This song was often the first song they played in a live concert, sort of a way to warm up the audience. If you want a slower song live, definitely consider 'The Rain Song' from the MSG concert. It's usually paired with 'The Song Remains The Same', and doing them together would be excellent! As for 'The Ocean', it is NOT a slow mellow song (but still great!). Back in the 70's, you're right, it was harder to see live concerts without actually going to the show, BUT in the case of Led Zeppelin, we did get to see this concert when the movie 'The Song Remains The Same' came out (uncertain of the year, but the soundtrack came out a couple years BEFORE the actual movie), which I eagerly went to see in a theater with my older sister immediately! Anyways, loving the reactions, keep it up!

This song was inspired by Little Richard's - Keep a Knockin. John Bonham started playing the intro during a recording session, Page began playing a suitable riff then with the help of the other band members plus the late Ian Stewart on piano they knocked it out in less than no time. So it may not be one of their best songs from the point of view of the lyrics but musically one of my favourites.

This was their best live performance, to me. Jimmy really let it all hang out even more in some of the other songs, like Stairway to Heaven and Dazed and Confused, especially the latter. The movie 'The Song Remains the Same' was awesome!

the biggest problem I have with led zepplin is that radio station's think they only have 5 songs so they play only them

The first concert Zep played in the U.S. was in my hometown of Denver, Colorado in 1968. I didn't see it (I was 14), but I did see them a few times after that. The music of my youth.

Check out their songs "The Battle of Evermore," "Thank You," "Friends," "Tangerine," "Gallow's Pole," "Going to California," "The Rain Song," "No Quarter," "In the Light," "Down by the Seaside," and "Tea for One."

Hi Rebeka, Loved your reaction to R&R I am fortunate to have attended Led Zeppelin Live twice. Once in "72" & again in "73" Words can not describe how Great their shows were.( I will leave it at that). I loved your comment about how lucky we are that they were captured "Live" on Video. How TRUE.. Can you imagine how bad it would suck if their shows were lost forever. Zep usually opened their shows with the "Immigrant Song". Until "73" Then they switched to opening with Rock & Roll. Unlike most Vocalists, Robert did not "Warm Up" his voice before he did a show. The first song was his "Warm Up". (Not the best way to treat your voice). Perhaps it may have contributed to some of his voice problems he has suffered from. Also, That's why sometimes you will hear his voice "Crack" during the first song of a show. I don't' know the exact details, but it is common knowledge Robert almost destroyed his voice by the late 70's. I believe he may have had surgery on his vocal chords at one point. Now he sings one key lower. Anyhow, you asked for a recommendation for a slower song to react to. So, I ask that you react to "That's the Way" from their You Tube - Live at Earls Court Show in 1975. I know how much you like Robert, This song will "Blow Your Socks Off" Your Truly, David T.

Absolutely "The Rain Song" from this concert is what you are looking for in a slower Zeppelin song. You will like it.

By the way, this live clip was from their movie, The Song Remains The Same.”. Definitely worth watching. Talk about fun to be there? Did you see things being thrown from the audience onto the stage? That was the young ladies throwing their panties on stage. LOL The air would have been so thick with pot smoke you could have cut it with a knife and a fairly high number would have been tripping on acid. Not to mention quite a few would have snuck in leather wine carafes filled with wine or spirits. They were definitely having a real good time! It would be nice to hear that spirit of Rock n Roll lives elsewhere in the world but it died here in the U.S.

I find it more than a little amazing that just as modern rock music broke on the scene there were incredibly talented bands like this and others that drove it to the stratosphere.

I saw them in 1977 in Greensboro, NC. This was their last tour of the states before Bonzo died. Epic show!

I have sent music to people in their early 30's, and they always respond that this seems kind of old, or that it was before their time. I think that it's great that you can appreciate music regardless of your age!

The best ones for me are: Since I've Been Loving You (slow blues), Stairway to Heaven (slow then fast), The Song Remains the Same (fast but amazing), Rain Song (slow), No Quarter (slow and eerie), Dazed and Confused (may personal favorite), and the finale Whole Lotta Love medly. I wanted to recommend the entire 26 minutes of Dazed and Confused from this concert. Prepare to be mind blown ! Must be viewed in it's entirety to catch the explosive guitar soloing towards the end. You may have to pause it a few times to get it to post.

Ah recommendation for a slow song. I would recommend Going to California. Soft, thoughtful and sweet. In my Time of Dying is another one and it’s a great song but it’s probably not what you’re looking for. If you really want to hear Robert Plants softer voice I would recommend listening to the Duets he did with the legendary American Folk Singer Allison Krause. You won’t be disappointed. It’s not Rock n Roll but you won’t be disappointed. It’s probably the only time Plant has worked with a vocalist more talented than he is.

The Ocean is definitely not a slow song. I would recommend an acoustic folk track on the 4th album titled Battle of Evermore. Robert does a duet with Sandy Denny of Fairport convention and the vocal harmonies are amazing. Sadly there’s no great live recording but the studio version is amazing.

Since I've Been Loving You is slow and bluesy or In The Light, Down By The Seaside, That's The Way, Tea For One are more examples.

The Ocean is a great song by them (aren't they all though?) but it's not a softer song. It rocks hard too. In the Light and Ten Years Gone are slower songs by them. Also, Tea for One, That's the Way and The Rain Song.

I saw Page in the Winter of 1966 at the Rochester War Memorial in Rochester, NY, when he was the sole guitarist in the Yardbirds, and he was a unique and outstanding musician then. But he only got better .... and I read that he is working on a new album currently at the age of 78!

You're right about it being not one of their very best songs but it's still a very good songs and the performance is magnificent. It's just full on rock and roll. Robert Plant was/is a massive Elvis Presley fan too, by the way.

I have been to quite a few concerts with some girlfriends I used to have, best concert to me was in the Dallas outdoor Auditorium with AC-DC, I snuck up to the stage to see Angus Young then was escorted by security to my seat to my angry girlfriend LOL!
