a God)..... and there are rewards for the faith believer who life unto God in hope of that which is not seen that is yet to come by promise! Trail and error is man's theory for change But submission is what is required for change in the life of a believer Submission is without question of who is in charge rather it comes by knowing who is in charge!🤔.... The truth cannot be reasoned, it is to believe or to be rejected. The world by a cosmetic life have knowingly or unknowingly, rejected the truth....... truths can't be debated A lie is commonly believed in society to keep the estates of make believing that it is not the truth. What is truth? What is a lie? What is reason? What is mythology? Question what what you just heard and why it is horizontal. I recently finished "Beyond Order" and had to re-read it immediately. A magnificent book, one of the best I have ever read. Reading it, as well as re-discovering Dr Peterson's work this year, has really had a beneficial effect on me, and I am a woman of Dr Peterson's age group rather than the younger men who are so often inspired by him. I'd first heard of Dr Peterson in 2018, liked what I saw, but then ill health and the pandemic led me to lose touch with what he was doing. Of course Dr Peterson and his wife were very, very ill during 2019, 2020 and into 2021. It is remarkable that much of "Beyond Order" was written when Dr Peterson was seriously ill in various hospitals. He is a remarkable man, solid as a rock, a house built on firm foundations, a shining light in a dark world. Long may he stay safe, healthy and happy to carry on his great work. Looking forward to reading "Antidote to Chaos" when I can find it plus the book he's working on now "We Who Wrestle With God". I love watching his lectures and interviews.

It gave me my emotions back. It allowed me to feel and cry again. I used it to heal and feel some pf that pain but then i graduat3d to coke and pills by the end of the next year and then at 18 i started shooting Herion and meth and Coke. And then fentynal. At my worst it was 1 to 3.5 Gs a day. Also growing up i was physically abused daily to the extremes. thrown down stairs, through walls, glass smashed on my collar bone stabbed with a fish hook when i was like 4. I drowned when i was 3 and my step dad gave me cpr to save me. (Thats one of my first memories) I have had a rough life to say the least. But today i have a purpose. Today i Know who i am. I am clean from all the dope for over a year now. I just smoke every know and then. I have an IQ of 137 and a heart that truly cares about everyone. I know how dark and depressing life can be and the depths of pain in it. I wanna do everything i possibly can to ensure others dont have to feel thr level of hopelessness ive endured for more than half my life. This is why i truly want to open affordable housing apartment complexs/homeless housing and build communities based off the sole purpose of helping others and then one day if everything works out I want to run for president and truly help this country how i know the amazing people here can.

For me, getting out of depression (I was diagnosed with 18 but i think i had for a long time, at least in a mild form) was tough but simple. Surround yourself with whatever meaningful things you can (family, friends, charity, etc). When you find yourself enjoying little things in life, remember it. Save those memories for a rainy day. And also pray. Pray a lot. Even if you don’t believe (I didn’t) praying the rosary helps immensely. And accept its a long process to climb out of the pit. That’s my experience.

@The Factory Rat Genius Socrates knew many of the answers and was hoping to find them in the prodding of his students and the youth without prompting. The Factory Rat Genius Socrates questioned the system that was currently educating the youth, and was then accused of corrupting the youth by pushing that same questioning on them. Peterson is contesting an establishment that claims to have all the answers and distributes them en mass as fact. So no, Peterson is closer to Socrates in this metaphor. Though I don’t think Socrates claimed to answer the questions he proposed in most cases, he mostly just attempted to tear down the indoctrination process of “fact” being spread around by the cultural rulers of Athens at the time. He was known to specifically seek out those who were leading figures and tear them down with his jester like questioning. He was attacking a system and group, who collectively claimed he was corrupting the youth after the fact. Peterson attacks a system and group, and they collectively respond by focusing on his character.

its not his quest. his quest is money and for a lot of people to think he's smart, and good, and daddy. this man, btw, makes $60,000 a month from his fans alone. thats before lecture fees, shirt sales, book sales etc. thats not altruistic. and if you talk to a true scholar of any of the material he makes it impossible for his fans to ever truly experience, they will tell you how fundamentally off base he is. he is essentially ruining a generation of (mostly) men's chances to become transformed through learning - because he's cramming his read of this material and reiterating it, reiterating it, as though there is some big truth and he knows it. you would know this too if you would have read any of this stuff before hearing him. (thats not a criticism btw- the books are hard, finding time to read is hard, and its not easy to just... pick these up and read them if they fall out of context in a person's life) I'm sure now every time any of his fans do read these books at his recommendation , they will read them in a way that they imagine their hero would want them to. they won't have a relationship with the writing, they won't have genuine aha moments, they won't even spot his glaring misinterpretations. He is warping people's minds by posturing as a genius and poorly plagiarizing victorian thinkers, and lying about the material he sights, and by doing so he is quite literally destroying people's ability to learn. Tim McDraw He’s still telling them to read good books, and he tells them his interpretation of them, which you can choose whether or not to agree with. The Bible was not inspired by religions before it. It was inspired by God Himself and written down by men. It is like no other religious book. It is a living book, one that's endured no matter how many people have tried to destroy it. The Bible is also unique in that it matches with chronological history. It talks about real events that happened in history. The Quran doesn't, none of the eastern religions do, and none of polytheistic religions of Greece, Egypt, or the Romans do.

For me, I was unaware of it. At around age 20-24, I had this out of body experience where I first used words to think (before that I ignored any thought of concious or self critical thought, in all honesty it was heaven on earth,,, for a while). It was the first time I went within myself and allowed myself to think. From then I have not stopped, and I have simultaneously been dealing with mental health issues which may have been caused by this introspective appifany, if I can call it that. But what happened was exactly the same as Dr. Peterson describes, 95% of who I thought I was, who I portrayed, what I said, was either a lie or mimickery or taught and copied by family, society and other things..... The 5% that was me was the life experience that I had up until that point which was out of my control and not fabricated in some sort of way. It was this experience that allowed me to delve into the depths of being and realise truth above all else matters, I figured out if I thought God existed or not and other existential questions, and life questions and I am now at a point where within me I am whole, I am truthful to a satisfactory level, before it was 5% and now it is above 70%. I can now fail at implementing who I am inside into the outside world through action an infinite amount of times without giving up, as the truth dictates it. On the outside I come across as weak but I am insanely strong on the inside, ironically before the age of twenty I was seen as strong but I was incredibly fragile and weak on the inside.

Dr. Peterson- I have watched many hours of lectures, many hours of your interviews and all of the podcasts with you on Joe Rogan, read 12 steps to life. What I would like to say first is that my family and I are thrilled to see you be so successful and continue to share your knowledge and gift of wisdom with a world that has needed it so desperately. I would also like to state an observation that I believe to have noticed: Through out the years of your lectures and speaking appearances, I believe to have noticed a correlation between the improvements in your daughters health and your overall character and appearance. (I will assume that part of that is your change in diet) My point is that in the same way that your “heart is warmed” by the stories of success and overcoming of life’s chaos, the same feeling is felt by myself and many others when we learn the news of the escape from tragedy and suffering that you and your family have accomplished. I was really blown away when I watched the podcast with Joe Rogan and your awesome, interesting, BEAUTIFUL, and highly intelligent daughter. To see her looking so healthy and to hear her speak about what she and your whole family went through and to add to the amazing story was to realize that during that time of suffering you selflessly continued to strive forward with your career and spreading the truth knowledge for the betterment of society. WOW! You not only preached it, you demonstrated it 100% man!!! I really hope that by some miracle I will one day get to shake your hand and tell you personally how grateful my friends and family are that you are alive and doing what you do. I believe that your message, your knowledge and compassion are the most amazing contributions to the world and genuinely saved my life and my relationship with my family, especially my 2 boys. Please consider making another trip to Oregon or somewhere relatively close to Oregon. I understand that you are busy, and if you actually get a chance to read this, then GREAT! Brando he makes it more complicated, because it is more complicated. His ideas are a the most coherent synthesis between atheistic materialism and religion. In many of his talks (and his books) he makes the distinction between objective scientific knowledge, and the more poetic, behavioral nature of mythology. This is why he’s controversial. He’s saying there is truth embedded in religious ideas, which annoys materialists to no end. But he also never claims that those truths are objective or scientific, which annoy believers to no end. But there is still deep truth to it. This is a third way. Neither theistic nor atheistic.

@@brando3342 - Yes, you're right. This is not the place to go for the direct gospel. But he's speaking in general to intellectuals and philosophers. Before I joined team Jesus, I was very enamored with philosophy and loved to reason everything out -- to death lol. Plus, I'm a book editor and love to use an expansive vocabulary. He's not claiming to be the way to finding Jesus. I think this might help some agnostics to reason on the side of God as opposed to no god. But we don't need to worry about whether his speeches will help non-believers believe, because the ones looking for the truth and asking, will find it, regardless. :)

Brando that's not even remotely easy for someone who isn't religious, so I'm not sure how that would help people "find the door" at all really. In contrast, JP is able to talk about religion in ways that make it much easier for non-religious people to understand and even respect, people that would otherwise curse religion.
@rangerPooMaster
@rangerPooMaster 5 лет назад
Brando I was raised in a deeply Christian evangelical household. I spoke in tongues, I had conversations with “God” in my head every day. I’ve been baptized. I’ve read multiple versions of the bible through on several occasions. I’ve “let Jesus in”, as you put it. As a child, I would prophesy and have dreams and visions (none of which came true, by the way). I know exactly what it feels like to have that deep certainty that your version of things is correct. Deep in your heart. Like walking away from a test you studied for, knowing you got an A. ...Only to be devastated the next week when you get your grade back and see all the questions you missed. I have to ask the question: which version of Jesus do you want us to let in? The Baptist version? The Catholic? The Eastern Orthodox version? The Lutheran version? The Nondenominational American version, who has attributes that still contradict the other versions? This is the problem with the certainty you profess. JP mentions Socrates. He was said to be the wisest man in the world not because he was certain, but because he admitted how little of the world he knew. “Whoever humbles himself like this little child...” Jordan Peterson’s notions of God are far more subtle, and quite frankly, realistic, than the more ideologically grounded versions of people with devout religious faith. The Jesus you’re asking me to invite in is not the same he discusses. In his talk he reveals a great humility and a reluctance to make such bold claims as everyday religious people (and everyday atheists). He also bases his ideas deeply in evolutionary biology. He’s not claiming the same thing as a creator God. God is more of a transcendent reality that we can align ourselves with. JP frequently mentions Taoism. Mysterious, not well understood. Where the questions are more important than the answers. Again. It isn’t theism. This version of God is far more subtle. But still very real. It’s not atheism either.

Wow I stopped dreaming after leaving home about a year and half ago. I'm 49 and Bipolar and have an amazing Christian wife and 4 children but I've been the misfit in this wonderful family. My mind is lost. I was ministering and founded s nonprofit Christian organization that now houses 32 men and women in my home town. I lost it all and now I understand why I'm so lost now and no longer dream. I want to find my life again but about to give up

It really is interesting to think that being deprived of dreams while we sleep (which appear silly, bizarre, and don't seem to have any tangible value) can have actual negative consequences on our minds.

It is interesting if you read Proverbs 31 and when you read the book of Ecclesiastes Solomon is suffering the consequences of foreign wives. Proverbs 21:9. If you listen to the last 15 minutes he talks about his relationship with his wife comparable to God and the concept of "contending" in relation to both. Think about how that ties into how Solomon interacted with his wives.

I really appreciate Jordan’s candor and sincerity. I think that to understand Christianity intellectually is one thing and to live it is entirely another. To say that I am a believer in God, for me, is not to be an arrogant know-it-all…annoyingly emphatic about something I’m not supposed to know for sure. It’s a matter of experience. It’s not a question of my own worthiness because God doesn’t commune with people based upon their qualifications but upon their attitude, whether it is one of humility and dependency rather than, say, one of pride. I have seen God orchestrate my life and provide for me based upon my requests and supplications. He has met my deepest needs in darkest moments. He has sent human heroes to my rescue in the exact moments when no one could have known my needs. I should and could write a book on the faithfulness of God. He is faithful to me even though I may wander. His kindness is what draws me. His goodness shines! The question of God, for me, is absolutely unquestionable.

I looked up the poem of Marx in German (Invocation of one in dispair - Des Verzweiflenden Gebet) and just like the title, the translation of the poem takes a lot of freedom. I know it is incredibly difficult to translate a poem but still, I think the English version is not really doing the original justice. I am not a Marxist and I am not sure if I entirely understand what Marx tried to say with this poem in either language but I think it is important to note that there are some things lost in translation here.

Jordan Peterson pours his heart and soul into his presentations, and I love what he has to teach. Being honest, working as hard as you can, taking responsibility for your actions, being trustworthy, valuing people, valuing your own worth, living by Biblical principals. Teach your children to live by these values and you will equip them to live a good life.

My favourite Biblical principle is Thou shalt not kill. It is ironic considering how many people the Church, in particular the Catholic church has killed over the centuries. Jesus loves you unless you are a heretic!
@bartstewart6106
@bartstewart6106 4 года назад
No. God's love is eternal and, therefore, so is Jesus's. There are NO CONDITIONS! If a person rejects His teachings and turns his back on Him, it doesn't change the fact that God loves ALL His children. When I was forced to punish my children, I didn't cease to love them. Actually, I loved them even more. It hurt me to punish them. I did it because I loved them and wanted them to be the best person they could be. People become separated from God because WE choose to.
