If nomadic people had rights as everyone else - most unemployed sedentary people on benefits do not contribute a penny in tax to society either - they would be able to work and have jobs and perhaps contribute with taxes. Finally, someone who speaks sense. Of course this is the solution, but I suspect that most of the people who have commented here, have no interest in happy solutions. They need an underdog to direct abuse at. Perhaps their conforming lives are a little less than perfect bliss?

Just like all of us all travellers are different. I live in an area with thousands around they are no problem and have lived here as long as everyone else. I have worked for them and they have worked for me, everyone got paid on time. When you meet proper travellers there homes are immaculate and they are strict on there children .

@mike sixx Talk about an entitled attitude. People invite you to live in their town and the taxpayers provide accommodations and it's not good enough so you destroy the property and abuse your neighbors kindness. You have to really believe you are owed something to act like they did.

@mike sixx It's unfortunate they won't take ownership of their part of the conflict. I've watched a lot of videos about Travellers and they always cry racism and discrimination. I'm sure there has been hate directed toward them but it seems that some Travellers engage in behaviors that fuel the conflict and instigate responses from the community at large, the Council and the police. It seems that the English have tried to meet them half way only to be accused of discrimination when people respond to negative behaviors.

Tarn Sand I'm not sure what 'situation' you refer to. The most worrying situation is that we, in the 'developed world', with our exemplary settled lives, consume over twice the entire planet's yearly resources. The 'situation' deteriorates rapidly with 'Overshoot Day' being celebrated on Aug 19th. Or perhaps the 'situation' is a reference to the eternal wars for resources that we inflict on others? Oodles of tax payers' hard earned cash are wasted on political campaigns, advertising, weapons, celebrations, and all manner of things. It should not cost 'the earth' to have community land that is served by utility companies. To assume that travelling people don't want to work is incorrect. The point made in the programme is that the lack of infrastructure means that they are ill equipped to find work.

So take it up with your boss or the politicians you hire to sort the country, dont take it out on folk who Do pay tax, Who obviously go to work as you cannot get benefits without an address. Thicko

Additionally, they make the pipes to funnel the water everywhere and someone has to pay for that as well. People don't think about the entire concept.

If you aren't one of the individuals that are living off the system then they aren't referring to you. No one mentioned you by name. People are tired of working their rears off to support able bodied adults who should be working. Here in the US there are plenty of white people doing this. As a white woman I don't feel the need to comment if someone points out too many whites get welfare. I know it's the truth and I also know they aren't referring to me. Water IS free, you can get free water from the rivers, etc. We pay for the services of receiving cleaned water directly to our homes.

Liz M. Not true. There is hardly any natural clean water due to pollution now a days. You don't pay for the service of just receiving water, it is treated so it is a drinkable. I have drank fresh water in the high mountains and it is completely different than tap water. If you think you can go to a river behind your house or off of a city and drink it as is, you'll get quite sick.

Gypsies and travellers in general did do work and were welcomed when they arrived to fruit pick, mend pots and pans, sell horses, etc. A material economy depends on pinning people down to a spot and turning them into consumers and tax payers. Nomads do not value material wealth but choose freedom and family. Providing common land with proper facilities for travellers to stay on would enable them to do as they did before WW2, to travel around a circuit working as they go. By not providing basic facilities (that any traveller can enjoy), governments aim to force them to settle and conform. Why?! Sedentarism does indeed kill the planet, so what is it that we cannot see beyond it? The level of some of the comments is pitiful and confirms in my mind that those who really object to travellers are xenophobes, bigots and bullies - education is what THEY need!
