Background and example of a low energy germination solution for cacti and other succulent plants. It is based upon the usage of warm white led lamps, considering the effect of the light spectrum on both germination and growth. Theory and practice are in line. Young seedlings look healthy with a good spination. With only a few Watt electricity you can have your germination space all year around.

Saving. No idea what to do with this info in the immediate, but this will come in handy my setup gets more advanced. I have haworthia/gasteria that I would like to grow indoors.

I like the video very much. But dont you need to consider light losses due to plastic coverage of the boxes?

Hi Tibor. They will indeed give some losses, but i do not expect it to be more than 10%. It is very thin plastic. The temperature inside the closed boxes is only up to 2 degrees Celsius more than outside (from measurements)

Does it have to be LED or can it just be a lamp or would that not worK??

The 'old' lamps will work as well, but they use much more energy and the give a lot of warmth, so they can not be to close to where you want the light. So you would need even more wattage as you can not concentrate the light at the right spot

Where did you get that tray, and lighting system?

The tray is not used, you can use any container. The lightning system is from Ikea (but every spot will do). The led bulbs are just from a dollar shop. So nothing special

Why would you multiply a regular luxmeter ratings with 10? The truth is that lamp spectrum spreads on much wider area than 0,1x0,1m (120 degrees spherical, approximately) so the luxmeter measurements are as expected.

Hi Miroslav. Maybe it was not clear from the video, but the digits on this luxmeter have to be multiplied by the scale that is chosen on the lux meter

DRCEVNL Dear sir, I am a lighting engineer. Luxmeter ratings seem normal for the conditions without multiplication.

Dear Miroslav. There is a misunderstanding. and i am sorry i did not explain this in a good way. My Luxmeter must be put with a switch in the appropriate scale for the given situation like: 10 100 1000. The value on the screen (the measurement) has to be multiplied by the scale selected. This is because the display only allows for a certain number of digits and the light measurement can range from 1- 1000.000 (much more numbers)

Can seeds germinate under blue/red LED lights?

If these lights contain the right frequencies to trigger. You would need to compare the graph in the video with the graph of these lamps. Easier and cheaper to use just the common warm light led lamps of around 2700 Kelvin
