In fact, it's quite ordinary for its time. Every rock band back then recorded live the "naked" song and afterwards made overdubs

@@JulioLeonFandinho True, but these many of these musicians were either trained in the old school way of recitals/sight reading and along with the expectation of being table o get the track right the first or second time because of studio costs.

@@chopperdeath I don't think any of those guys could read music, if they were able to record quick and precise was because they played, a lot, they played in rehearsals and in gigs, thousands of hours literally... there are no miracles here, only hard work. The majority of bands that had success back in the day were stakhanovites, Hendrix slept with his guitar, woke up and started to play, the guys from Aerosmith went to live to the same apartment to stay together all the time and play non-stop... I mean, it wasn't rock and roll lifestyle all the time, that's probably the lesser time compared to playing music, wether in rehearsals, a gig or recording in a studio

Bonzo aka John Bonham is one of the greatest groove drummers to date. It's one thing to say , yeah I could play this beat, it's another to say yeah I could create this beat. Good luck. Lot of iconic drummers past and present, but Bonham is upper tier just for the simple fact that A. he was hugely talented and B. He created so many iconic drum beats. I still hear things that just wow me, saying did I just hear that? Did he just do that? Great drummer, and he played a kit with a huge bass drum and large toms, give it that louder fat sound. King of the triplets for sure.

Led Zeppelin definitely was an improvisational band, and many times did not do more than a couple takes on recordings, preferring to leave things as is. Some songs were exceptions of course. The improv aspect was full on at live shows where they could be soaring or crashing, sometimes both within the span of one song.

This song is a re-working of Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed by Blind Willie Johnson. It is a hard groove and a bit of a tour de force by the band. Please don't forget bassist John Paul Jones adding that meaty punch throughout. The end was improvised; vocalist Robert Plant wasn't sure how he wanted to end the song, so there is a pause, then drummer John Bonham coughs, to which Robert replies with "cough". Then you hear Bonham's voice say "That's got to be the one, hasn't it?" meaning that was going to be the best take of the song to use. Then you can hear the engineer in the booth say "Come have a listen, then" and Bonham reply "Oh yes, thank you". Producer Jimmy Page often liked to leave little "mistakes" in place so the listener could feel like they were there in studio while the band recorded. If you want to see an amazing live performance of this, here's a YT link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xTrQ7vUZsIo.html

This is still my reaction after every time I hear it too. I think this might be the only piece of music that actually makes me sweat listening through it. I think from playing in bands, I’m just barely experienced enough to dream of getting myself into this jam, and yet experienced enough to know that I’d live up to about .1% of the skill & talent working together to pull this off here and if I had a hundred years I’d still never have the musical creativity to take this everywhere they take it and hold it all together.

I just made my comment below but now i heard you talking about imagining the studio recording of the song. I have said on other channels that--I'm serious, now, real talk, lol!--I would gladly give 1% of whatever my future income might be if I could have a decent-quality video of this song being recorded. This take. And you're right--it WAS recorded live, which is why at the end you hear their small talk "That's gonna be the one, isn't it?" "Come over and listen then." "Oh yes, thank you." In my head I always work up a pretty good little music video for it, but, I just think it must have been ELECTRICITY itself for the band members, knowing they were killing it AS they were killing it. I swear, man, if I could just hear AND SEE it, lol!

So you just listened to Zep's "In My Time of Dying" and say you found it to be: Haunting, and it gave you chills, it was a "moving experience," even a bit scary and almost made you teary-eyed. If you look at the lyrics, this appears to be a very spiritual song of someone realizing that it’s their time to die doesn’t want anyone to mourn, and just wants heaven to give him a chance For any wrongdoing, he may have done to still make it to heaven. The lyrics are amazing. That Aside. Yes, the marriage between the guitar and the drums and Roberts vocals is extraordinary.

Led Zeppelin was: Robert Plant (vocals) Jimmy Page (guitar) John Paul Jones (Bass and keyboards) the late, great John Bonham (drums) Three songs in the Led Zeppelin catalog, illustrate why John Bonham was one of the greatest rock and roll drummers ever: 1) This song 2) Black Dog 3) Fool in the Rain This song, while relatively obscure in the Led Zeppelin catalog, is one of my all-time favorites. When I was in college, I used to put this song on,, turn it up, and play the "air drums." The thing Robert Plant was saying near the end was "Oh my Jesus" and later "I'll Touch Jesus." I've loved this song for years, but for the past 5-1/2 years I've worked as a hospice nurse and I've recently really appreciated the lyrics from that perspective. What a wonderful analysis there at the end. I can tell you really get it. I'm a musician of many decades and I haven't heard this in such a long time. In fact I think I've heard the Bob Dylan version more recently than I've heard the Led Zeppelin version. But yeah fucking Bonzo on those drums man, he was a force of nature, just beyond belief. But don't ever forget the importance of John Paul Jones in there man, he's either playing bass or keyboards most of the time and sometimes both at once. But he's really the glue that holds it together and then everybody is just so phenomenal. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant rounded out and they were just so tight and so hard and so talented and had such a great sense of humor. But most of all, they knew how to absolutely rock.

Probably the hardest song I've ever learned the drum to. Bonzo is beast.

I like those vids of drummers keeping up with Bonzo (trying to? lol) in various songs like this and "Achilles." Fun and instructive on how unreal his talent was!

We used to play this song in a cover I played guitar in. Fun slide guitar work. I had to sing as well. It took a lot of practice.
