This performance is the first time Page played his storied Les Paul onstage with Zeppelin. The guitar was either given or sold to Page by his friend Joe Walsh, the two guitarists have told 'both versions' of that story for decades. The Gibson that Walsh scored Jimmy replaced his main ax, the equally fabled Telecaster from his Yardbirds days. The Zeppelin had been gigging eight months when this changeover took place, Page had told Walsh the Tele wasn't cutting it and asked Walsh to find him a Les Paul. Listeners can tell the differences between the Fender and Gibson tone by listening to As Long As I Have You from the three shows before this one, especially early in the tune when Page is raking through chords before the rest of the band joins in.
I believe this is the first show Page used a Les Paul for. It's possible that it appeared in the first Winterland show two days earlier, but I doubt it. The previous night in Winterland is a complete recording, and it sounds like the telecaster throughout. This is a very creative version of this early staple, no doubt due to Page being inspired by the wider variety of guitar tones that the Les Paul offers (you almost never hear anything besides the bridge pickup on the Telecaster)
Exactly the cover of the 2LP set I bought back in 1986 at Second Coming Records in Cambridge MA. Fantastic recoding that should have been the bonus disc of the Zep 1 remaster of 2014.
…maybe we ran into each other there. I’m from Arlington and would at least once a wk. head to SCR…beneath the Dolphin Seafood Restaurant on Mass. Ave., Cambridge. I’ve still got all the vinyl I bought there - which is mainly Zeppelin. I grabbed a three record Deep Purple colored vinyl set from Dortmund, Ger. 1985. Perfect Strangers it’s aptly titled. But yeah, I’ve got this Fillmore record set in the red jacket! I’d turntable the records once and record em to a Maxell XLII cassettes (and no high speed dubbing!) remember that from back in the day? Too bad it’s got a 1975 picture from Earls Court on the cover. What were they thinking? Kids today would have zero idea of the fun we had back in the middle eighties! I think Bill Graham was responsible for recording this and the 24th too.
We may have crossed paths back in the day! Loved going to SCR and coming back with treasures. I also have Zurich 80 triple lp set as well. The only vinyl I have left😢. Great times there and I could spend all day looking at boots!
@@pc7135…I grabbed that Zurich three record set too. Beautiful gatefold and pic of Jim with the Lake Placid Blue ‘60 Strat from that concert! I’ve still got my two milk crates of vinyl still from those days. I spent a good amount of money down in that little store!
There’s my LP. I got it around 1981 this is one of there best shows they have arrived and were becoming the kings of the hill , awesome there’ll never be another time like 69 the amount of great music , it’s sad we won’t see it again Rock On 🤘 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸
Im glad they practiced up after this. Seems a little thrown together. A few good sounds around 5:40. Might have just been a bad night. Thank you for posting!
It WAS thrown together. At this point they had only been playing together 9 months ‼️‼️‼️ Played first album jamming, couple of Yardbirds tunes and others like this to extend the shows that the audience was screaming for ‼️‼️ You must be young, gotta lot to learn about Zeppelin ‼️‼️
