Hi Lydia, I just discovered this video two months ago and I've been doing this exercise every day. Thank you for posting about his passing, but I'm so sorry to hear it.
+MIchael Lynch After wanting for years to learn the Ukelele I discovered Arthurs Uke Blog and it seems to be the top online system (google it if you're interested)
MIchael Lynch I have a problem when I press my left hand thumb behind the neck of the fret.. I get shooting pains and it lasts for many days before it goes away.. hence I tend to put my thumb over the neck.. is there anything that I could do to change the left thumb position?
Really great ! Left hand exercises are awesome. Thanks so much and looking forward to playing better. ( Need to as it's keeping me sane in this world. PS: I'm 71.
Mike, that was awesome! I found it really challenging at first, but with practise, it became easier. I'll try to exercise every day. It seems worth the effort.
Thanks for this video! I always took for granted the basics of this exercise. Thanks for reiterating it's importance as it is paying off dividends in chording...
I love you for that exercise! I'm a uke newbie and want to learn so I can teach a couple little ones in the family. Much appreciation, and thank you Ukulele Mike!
Thanks for the tips, Mike. I usually start my groups/classes with the 1234 exercise, but never thought about reversing, and having them place all four fingers at the start. Will try it.
Thank you for this very helpful video. I have just started playing the Ukelele and I am experiencing difficulties with finger placement/dexterity. I am sure that these exercises will help!
3:30 If you’ve already seen the video and want to go directly to the exercises. I’m not sure if anyone else does this, but I like to go back to this video and practices the exercises with him.
Hi Michael, just want to say thankyou for your vids on here, I would not be able to learn with out them as I have problems with face to face teachers. so thankyou. x
I totally agree with you. It seems that a lot of Ukulele players don't see/want to see themselves as serious musicians, thus don't want to do scales/apeggios like the rest of the musical world. Yet one can't get any good at any instrument without doing them. I love the exercises, in any instrument you need to warm up and also in some cases the warm up the instrument as well. I'm an ex-flute player and a virgin Ukulele player.
Michael, thanks so much. I saw the second video first, so I watched that and commented. Same for this one, I really like these exercises and hope you will post more.
Hi Mike, Many thanks for your instruction videos, so good, ,my playing has improved, as you said it would. The up the neck and stretch exercise has helped me enormously together with exercises #1 & #2. Do you please have any other exercises that you can recommend ? Thanks for all you are doing to promote ukulele playing, you certainly have a lot to answer for in ukulele playing here in the UK. Once again many thanks, best wishes, Peter Bailey.
What about the fingers of the right hand during this exercise? Are you doing the entire fingerpicking with your right thumb (on each string), or are you assigning different fingers to each string? Thank you!
Dear Mike. Wishing you a great 2014 first of all. Thank yo so much for your lessons, I love it and am trying hard. In one of your video's I think I saw the Seattle Needle? Do you live there? I live in South Africa but I am in Seattle usually in your summer with my family. My daughter is a harpist (Maxine Eilander) and she is married to Stephen Stubbs, Lutenist, baroque guitarist, conductor etc. Do you teach at all? I was wondering if I could maybe have some lessons if indeed you live in Seattle? In the mean time, thank yo again for sending me your wonderful teaching emails. Kind regards, Ineken van Ketel Eilander.
Please, please do a few guitar tutorials, I've been looking on youtube for years for a good guitar teacher, and people either go way too fast or too complicated, or they drone through lessons making it hard to learn.
Great video! Does anyone have any suggestions about which fingers to use on the strumming hand? For example, the thumb on the top two strings, and then index and then middle? Or something else?
Hi! I've been playing a year & i love these exercizes cuz this is the time to practice exactly that: the wide variety of strums... I suggest your basics: DDDD - DDDDu - DDDuDu - DDuDuDu - DuDuDuDu - then picking 4321 - 1234 - 42314232... Learn those, FEELING the music with your eyes closed & you'll be well on your way to good consistent strumming... Use these exercises to play & cultivate your personal flare & dynamics... Happy Trails👋 Ms. CharLee #Ragamuffin_Ukes
I would typically do a few of these excercises several times or so before everytime I play . . . and then a few more towards the end of my playing time. The most important thing is to do them EVERYDAY
