Scud Race, hopefully the one you hinted about at the end. My fav Sega arcade racer. A localish arcade has it and my closest arcade has Daytona 2. Why they never released them back in the day I don't know. If they did a Daytona/scud/sega rally arcade bundle for xbox/ps now I would be all over it!
I still can’t believe Daytona USA 2 never got a port on consoles. It seemed like it would have been perfect for a Xbox Live Arcade/PSN release. I suppose it’s never too late to bring to modern consoles, but, I won’t hold my breath on that.
When I released Supermodel in 2011, someone at Sega of Europe got in touch with me to explore doing some Model 3 ports on XBox 360. They sent an NDA and then ghosted me. It was super weird. I think the big problem with these games now is the licensing expense.
@@trzy Hey Bart! I never knew that you'd been contacted by Sega about this, that's really interesting. How bizarre that they just ghosted you afterwards. So bizarre that Sega decided to just totally ignore Daytona USA 2 the whole time they had the license for the first game - it only just got de-listed from XBLA and PSN fairly recently (Can't recall if it was late last year or early this year).
i love how the camera in these arcades racing games is strategically positioned so it always give you an excelent sightline to all the awesome scenery that surrounds the track. 3/5 of the screen is dedicated just for that, with the actual racing taking place on the bottom 2/5.
Been watching your show for many years now. I don't understand how you don't have much closer to 1 million subscribers. Best retro video game channel on youtube!
Just wanted to let you guys know some of these games have had Dreamcast conversions made by the community. They work on emulators and real hardware alike. Most of them are Atomiswave games, but some NAOMI ones exist. Some examples include King of Fighters XI and Dolphin Blue, with lots more to come. I can't link them here but it's a search away, and I definitely think they should be covered in a future episode.
Quality episode! Good selection of games and the pronunciation of Hachoo! was on point. Ending skit looks like one of those silly Japanese commercials western actors did in the 80's and 90's, that surely wouldn't come back to haunt them as the world internationalized with some information superhighway, or somethin'.
A couple I hadn't heard of in this one! The enemies scaling into the screen was pretty neat in Hachooo Loved the filter & effects you pulled off for the ending segment of this one also!
I highly recommend Emergency Call Ambulance for the Sega Model 3. It is only 4 stages long but it will take you awhile to get good enough to make it through all 4 stages. If you end up featuring it and play it for the episode I recommend picking the manual transmission. The last stage seems almost impossible to do with an automatic. I played it with an Xbox controller and set the left and right shoulder buttons to shift down and shift up. Pro tip! You can gain extra speed by switching back and forth between lower and higher gear. I'm interested in hearing your opinion on it since it is my top Model 3 game.
Waverunner in the arcade was amazing. Still remember sitting on the jet ski which made it very immersive. I definitely liked this arcade game better than wave race 64!
Alright Joe, I'm gonna need that shirt...oh wait I've still got my Crazy Taxi Dreamcast preorder shirt from back in the day...& it's still sealed in the circle container
Star Wars Trilogy was my JAM at my local Golf N Stuff back in the day. Sometimes, i didn't play anything else when I went. I was really happy to play it again via emulation
The Ring in Toy Fighter does have gameplay benefits. You probably missed it at 7:15 but you jan hop onto the ring to perform unique aerial maneuvers. You can also hit it to send a shockwave that can push the opponent towards you.
Hippodrome was at the liquor store my mom would sometimes go to when i was really young. I never got to play it but alwayd remembered what it looked like
Star Wars Trilogy Arcade is one of my favourite arcades of all time, I ended up in a high-score battle on one cabinet in the early 00s with Tom Scott. Inversion was weird, iirc the operator could choose inverted or not separately for flight, shooting, and maybe saber separately. Of course this meant if you walked up to a random cab it might well be backwards from what you expect. The scout troopers could be killed quicker by shooting them rather than their bikes, however that's a smaller target and if you shot them after they fell off you'd go more dark side, which meant you took more damage and got less shield restored between rounds, you can see this happen as Joe shoots Ewoks. One other thing that makes this look harder is that the original cabinet has a huge joystick with massive throw, allowing you to be quite precise.
Let’s go!! Another Sunday morning, another GameSack episode. My suggestion for the next left in the Arcade episode: Spike out. Mario kart arcade GP 1&2 F-ZERO AX and the monster ride version. Gunmen Wars. Time Crisis 5 Time Crisis:Crisis Zone. Dead heat Ace Driver Alpine racer Alpine racer 2
The top-down, twin-stick tank shmup... I want to say it was called "Assault"... it had great controls and smooth gamplay. I can't say I have ever seen much like it.
Great video as always 😊 If I may suggest something for the 10th video in that series: could you show us briefly what were the controllers for these games, or maybe just an image of the cabinet? That would give us a good idea on how these games were played 😉
Hippodrome was called fighting fantasy also. Loved this and mastered it go for small axe and life gain you can do a death blow like golden axe which is devastating
Solar Assault looks like a game that would have been one of those Laserdisc games they sold for the Pioneer Laseractive alongside games like Pyramid Patrol.
The Wampas might just be a reference to Shadows of the Empire. There's rather famously a room if you're thorough in the Hoth level of all versions of the game with two Wampas that take for-freakin'-ever to kill.
Star Wars Trilogy Arcade is low key the best Star Wars game out there. It’s an excellent score based rollercoaster that takes you through all the original trilogy. The multiplier scoring is brilliant, even the lightsaber fights are great. Unfortunately though it’s tricky to find a cab in the wild that works properly nowadays and it just doesn’t feel the same in emulation.
Your channel is my favorite. I love these neat arcade games. I hope they make a comeback in the future. I would like to play a motorbike arcade game on an actual motorbike.
@GameSack there one thing missing in Daytona USA 2 there is a like a Grand Prix race where you race all 3 tracks into starting from the longest track to the oval in one full run.
9:50 And I think it looks like Amidar, the 1981 classic arcade game by Konami which also had some life on the Atari 2600. Heck, Amidar even has you control a monkey in some stages!
Wing War was especially noteable as one of only two games (G-LOC was the first) that ran on the R360 motion sim cabinet. I don't know if any arcades ever had enough money and space to do it but in theory you could link two of them together for multiplayer. But that would have taken a LOT of space and most arcades didn't have enough room for even one of those giant and rare machines let alone two.
I had played the original WaveRunner at the arcade a couple of years ago. I don't remember any popping but man, the game was fun. You play standing up with cabinet resembling water scooter that moves up and down and tilts as you turn. I wish I could try it another time
Epic episode, while not a *great* game the arcade experience was fun and I wonder how it would have felled like with lightguns on a console, I'm of course talking about the Rail Chase games! Keep up the amazing work!
6:30 Actually I was thinking more of the intro to the original Smash Brothers, where Master Hand pulls all the figures out of the toy box. Even in Melee's intro Mario is shown to be an Amiibo-like statue who is slowly brought to life.
Many games in there I did not know a thing about! But one thing why some of these games might not have been considered as potential hits on home consoles is that the cabinet itself was bringing most of the fun, like all the "Wave" titles, quite bland on a gamepad if you experienced the arcade before. I was also curious about Aqua Jack and sure enough, the reason why it controls like a plane is that it had a control stick like those in planes. I guess you can invert the direction in the emulator though.
Some lowly developer asked for 2 candy bars to port the toy game to Dreamcast.. instead his manager ate the arcade disc right in front of him.. this is how things worked back in the good ole days
One thing to consider, Sega racers and other simulation games often come with a cool gimmick like WaveRunner had the Jet Skis and etc. Kinda like how Mario Kart GP isn't as great as the console versions but the steering wheel and arcade cab make up for it.
Daytona USA 2 and Waverunner were in the local Chuck E. Cheese my family frequented, so I pretty much popped in 10 bucks worth of tokens and never moved from 'em. Great times!
At 19:14, the title screen for Solar Assault makes me think the designer didn't like the game or didn't look at it too much. The way the name is stylized, ASS is the first thing I see.
