Lee Kuan Yew, former prime minister of Singapore, comments on the challenge of combating terrorism, the impact of the Iraq War, the growth of China, and the relaxing of regulations in Singapore.
Stupid Charlie was given the opportunity to talk to perhaps the greatest political figure of the century. Instead of listening, he is too busy trying to help a man who posses twice his IQ complete sentences and thoughts when he clearly doesn’t need it. An absolute moron
Hearing LKY is extraordinary, he is very careful with his words, at the same time he is very sensible, down to earth, no place for ego, very simple clear thinking. The gentleman is a pleasure to hear, no nonsense
The interview content would be much more informative if the host disrupted less. When you talk to LKY, the best thing you do is just listen to what he has to say. Making statements in front of him can only make the questioner look stupid.
The late President Lee Kuan Yew was a remarkable man, well educated and did everything he could for his citizens in particular the poor; unlike the leaders in the developed World who put their party first and NOT the interest of the country and its people! The housing policy that he implemented many decades ago helped a lot of people out of poverty and provided them with stable affordable homes. 50 years on, the West is still having problems in providing affordable homes in their own nation!
As someone has said, "From the third world to the first, in thirty-five years." I'm old and enjoy what can be learned from LKY. Never heard of him until about six months ago. Looking forward to buying a biography or memoirs. The world order is changing, countries are moving away from the US --- for good reason -- I hope LKY's statesmanship and leadership is evident in those countries moving into powerful positions.
it's almost 20years since this interview and there is still so much depth to this conversation. You can tell that every word that LKY spoke was with so much thought and weight. The breadth of his understanding of geopolitics is ridiculous.
Since ive discovered this man ive been nothing but impressed, id vote for him over any of US candidate ive knoen in my lifetime. Old but still mentally all there. Hes wise, speaks well, makes good sensible points and arguements while having vast knowledge of the international political landscape. Its unfortunate that america has been without a leader of such caliber for close to a century. We have been electing mediocre men who have thrived on the prosperity created by their betters, while losing that prosperity little by little every year. Its sickening and sad to see someone like this with such gravitas to them think on our leaders of the last 3 decades
I am pretty sure America has more than a few genius like LKY somewhere amidst them but the issue here is that those people are smart enough to not go into politics because they know no matter how good the solutions are the presence of (1) hyper-sensitivity from group think of various communities, (2) the prioritisation of “freedom” over what’s pragmatic as a solution and (3) the sense of individualism that the individual thinking is always right will always hinder the rare but necessary strong hand of governance sometimes and ultimately inhibit laws to pass (also some other additional factors like having too many cooks in the kitchen, and having a right vs left mindset rather than a middle line mindset)
LKY is impressive and it is very easy be in awe of him and what he has accomplished. Charles shouldn't be answering his own questions, filling in blanks nor interrupting LKY answers. I fail to understand what Charles was trying to do.
Such a wild assumption that he'd hold a controlling position over his son. Like this man couldn't raise a capable son who's his own man within his own rite. Very unlikely LKW, the father of a nation would raise a glorified vassal. Hope Mr. Rose was only playing devils advocate - otherwise that's disrespectful premise for a question. 22:40
Goodness! I have been listening to this man and I feel so unworthy to even make any comment even though it is all about admiration... This man is priceless!!
IMHO the interviewer Charlie Rose did a terrible job... Lee Kuan Yew was a man with great experience and knowledge. In the interview, he brought in several items of knowledge as a way of introducing them. But as soon as he (LKY) introcued these items, the interviewer jumped in filling the 'body' of the topic! What a disgusting manner of interviewing someone with so much capability.
Why does Charlie talk so much! He is typical bad interviewer trying to put words in others mouth and interrupting continuosly. LKY is a class apart. Let him talk. people want to listen to him not you Charlie.
Around 30:00 when he envisioned China's future "... 2025...5 times GDP of Japan but still lagging behind in technology in next 50 or 100 years", watching it in 2023 just reminds me how much China has achieved in many areas (including technology) in the last two decades and how much the dynamics of global geopolitics have shifted in the last 3 years if not months that even Lee didn't dare foresee China coming to the center stage this early (with USA getting gradually sidelined in intl community and getting sucked into its own suicidal whirpool deeper still at the same time). Or he already saw it coming, but he was always a filial son of Confucian tradition (by his own definition in many occasions) and a miraculous survivor of Japanese imperialist brutality (also by his own account in many occasions in an all too forgiving manner) and said what he had to say, about China, and about Japan, to an American...
….True….China ONCE grew exponentially, and achieved an increase in prosperity never seen in so short a time…But, it also hid deep fault lines and economic fissures that have never been addressed , and which now threaten its further growth… Large, systemic issues (such as corruption) poison the entire country, resulting in inferior and/or defective products…No one will choose a Chinese-made product, if a Western one is available ….That kind of reputation is FATAL (as is its reputation for cheating, stealing & taking short-cuts-which also raise safety issues about its products) Probably most disastrous for China’s future, however, is its current leader-who has revealed himself to be totally incompetent, and who has, almost single-handedly, destroyed China’s reputation, irreparably damaging its relationships, and stopping China’s growth in its tracks-all, with the decisions that HE, alone, has made….But most disastrous for China is its isolation. Xi’s aggressiveness toward neighbors, his rude and undiplomatic language and actions have caused China to stand almost alone (except for a few, fellow pariahs, like Russia & Iran)….In less than a decade, he has managed to lose China the respect & friendship she used to have….
I have huge respect and admiration for LKY's forthrightness . He was great visionary. World needs more leader like him. His quick thinking has changed Singapore to a first world state.
I immensely enjoy the wisdom of LKY and as much as I found Rose disruptive, his view represents the popular and often simplistic belief that LKY was able to address eloquently
Forgot how bad an interviewer Charlie was Won't let guest speak for more than 15 seconds, especially a non native English speaker, is ridiculous Can really see how he was a sexual harasser. He clearly has a high opinion of himself to interrupt influential world leaders so
It makes me disappointed when watching this video, not because LKY performed badly but the impatient interviewer always interrupted his speech and asked questions piece-wisely. Before that I expect I could learn from LKY’s viewpoint how the world was going on and how he analysed the situation after 2000. Some of the questions asked by the interviewer are good but he didn’t give enough time to LKY to response thoroughly. I hope there are some more professional Interviews with LKY somewhere on RU-vid
Great Statesman, who is called Father of Singapore. Great example of Global Leader , who has great knowledge, articulate and clear understanding of any problems....He should have been made the UN Secretary General
LKY was way off in his predictions. China's GDP passed Japan's in 2010(6 years after this interview) instead of by 2020. China is already almost 5x Japan's GDP after 20 years instead of 50. China reached 50% urbanization after only six years from this interview rather than 20. China has almost caught up to Japan technologically after 20 years instead of 50-100. He also predicted American economic preeminence for 50-100 years, but that also seems unlikely.
A brilliant man. A competent host actually. To get the most out of the conversation from a very wise man over a very wide range of deep topic within a fixed time slot! So good!
It's impossible to overstate the importance of his conclusions about "Wahhabism" (which is an offensive term, but I digress), it is the formal spirit of politicized sharia that has been re-invigorated by Saudi and other Gulf-state money. It has been championed by the greatest scholars because it is the best funder of education. Frankly I think that with an inflation-based faith tax there could be an American countervailing trend from the tax given to Muslim American faith groups that could easily beat it and re-modernize (yes, re, it used to be modernized between the 40's-70's) Islamic culture and religious beliefs. It would really be extremely unexpensive, and that's if we don't add tax money to it besides as the arguments for religious neutrality of the state are far more pronounced than one would imagine, it just happens to be locked behind a Deist text wall from the enlightenment, which should be studied, especially a treatise on tolerance by Voltaire. One can grasp a lot of the beauty of that particularly advanced belief system in Thomas Paine's (the American founding father's) The Age of Reason. It is a singular book, most unwise to write at the time but its insights are absolutely timeless, like the notion of priestcraft, true theology etc.
Lee in 2004: In fifty years, China's economy will be at least five times that of Japan's. In 2024, China's economy is alrready five times that of Japan's.
LKY very cleverly withheld his tongue on some very important perspectives of global politics in the interest of S'pore. .. Moreover, as it goes things can basically be somewhat at odds with his projections in 2050.
With All Due #Respect, #thankyou And #congratulations For Sharing This Video With Us All. RIP Late Founding Father Mr Lee Kuan Yew. May Your Soul Rest In #peace 🤗🤗💜🇸🇬
17:55 The best and the brightest of Singapore goes into the government & the bureaucracy. "First we had to get the State going. Supposing we had had a weak government, and lots of bright young people running around making money. We would not have cohered as a nation and never have been. Before there must be a sense of common destiny - that we share a common obligation to each other. Otherwise, everybody for himself / why should I (if I'm a loser) be part of the game?" 19:40 The robustness of the American economy is its ability to meet unexpected challenges, adapt, downsize, change, revamp, revive, start new industries, flourish & move ahead - more than any other economy. He came to this view by studying Europe, Japan, and America (once the State & common destiny is established). He did not start out with this view, because he was brought up by the British and thought a certain amount of stability was needed (he was wrong. Margaret thatcher couldn't complete the job because she never got the unions around). 21:00 The Middleman is not productive, he's just parasitical - that's the Chinese feudal society 21:15 China is entrepreneurial, but the cream of the crop still goes into government. The difference between China is they have so many people that they can still have many leftover to go into entrepreneurship. 31:00 The rise of China & India 45:00 Live and let live attitude 40:00 Americans' have a consumption lifestyle causes the world to wonder how long we can preserve and protect the environment. 49:50 American's obsession with casualties makes the world feel as if, "only American lives are important." 52:30 Americans go in with noble, high minded objectives to bring democracy and change the nature of the society - that's not easy, and that's a long term goal.
He wasn’t wrong, he was just giving China more time to catch up. He understood the Chinese very well, as he saw himself, that the Chinese are a determined people, hardworking when they have to, pragmatic and realistic like he himself was. He could foresee many things in advance not because he had a crystal ball but because he understood human nature and from people’s history and background, he knew their outcomes. When he saw the enormous size of china’s population and knowing their history, he knew someday China will eventually become a superpower.
A lot of commenters have no idea of what Charlie Rose’s job is, or how much knowledge and intelligence it requires. Most people would be absolutely useless if they were in his chair, and not realising that is the first indication of someone’s lack of intellectual fluidity.

every country desperately needs leader like him. it's available but capitalist don't want them because they are ruthless, no class , and public is only one who is responsible for that. public is not living at conscious power..they are hypnotised by capitalist .. they don't even know who is the real looter.. they accept every new thing in their lives instead of mostly boycotted..
To many people in the West esp America they see LKY as a wiseman who is a deep thinker and one with a good understanding of the world. To Mahathir LKY is the little emperor of the tiny Middle Kingdom. To the Chinese after Deng Xiaoping LKY ideas of China are outdated and not so appreciated like in the West.
Look, If LKY is in charge of Malaysia, he would've turn Malaysia into a world economic powerhouse similar to South Korea in under a generation. Everyone outside Malaysia can see how incompetent Mahathir is. He is only good at winning elections and giving false promises. But when it comes to managing the country, he lets his ego, grudge and jealousy gets in his way. That is not the hallmark of a good leader. Malaysia had so much potential, so much natural resources in an advantageous position in the middle of SE Asia, free from natural disaster. What a waste!
@@yudianto9889 we gotta admit that life is never perfect, and now the country is facing racism and extremism. Blaming the minorities for the Malay not doing so well in the country helps them to win votes, the people are also lowly educated then what do you expect? A change in Malays viewpoints? Impossible for the next 50 years…
@@yudianto9889 - mahathir can't hold a candle to LKY in terms of respect accorded by others - be it in intellect, strong viewpoints, passion and honesty that is essential to good governance!
To you he was a dictator. To Singaporean, we are blessed he was our leader at the most crucial time in our independence. Without him, Singapore will just not exist and the people living in poverty.
@@AHAN1234-S Not saying he wasn't a great statesman. The authoritarian legacy he left should make one wonder if giving up some freedom is worth him and his party running the country forever. What if you want to do away with the draconian punishments? What if you want to protect your privacy? As great as Washington was, he stepped down after 2 terms to give others a chance to run the country.
@@flowertowerrr You actually don't get it. Who decides what's a crime? Why is sex between 2 consenting adults a crime? Why pot is a crime? Why speaking up against the authority a crime? Shouldn't the populace determine that instead of it being forced down your throat? Sorry but our conversation ends here.
I lived in Singapore and appreciate the gratitude, respect and admiration Singaporeans have for this Great Leader. He was very measured in this interview since as we all know his criticism of American Imperialism has been second to none in SE Asia. SE Asia nations are ridden with ubber smart, hyper intelligent people who understand the devastating and destructive nature of US Imperialism and British colonialism.
