Left Hand Tension and Vice Grip Problems: Relaxation and awareness exercises on classical guitar. Make sure you have a good posture, position, and left hand technique before working on these exercises (check out the links below). It's also very important to play close to the frets in order to not buzz.

you read my mind. Was noticing a lot of hand tension last night as a beginner player

Oh good, it's important to catch it early. If you feel anything, stop playing and give it time to heal. Lots of other things you can do from watching pro players, theory, musicianship, history!

I will need to re-watch this at least once a month to remind myself to use the buzzing exercises with repertoire. :)

Yes, it's an easy thing to forget as one gets wrapped up in repertoire and other things but it's so important.

Thank you Bradford, this is invaluable! I hadn't realized how much pressure I was exerting on the fingerboard and I would blame the soreness in my fingers on wrong choice of strings. In addition, I can feel that relaxing my left hand also reduces shoulder and neck tension. I will definitely keep practicing those exercises.

Excellent! Have struggled with left hand vise grip for years and have tried various relaxation techniques, but always end up back where I started with excess tension. Your comments about changing muscle memory makes sense. I will be doing these exercises for sure.

Thanks so much for this video. I have been a life long player with considerable tension in my left hand. Advanced Bach pieces (lots of bar chords) seem to bring on some carpal tunnel syndrome issues and I have recently focused on lower tension strings and wrist stretches. With shorter practice times. I have read Leisner’s “Playing with Ease” which was also helpful but this video is spot on!

Yes, and the way in which we practice is a big part of this. I've had tons of hand problems but these days I can feel the signs early on and know to take a break.

Very interesting! You are really very proficient at this , simply cause you have to and years and years of practice, it’s your job ! But those of us watching have non guitar day job 😂 I can do it at really slow speed with sneaky looks for a shift up the fretboard, first position is fine , it’s the shifting !! But I’m happy to memorise for performance speed , that’s good for healthy brain function 😊
@Thisisclassicalguitar
@Thisisclassicalguitar 2 месяца назад
Have you ever dedicated time to shifting exercises with first looking until the muscle memory is there and then without looking? It is certainly something we should work on for just a few minutes a day, longterm. Easy, but long long term.

@@Thisisclassicalguitar my comment was left on wrong video , I was watching the not looking at fretboard one , dunno how that happened 😂 I practice shifting but never not looking no !! I will try to do it in future ,

Thank you. I have stopped playing with my left hand for some weeks now because of serious elbow pain, again. Probably due to much tension. I am following your free training, and paying attention to your posture training. Maybe it's a combination of bruising my elbow hard and practicing 40 minutes a day whit to much tension in the left hand. Frustrating I have to stop, again, but after 3 weeks rest, I will try these exercises to reduce tension. Meanwhile the right hand gets a lot more practice. I'm a beginner and have been practicing your book for some months now. Thank you for your great work and motivation.

You're welcome. Re-examine your guitar position and posture and hand positions as well. Plus, break up your practice session into more small chunks and get up from your chair often and stay hydrated. Learn to feel the early signs on any discomfort and stop immediately. When I have flare ups I usually only need a day or two off if I catch it early.

Shoulder tension is tough to get rid of. Check after every phrase and at the end of each section. Make it part of your muscle memory to relax after each phrase.

It has already. I went through the exercises a few times then played the piece I'm currently working on and it has definitely helped with parts where I get nervous and therefore tense up. Thanks very much.

As I approach the nut, this becomes a bit of an issue. First, and to a lesser degree, second frets require much more pressure.
@Thisisclassicalguitar
@Thisisclassicalguitar 5 месяцев назад
Yes, that is true but still not as much pressure as most students think.
