512x PL9823 LEDs were used to make the 8x8x8 LED RGB Cube. It consists of 8 identical segments with 8x8 LEDs. Steel wires were soldered to the LEDs for the power and data connections. The base is made of black acrylic glass. All electronic components including the power supply are located inside the base. The controller is a Wemos D1 Mini Pro Board (ESP8266 based) programmed with the ESPixelStick Firmware 4.0. A level shifter 74HCT125 is used between the controller and the first PL9823 LED. The animations were made with xLights.
Key features:
- 512x PL9823 LEDs (5mm diameter)
- same data transfer protocol as WS2812 LEDs
- LED pitch 30mm
- Steel wire ~40m (0.5mm diamter, horizontal connections)
- Steel wire ~13m (0.6mm diamter, vertical connections)
- base dimensions 300x300x63mm
- base material black acrylic glass 3mm
- Controller Wemos D1 Mini Pro with ESPixelStick Firmware
- SD card slot to save animations created in xLights

Can you use an Arduino UNO to program the lights? if so where could i find code?

I would not recommend using a Arduino Uno for driving so many LEDs of this type. This controller is much less powerfull. My code cannot be used with this controller.

Nice! Arduino is a great controller with many open source projects.

hi yotudero Congratulations on your awesome cube and your wonderful work. I'm thinking of making one like it but before starting I would like to have everything very clear. As for the hardware, I don't think I have many problems, but the software is something else. I have downloaded the xLights software and I don't know how to get started. Could you share your model and some of your sequences so I can have some help? Thanks in advance and greetings MrKrisstto

Thank you! I will try to share my xLights model and sequences in the near future. I am using xLights because it is possible to make animations without the need of writing a code. The downside is that xLights is optimized for 2d models but not for 3d models like the LED cube.

@@yotudero Thanks for answering. I have already ordered the leds and some more materials, when they arrive I will start my cube according to your instructions. Can I continue consulting with you all my doubts? One of them is that I see that you use an Arduino for the tests of the soldered LEDs, can you share the file and you use it because it is easier to program? Greetings and thanks.

@@jesussayago5156 Yes, you can ask more questions. In the Arduino IDE you can install the Adafruit Neopixel Library. You can search for it in the Library Manager. After installation there are a few sample files for example "strandtest".

That's awesome! I finished my 8x8x8 LED Cube this week after 1 and a half month. It tooks me lot of time to solder the leds. I cannot imagine how much work and afford it must be to make a rgb cube. Currently i am programming my own animations like the ripple effect. How do you do your animations?

Congratulations on your finished LED Cube! Yes, the soldering is really time consuming. I made the animations with xLights. Using this program is much easier than writing a code.

lots of hardwork .i can see that .i have a question .where can i find that colour animation code?

Hi! There is no code (for example Arduino code) that can be programmed in a controller. The animations were made with xLights. First I created a custom model xLights. Then I made the animation sequence file (fseq). This file can be saved on a sd-card and played back with a compatible controller (in my case a Wemos D1 Mini Pro). There is no need to write a "real" code for these simple animations.

What's the power supply used and do you know how much current each bulb draws?
@yotudero

Hi, I am using a Meanwell UHP-200-5 (5V/40A) as the power supply. Each LED draws 0.3W. You can have a look at my other LED Cube video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wKtEOfoG2CA.html
