yeah, as a kind of music theory nerd and mediocre to sometimes pretty decent player myself i was listening to the actual chords the guitar is playing in the bridge and it's like what the fuck are those? they sound almost ridiculous without the bass and drums lol. they just pushed actual rock music (imho) to its limits like I think you're saying, making it actually progressive rock not progressive pop as in the pop genre, not popular music. ok that probably made no sense but yeah ,good stuff.

Not really. Page isn't the most technical of players and the influences are more modal jazz than prog rock. Even the Allman Brothers were doing more complex stuff at the same time, you guys are just confusing thick Thad Jones-esque jazz extensions for upper level theory.

What people should realize is that with Physical Graffiti the band was way past "rock and roll" as anybody knew it. The Wanton Song's cadence, the other songs on the record. were not exactly 3/4 time-every variance possible was done. The guitar work was NOT Chuck Berry-Physical Graffiti was promised and it delivered. It was a new music.

He was really developing as a guitarist, as this snippet proves, and it was all snatched away by the "Monkey on his back." Drugs really pounded him down hard, and he never quite recovered. It's sort of sad that between Plant's loss of range, and Page's loss of his ... brain, they turned into an Elvis act after this. No disrespect to Plant who gave it his all, and of course JPJ continuing to get better and better. And Bonham was just Bonham all the time.

This is a great example of how clean Page's guitar tones actually were.. Most players would cover this tune using much more distortion when, in fact, it "feels" heavy because of Page's high-mid tone and aggression.. Then, with the addition of John Bonham's full-bore approach on drums and distance mics on the room, you feel and hear the impact on the recording space..

Wanton song was a good track on the album but never one of my favorite Zep tracks. I had heard that it was a great song live which was interesting, then I Saw Page and Plant live in around '98-99 at wembley arena. I expected a good show but nothing like their prime but I was absolutely blown away. All the classics apart from stairway including a version of how many more times which was incredible. But the highlight was Wanton Song. The incredible sounds Page produced were really unlike anything ever heard from a guitar before. Ive never heard a recording that could really capture what he could do but you get a small taste test from this initial rehearsal take. it's kinda frustrating not being able to find anything recorded that comes close enough to that live performance.

I love them all testing the waters of what was to be eventual arrangement. A shame they never played it live. The raw, stripped down feel of all Zeppelin's stuff (ask anyone who's witnessed them live) compared to the lush sounding and lavishly overdubbed recordings is testimony to Page's ability as a producer. par excellance. By necessity they were two different bands and I love them both.

@@zjah1 If you could investigate it, then listen to this one: At around 1979, John Kay, the lead singer of the band Steppenwolf, a legendary band, seen me at his show at the WHITING THEATER which is located in Whiting, Indiana. He walked right off of the stage, came up to me, and shook my hand. He actually did remember me from a party where he, Jimmy Page, and a bunch of girls were there. lol. I was living with my girlfriend at the time, Tina Ross, and she was around 7 months pregnant with our son. She looked like she was about ready to have our baby. Tina seen me shaking hands with John and her mouth dropped open and she said, "wow! You know HIM?" Like that! And then she gave me a huge smooch and called me a hero! LMAO. That was the 70's. I don't know if there's a way to retrieve that information, but Steppenwolf did perform at that tiny little Whiting, Indiana Theater which I thought was really strange because they were a very well known big named band. ha ha. If you could meet John Kay, he'd tell you who I am. It's funny. I tried to meet Ozzy, but he was actually one of the tougher ones to get near. Jimmy Page is very friendly and he welcomed it when fans talked to him.

Funk and the beginnings of Disco was all over the place around this time. So even through osmosis it had to affect Zeppelin, and I personally loved their groove, because they had swing. Don't forget that Bonham adored funk and R&B, and it's in his style. I consider myself blessed to have grown up in the sixties and seventies, when real talent was on display.

Its still crazy how this rehersal is a much better version of the album version of the song. I hated the effect pedal that he used on the album version.

Interesting to hear how Zep would go through the same process as other bands, local, garage etc... even your band or my band... just jamming out ideas, riffs etc. What they had was the ability to see it through into a great finished product that retained the feel of the jam but with just enough polish to make it shine. Personally I like Zep in a more live situation, just those guys playing without overdubs etc. For a long time now, bands are bringing in extra musicians people play parts from backstage etc, or pre recorded music etc. I think rock lost it's way with over production, digital drum machines, protool editing etc. A few properly placed mics in a good room with minimal editing puts the feel, vibe and responsibility back where it should be... on the band.

What Makes Led Zeppelin so special in the history of Rock & Roll is how unique they were from every different album. Really can you think of any other band that they borrowed from or copied on this song. they are unduly criticized for being plagiarists or borrowing and stealing ideas from other groups . That is total rubbish this band created music that will never be duplicated replicated or surpassed in the entire music pantheon. I am so fortunate to have been able to see this band perform live back in their glory days. In my opinion they will always be the greatest HARD ROCK band that ever existed.
@stickman1742
@stickman1742 2 года назад
Exactly. They get ridiculously attacked as a cover band because they borrowed some old blues lyrics. They created more original rock music than any other rock band by far, especially Page.
@allancerf9038

peter hlinka they played the main riff here and there as well as levee breaks - here and there. i agree it's strange they didn't play a full version of it. for the dude below that says this isn't standard rock and roll - well true. it's a bit of an understatement the bridge chords as well as the 'solo' section are harmonically a million miles from berry style - or any standard rock music.

love the out of phase tone on the les paul. So much a part of Jimmy's sound and a must if you really want to nail his style and articualtion. Punchy, not really distorted compared to todays standards. Actually quite clean tone from the old marshall plexi's .
@danvitco771
@danvitco771 3 года назад
True. The only distortion is from a plexi cranked just enough. Raw, energetic, organic....which describes the chemistry of the whole band.
