Good job Lee. After I also researched this years ago, and I came to the same conclusion, and bought Lymans "M" dies or sets for all my pistol dies. So Lee must be listening to cast bullet reloaders, I know many have long been less than happy with the old die. Great video Walter and thanks for the screenshot.

The runs comprising Darr River Downs station were taken up during the early 1870s by a number of people, and were progressively acquired from 1876 by Baird, Rowan and Co., a group of Melbourne businessmen carrying on business together as sheep and cattle farmers. Although the Darr River Downs runs were recorded as being stocked with cattle initially, during the 1880s many of the newer pastoralists commenced raising sheep rather than cattle. Darr River Downs was consolidated during the late 1880s, and the lease taken up by Baird, Rowan and Co. The lease was transferred to William Taylor and Andrew Rowan, in partnership as Taylor, Rowan and Co, in 1888. Taylor and Rowan appear to have also been in partnership with Archibald Fisken and John Bertram, as in 1893, records indicate that the lease was transferred from Taylor, Rowan, Fisken and Bertram to the Trust and Agency Co. of Australasia. Rowan retired from the firm in 1897, and in August 1898, the lease again appears to have been held by Taylor, Fisken and Bertram. The lease was transferred to the Corporation of the Bank of Australasia later in 1898.[1]

Yes, it's hard to make one expander for all bullet types. I find the original expander over expands the case for plated bullets. So, I bought an extra one and reduced it a bit to save on case mouth cracks. If you are using the funnel adapter you can adjust the flare, but with the case activated powder measures, getting the full stroke will over flare.
@viejo2a
@viejo2a 5 месяцев назад
Hi Curt, and thanks for stopping by. I have a bunch of turrets set up with different die sets. Generally, my MO is to batch-size the brass first on the APP, which is an extra step. That frees up station 1 for a Lyman-type expander. Then I just use a short charging die with the autodrum. That funnel does no expansion but activates the powder measure. The funnel insert can easily be moved from turret to turret along with the newer poder measure, leaving the die body itself ‘set’ on each turret. This process works for all my handgun rounds except those shorter than 40 S&W. For 9mm I’ve been using a 25 Auto expander funnel which also will activate the powder measure, yet not do any more expansion. The newly designed caliber-specific funnels may well eliminate the extra step of pre-sizing my brass.🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

Yep, I was exchanging emails with Tammy at Lee Tech support about this yesterday and today. They said that they are in the midst of changing over to this new style expander plug. I was really happy to hear that news! Also a heads up... if you using the older(longer die body) 357 Mag powder through die the new style expander plugs will not work, you have to order a new die because the new 38/357 powder though die are shorter then the old die bodies so they can do both 38 Special and 357 Mag.

The M from Lyman has nothing to do with the step on the expander. In their early diagrams showing the parts of their dies they used letters to indicate the parts. The letter M was used to indicate the expander. That is where the M in M type expanders came from.
@viejo2a
@viejo2a 5 месяцев назад
Correct. The Lyman “M” die is their expander die, the designation being carried on expander die bodies. Lacking a better reference, we have used the term for many years a comparative reference for a stepped expander plug. Thanks for that addition. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

These are for the powder through expander dies correct? Noe has been making M Style expanders to work in the universal expander die for a few years now. The make them in most any size you need. You can even get them in various diameters for the caliber. This way you can experiment with different expander sizes to change case neck tension. Some cartridges, depending on the actual barrel specs use different bullet diameters. With different diameter plugs you can experiment to find which size works best with what diameter bullets you use. A couple of examples are the 303 British and the 7.62x54R Russian. Depending on the barrel you can need bullets from .308 up to .312. these are all jacketed bullet sizes. Cast can be even bigger. Up to .314 or so. In my 7.62x54R I use bullets of about .311 for jacketed and .314 or .315 for cast. Another are Marlin lever guns. Using standards for caliber work ok with jacketed but cast need larger. In my 1894 most any jacketed of .429 or .430 works fine, cast needs to be .433 or a bit more depending on the bullet design. So being able to buy various expander plugs at reasonable price makes have several sizes for each caliber makes sense.

Being an old school type, I was never a fan of Lee's stuff. I have many older Lyman and a few RCBS dies that, in my opinion, are far superior. I had bought a set of 45 Colt dies by Lee, and cannot stand the powder through expansion die. Further the seating die has an awful seating stem. I had bought this set to replace my old set of Lyman AA which I've used for decades. This was to replace the sizing die that was non-carbide. So I simply use the Lee carbide sizer, and the rest I use my old Lyman dies. I suppose I'm just the proverbial old dog that doesn't care to learn new tricks. 😅

@viejo2a
@viejo2a 5 месяцев назад
Hi, and thanks for watching. Putting additional flare on the case generally does not work for me for two reasons. First, the bullet will not sit squarely in the case and is apt to seat crooked as a result unless guided with the fingers up into the throat of the die. Secondly, an over-flared case can scrape the inside of the seating die. Besides the obvious scurfing up of the walls of that die, the case can begin to fold into the bullet. That’s not necessarily a bad thing unless the bullet has started crooked, in which situation PC or lead may get scraped. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

It because of the Polymer on the bullet
@viejo2a
@viejo2a 5 месяцев назад
Hello, and thanks for watching, Steemer. It’s not about the powder coat. It’s about our softer cast bullets being scraped by the case mouth. It’s happens with traditionally lubed bullets as well but it’s not quite so problematic since we can simply remove any lead ring that gets shaved up. Those bullets still retain all the lubricant. With PC bullets, the PC IS the lube, and I don’t want the bare sides of the bullet exposed. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

Oversize cast bullets? Why? What about bullet sizing? Got a Lyman Lube sizer, and a simple Lee bullet sizer, no issues loading cast bullets with the old dies for 40 yrs
@viejo2a
@viejo2a 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for stopping by Willie..I size my cast bullets to diameters larger by .001-.002 than standard sizes for jacketed or plated. That makes them “oversized”. I too used older style expanders for years when I used the lube-a-matic to size. Scraping the bullet against the case mouth with a traditionally lubed bullet is not a problem. We just remove any lead ring that may form, right? But for my powder coated cast bullets, the M style expander works better. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸

Ok. but I guess you slugged your gun for dia. and needs a bit larger bullets. Otherwise why overbore?. Not questioning, just courious? Nunca acabamos de mejorar lo que esta perfecto. Pero que divertido. Abrazo@@viejo2a
@viejo2a
@viejo2a 5 месяцев назад
@@WillyK51 Ho again, Willie. I do, indeed slug my barrels. Sizing cast bullets to larger than bore diameter does a couple of things. First, it ensures that the bullet will completely obturate the barrel. This helps it fully engage the rifling which can aid in accuracy. Secondly, this helps prevent gas blow-by that may cut lead from the bullet’s sides and deposit it ahead of the bullet. This will cause undue leading in the barrel which will quickly detract from accuracy. Also, it is important for my bullets to be at least as large, or slightly larger than the cylinder throats in a revolver. Again, I want that round to completely seal those cylinder throats to prevent blow-by giving rise to leading in the forcing cone and/or barrel. Revolver cylinder throats are generally larger than bore diameter. 🤛🏻🔫🇺🇸
