Along with Achilles Last Stand, In My Time of Dying is John Bonham’s magnum opus. This song was actually recorded live in the studio, and that cough at the end was by Bonham. If you listen closely to the recording, shortly after that, Plant says, “cough,” which is followed by Bonham saying, “That’s gonna be the one, isn’t it?” In other words: Bonham was saying to the rest of the band, that’s going to be the version that will be used on the album, and he was right. He knew that they nailed it with that particular take.

@helenespaulding7562

It’s a blues song….so that first slow part is no “intro”, it’s the blues part of the song….then they kick it into massive blues/gospel/rock. This is the remastered version where the drums were brought really forward in the mix ….more than any other song I think except perhaps Levee. Jimmy’s slide playing is superb. And it’s really cool to watch him do it live. Most band would have kept that banter off the record but Jimmy decided to leave it in, as The Beatles sometimes did, just to give a little peak behind the curtain as it were. So glad the sound engineer kept the tape rolling.

You rightly noticed the drums in a big way. Good Lord, that's some sick pounding by Bonzo. But not just raw power--he had that "swing," as they say, that groove and funk to his fills. Endlessly creative. This must be the Zep song I've listened to the most. At least parts of it. I like the slow intro, and have given it my full, admiring attention countless times, but I admit I've skipped even more often to the "fast" or "hard/jamming" sections. Towards the end, the roughly one minute from "Oh my Jesus" to "Oh, Lord, take me home!" with Bonham's fluid little roll trailing after is the most re-listened to part of ANY Zeppelin song for me. For me, It's fucking perfect, and perfectly amazing. I don't see how the band could have made it any better, that minute. I keep coming back to it over and over. It's like I worship it, lol! As others have mentioned, the live version (there are two from about the same time; I would say the "Mohtership" one is slightly better.) is absolutely worth checking out if/when you ever have another "live Zeppelin interlude" between albums (or, hell, during, lol!) Plant's stage charisma during the "slow" beginning will have you m-m-m-m-mesmerized, Page's slide geetar is outrageous, you can see JPJ's fingers laying down a bad-ass bass line, and a decent amount of time is given to showing the fabled drummer doing his fabled stuff. Every true Zeppelin fan has that moment where they discover a "hidden gem" like this, and then just dive deeper and listen to the whole damn catalog, and with eyes growing wider and ears fuller (deafer?) , realize that you're enjoying the hell out of (some might say "almost") EVERY damn song they made!. The rest of Physical Graffiti, my favorite album, will show you this, though I think you know it already!

If you continue to listen to Zep once these reactions are done, this is a song that will grow on you like fungus, and is one of the fastest 11 minutes you can spend. It also has the distinction of being Zeppelin's longest song. Be sure to check out the live version from Earl's Court 1975: Incredible!! Coming up is IMHO one of the best album sides in Rock and Roll. All three of these songs are brilliant. Houses of the Holy is a poppy, happy gem that was obviously left over from the previous album, Trampled Under Foot is a keyboard driven romp comparing a girl to a guy's best friend (his car), and nothing need be said about Kashmir.
@charlesgervais4673
@charlesgervais4673 2 года назад
For me, this is one of Zeppelin's top 3 songs along with Kashmir and When the Levee Breaks. Yet on most lists of Zep's greatest songs, this one is never mentioned. Rolling Stone mag ranks it #30, stating "Zeppelin's longest studio track transmorgified a gospel standard into a stadium hydra..." Two words I would use to describe this song are Epic and Tight. I can't think of a better example of LZ playing so tight as a single unit. Most amazingly, the quirky ending was made up on the spot, the band was literally improvising and had not yet rehersed an ending to the song. After the cough, you can hear Bonham saying " That's gonna be the one, isn't it"? Sadly, on March 17, 2017, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave closed a concert in Detroit by performing a short section of this song. He was found dead (by suicide) hours later in his hotel room.
@ptxaholic
@ptxaholic 2 года назад
Oh I didn't know that about Chris having done this song before he died. That's kind of... morbid, yet weird, yet appropriate? I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, it's just the title of the song. He was another huge loss to the music world. I agree, though, this song is tight.

My wife liked to play musical snob to me, always telling me she knew what REAL musicianship was and I didn't. She knew what REAL blues are, and I didn't. Well... I played Rush's 2112 Overture/Temple of Syrinx and this song to show the difference between Neil Peart's technical prowess and John Bonham's mix of technicality and primal hurting of his drum set.... Then I played Zeppelin's Since I've Been Loving You and Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs for blues... She drank that cup of STFU right up.

@boki1693
@boki1693 2 года назад
Thats Jimmy playing slide guitar the entire song. But as you said Bonham's drums dominate. Please do the live version from Earl's Court. It's one of the best live versions recorded by them. And a lot of fun watching him play slide. Where this song ranks for them is a very tricky question. It NEVER got any air play. Mostly because of the slow start and length of the song. So it is very much a hidden gem because I suspect many Zep fans would often skip by it at first because of the slow start. I know I did for years. Also, it's one of those songs that will grow on you the more you hear it. Having said that, the Zep fans that are more than casual Zep fans tend to really like this song. To me there are three hidden gems by them. This song. "How many more times" from the first album and "Hots on for Nowhere" on Presence. "Hots on for No where" was the only one of the three that ever got serious air play, yet I never hear any one bring that song up as a great song. Maybe it's not and I just like it alot. LOL. Side 2. Houses of the Holy is a very good song but I think it's the second worst song on the first album just above Custard Pie. Trampled Underfoot I put right up there with Kashmir and In my time of Dying.
