Leeds Castle has been called the loveliest castle in England and it certainly lives up to the name. The elegant stone keep, towers, and crenelated battlements surrounded by a tranquil moat, beautiful gardens and lush parkland are exactly what you would picture as an idealized medieval castle. Across the centuries, it has often been strong women who have owned, enjoyed, renovated and defended Leeds castle. It was the tranquil retreat for generations of medieval Queens, the scene of a deadly stand-off between great ladies, a prison for two accused royal witches, and a luxurious playground for aristocrats and Hollywood stars. I have fond memories of coming her as a child, and I’m excited to be back. So come with me as we explore this tranquil castle and it’s scandalous history!
Queen Eleanor of Castile
Queen Margaret of France
Queen Isabella of France
Queen Anne of Bohemia
Queen Joan of Navarre
Queen Catherine of Valois
Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester
Queen Catherine of Aragon
Olive, Lady Baillie
Leeds Castle did not comp my stay, so this is not a paid promotion. I just love this Castle!

Correction : Henry VII didn't claim the throne through his mother Catherine of Valois but through his mother Margaret Beaufort. Margaret was the the great-granddaughter of John of Gaunt, founder of the Lancastrian branch but her claim was considered inferior because her grandfather John Beaufort was born in 1373 but his mother wasn't married to John of Gaunt until 1396. Canon law decreed that children conceived before marriage are to be considered as bastards but Richard II got Pope Boniface IX declare John Beaufort legitimate, still Henry IV excluded John Beaufort from the succession. John's son John Beaufort II, Duke of Somerset had a somewhat better claim through his mother Margaret Holland as Edward I of England -> Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent -> Joan of Kent -> Thomas Holland II, Earl of Kent -> Margaret Holland. So even if we take the Beaufort claim to be void, Henry VII could still claim the throne but it would require to go back by atleast 7 generations & there were already many aristocrats in & outside England who had much better claims. Most importantly, Margaret, sister of Edward IV, widow of Charles the Bold Duke of Burgundy, although childless, was actively trying to undermine Henry VII with the assistance of her step son-in-law HRE Maximilian I. This made Henry VII's marriage to Elizabeth of York even more important.

I was about to say this. Cause she was a French princess so they can’t claim the English throne through her.
@Alex-zs7gw
@Alex-zs7gw 10 месяцев назад
Did you even listen? How do you have 51 likes? She said Catherine was the mother of Henry VI. Catherine would have also been Henry VII's grandmother with Henry VI being Henry VII's half-uncle
@doreensika837
@doreensika837 10 месяцев назад
@@Alex-zs7gw it doesn’t work like that I’m afraid he is correct. You can’t claim the throne from your half uncle who’s mother was not the rightful ruler of England.
@Alex-zs7gw
@Alex-zs7gw 10 месяцев назад
@@doreensika837 yeah I'm not simple lol ...perhaps I've overreacted to a typo and the OP meant grandmother when referring to CoV. I don't think anyone then or now however believed Henry Tudor's claim had anything to do with Catherine of Valois - being consort What complicates the WotR however is firstly how Henry VI acknowledged the legitimacy of his half siblings and elevated their status at the time, and the debate over matrilineal lineage with the Lancastrians claiming a decree had been agreed by Edward III and John to negate any matrilineal claims (York having matrilineal through 2nd son and patrilineal through 4th Vs theirs through pat 3rd)

I love history. Medieval time period is my favorite. But I also love hearing about the history of castles and manor houses. The people who built it and all the way to current times is so fascinating. It is a shame that families have to struggle to keep their homes. Very sad. But this has been a happy story and Thank you for sharing your story with us 😊.

I have seen images of Leeds Castle, and I knew that it was traditionally the abode of royal and noble women, but I was not aware of it's full history until now. I was also not aware that it had been, not that long ago, a ruin! Wow - am I happy that Lady Bailey spent what was necessary to restore it like she did. That was a MAJOR risk she took. I am glad that it paid off. Great video.

I visited Leeds Castle in 2006 and absolutely loved it there. I did have a bit of a giggle at Lady Bailie's aviary though. There are some amazing exotic birds there, including the Australian White Ibis, known to us Aussies as the bin chicken. They are everywhere over here, getting into rubbish bins, pooping everywhere, and generally annoying people. Personally I love the cheeky buggers, but I never really thought of them as being particularly exotic.

Actually, Henry VII's claim to the throne was through his mother Margaret Beaufort, a descendant of John of Gaunt (a son of Edward III). Prince George's wife was Princess Marina, not Marianna, of Greece and Denmark. Barbara Hutton and Cary Grant were known as "Cash and Cary" (hopefully younger people know what the phrase means). Very good video.

I had no idea that Leeds Castle had such a history involved with slavery! Owners with lands in Virginia and Eli Whitney inventor of the cotton gin which further slavery in the US. Wow
@grtlyblesd
@grtlyblesd 10 месяцев назад
Eli Whitney didn’t own slaves, and in fact, he *thought* his invention would reduce the need for slaves and hasten the end of slavery. It didn’t work out that way, but neither did the cotton gin bring him the wealth it could have had he handled patents and manufacturing differently. To say Leeds is connected to slavery is a gross oversimplification. That’s like saying the Tower of London is connected to slavery because Phillis Wheatley visited there.
