LED Billiards Light VS Predator Arena Light - Watch this before you spend the money! Man I've been saying it for a while now. We spend so much money on this sport we love. But I really believe things are getting out of hand. Case in point the Predator Arena Light. It costs how much!?
This video outlines the LED I purchased and all the advantages it offers. I also compare it to the Predator and discuss "Value Added"

Perimeter lights are very nice. Had them at the tournament. Definitely want one but I would not go predator. Perimeter billiard light has them for $470 usd or the dimmable version for $550 usd. Never thought I would spend big money on chalk until I saw the cleanliness of the Taom chalk. Less skids and clean hands. Some things I will pay for. Especially since I only need to buy it once every 6 months to a year. I still use master chalk on my phenolic tips, ie jump cue and break cue. Just wanted to let you know about that cheaper perimeter light

I am contemplating designing and building a predator type light out of wood, wire hangers and led strips and am confident I can build it for $200 -$300 dollars

You should totally do it. Predator is crazy with their prices. But facts are facts. People are buying them so why would they change it? Good luck with the build

This video confirmed I’m going to move ahead with my plan. I’m going to do something similar, but build a wood frame and mount to ceiling. My ceilings aren’t high enough I need to hang it down. I’ve got an 8’ table so I think I will do 3 of the 2x2 panels.

Yeah that'll do it. I think there's a few videos on RU-vid where people built their own housing for their LEDs. I'm excited for you👍

I think having the light about the same size as the table will make a big difference. There's a noticeable difference in lighting between the center of the table and the edges. I know the price of the Arena Light is insane, but I've searched the internet for days... Then I got it out of my mind, because it was too expensive. Then a few months later I searched again and I couldn't find anything like it. So in the end I made the decision and ordered it, because I really wanted something exactly like it. In my searches, the closest one was a light that someone posted on a billiards forum somewhere, someone was making somewhat like a copy of the Arena Light (and selling it for $700, something like that), BUT without a remote and without the possibility to control the color temperature and the intensity of the light.

@HereAfterBilliards Год назад
Interesting. Well if you have the money and want to pull the trigger it's your decision. Congrats on the purchase! I've got a second LED that I ordered for my table in my closet but I just think it would have been too much. Still the difference in light at the edges really can't be seen with the naked eye so I'm really happy with my set up. Good luck with your light👍

@@HereAfterBilliards yeah, from the gopro at the top can't be seen with the naked eye. But on the other camera, which is probably not "low light friendly". It doesn't do it justice. I don't know if you're streaming, but as a viewer, if I'd watch a pool game, I'd like to watch it from a different point of view, not from the top. I think I would rather invest in a mirrorless camera. Also gopros overheat and turn off very often (had hero 10, but I heard hero 11 is the same). Sure, if I'd record 1080p it wouldn't turn off. But I wouldn't record a pool game in anything less than 4k 60fps. I think nowadays 4k has to be the minimum. As for fps, I think it's needed for pool action. I'm curious what resolution & fps you're recording with the gopro. Because, for me, the gopro was very frustrating, always kept turning off every 10-15 minutes

@@MStoica Well so here's my journey. I have the GoPro Hero 4 Silver and bought that when it came out...so it's ancient. I recently borrowed the Hero 8 from a friend...to try it out. Yes the camera specs obviously got better with the 4k and the fps you could potentially shoot but I'm surprised at the amount of noise considering how illuminated the table is. I find I always have to de-noise the footage before rendering. I'm not impressed and ended up returning the go Pro to my friend. I've decided to go in another direction. I recently bought the Insta360 X3 and am experimenting with that camera. I'm working through how I want to expose and where I want to position the camera. It's a journey for sure. As for streaming I've almost got my set up together and will start experimenting this year. I've got my A7iii for a main camera and a smaller a5100 for a side view. I won't start streaming until I replace my rails and cloth on the table though👍😀

I have not seen the Predator lights in person, however, with the center being hollow instead of solid, like yours, I can see it being REALLY good for a tv camera in the center. Besides that, I dont see the need over your light. Nice lightt!

I've had the opportunity to play on a table with the predator lights. Very good. As for value added (great point), it depends on your personal finances, your obsession with the sport, and goals. Now as far as your light, very acceptable for a 7 footer/Bar Box, but for a 9x4.5 footer guessing it won't be as acceptable for at least me (if I had a house and a home training table). I'm truly glad you found a compromise that works for you and your table. Would like you to do a follow up adding the distance of a full size table (like on a card table to extend) to see how much light it would give for that....
@HereAfterBilliards
@HereAfterBilliards Год назад
One thing I don't mention in the video is that I bought 2 light panels off of my friend. He thought I was crazy and once I had both panels hooked up I saw why. 😂 It was way too much light for my 7 foot. Having two of those panels would be more than sufficient for a 9 foot table. I'm probably going to throw that extra panel in my garage once it's dry walled next spring😁. As for finances, I get that. I think the lowest common denominator is that it's a luxury to have perfect and consistent illumination. I'm just not sure what it really does for a person's game. Considering the price, I equate it to buying a 4000 dollar cue with insane inlay work. How does it improve your game. I think it only improves one's ego😂. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@HereAfterBilliards on the Cue. Cues like that can be a Talisman. Similar to a lucky color. The most important part of the Cue is the tip, then vault plate/ferrel, shaft, joint, forearm, grip area, butt cap, extension in that order imo. The beautiful custom inlays and such are more a feeling of personal expression. This is my opinion and take. Think you make great points on value vs the 2. And in the end, as long as what we have doesn't break the bank and brings us happiness, we're doing something right...

That is a great looking setup! I see the value in what you got. Not the over $1000 one. On Amazon for the USA your light is $78.75 and the mounting kit is $35.99. For chalk I use Master and a box of 12 costs $7.94. I bought a box over 2 years ago and have 2 for my table - I shoot 10 - 20 racks a day plus some drills, 2 in my bag and 8 still untouched. What's a miscue?
@HereAfterBilliards
@HereAfterBilliards Год назад
Hey Larry. Wow that's cheap! It's a great light. Anything bigger than a 7 foot I'd get 2 though. A miscue is when your tip fails to adhere to the cue ball when hitting and the cue ball in turn hops or goes in a direction that's undesired. That's the best way I can think of to describe a miscue. We've all done it. It happens when we don't chalk correctly or the life of our tip is coming to an end.

how do you think it would light a 9 footer?
@HereAfterBilliards
@HereAfterBilliards Год назад
I would go with two on a 9 footer. I actually bought 2 for my table and my friend laughed and said that's way too much light. He was right. Now I'll take that second light and install it in my garage after I dry wall it. If two give off too much for your 9 foot you can turn down the intensity 👍👍

@hardtimesbbq5265 Год назад
Totally fair to say you don’t wanna spend the money for more light, but your lighting has a major problem with the feet ends of the table being dimmer. The ends of the table is where all bad lighting fails and this is where the most important shots of the game take place that’s where you need lighting to be at its best! Definitely do not have to buy an expensive name brand predator light, but maybe get two of those lights. They are so cheap that might solve your problem. But you can’t pretend uneven and low lighting is not a problem. That’s a 7’ table and that light is limping along to cover the whole thing.
@HereAfterBilliards
@HereAfterBilliards Год назад
I wouldn't say the light is limping. It's night and day to what I had before. Its more than enough for the majority of the table. Ironically I did buy two of these lights but after lighting it with one I felt that two would leak out too far into the surrounding area. I like it dark surrounding the table. I just hung the second panel in my garage😂 Now I have to buy another panel for the other light because half of my garage is lit perfectly and the other half looks dark
