What gets me is when people say that “Hamas is holding the Palestinians hostage”, but at the same time saying “the Palestinians should’ve stopped Hamas”. WHAT?!

I watched an interview with the Israeli president a few years ago. What was clear to me was his absolute disdain for the Palestinian people. It was clear that he does not see them as humans.

Thank you, Emma, not least for setting me off again. I've been crying almost non-stop for the last week. Owen is one of only a few voices consistently on the right side of things. Hodge, meanwhile, was on =e of the major bad actors behind the so-called 'Labour anti-Semitism crisis', that saw Corbyn vilified, the left essentially purged from the party, and the largest number of expulsions of Jewish members in history, and it's all because they advocate for ending the occupation in Palestine. The actions of Hamas are despicable, and they deserve to be excoriated, but Hamas couldn't exist without the occupation. The asymmetry is off the scale. Bows and arrows against the lightning, and almost nobody's got the backs of ordinary Palestinians.

The answer is No, Israel doesn't have the right to "defend" themselves killing civilians. The idea that if someone wrong you that gives you the right to punish him however you see fit is beyond barbaric. Even Romans had "An eye for an eye" meaning you can only hurt someone to the same extent he hurt you. Completely punishing a population the size of Detroit just for what some criminals did is insanely maniac.

Hamas may be a terrorist organisation, but so is Israel. Lots of innocent people on both sides will die because of the terrorism of BOTH sides. The poltician talks about the past few days, but fails to admit there have been may years of terror on the Palestinian people from Israel. I feel for the innocent people on both sides.

Yeah, the problem is indeed that one side of this argument ONLY cares about the suffering of innocents on one side of this conflict. That would be the pro-Israeli state side that shrew belongs to. The pro-Israeli state side refuses to acknowledge the suffering or even humanity of the Palestinians under any circumstances. They regularly dehumanize the Palestinians and constantly call for increasing their suffering. Humanitarians have repeatedly acknowledged the suffering of innocents on both sides and called for an end to all of it. Humanitarians just focus more on Palestinian suffering because their suffering is greater and Israel has the power to end the conflict. Israel is the oppressor and holds all the cards.

I get so angry at times the line between anti-zionism and anti-semitism starts to get tangled in my own mind. But I always go back to this. 25 years ago when I started to really question what the hell was really going on in Isreal Palestine I found my first answers coming from Israeli and Jewish writers, journalist, scholars and historians. They are the ones that pointed me to Arab, Palestinian and Western scholars, journalists and historians like Edward Said, Robert Fisk etc. With few exceptions (thank god for MR and others like you) western discourse on the subject is always the right wing Israeli government propaganda with a good sprinkling of religious mythology as history. Keep up the good work.

I think Owen was trying to be tactical by starting out by condemning hamas, so that way he would be able to point at that when the inevitable attack came, and look at how the woman blatantly lied even after he made such an emphatic denunciation at the very beginning of his statement.

She didn’t know how to deal with the fact of the humanity of Palestinians. She is mad she’s being asked to deal with that reality.

I am an Indigenous (Navajo) of Turtle Island. My ancestors were also ordered to leave our homes and land in the 4 Corners area in the 1860's and marched over 400 miles to a concentration camp in the Texas NM border which was known as the Long Walk. Over 25 percent of them died while on the march and while being held there for over 4 years along with the Mescalero Apache Unlike all the tribal nations we were allowed to return to a small portion of our original lands in 1868 rather than being forced to continue on to Oklahoma. The US figured it would be lest costly to just let the Navajo return to the what they thought was worthless land at the time. So we know what the Palestinian people are going through because we and almost every other Indigenous Tribal Nation have been there. The US wanted us out of the way for their "Manifest Destiny" so that they could take over our land and our resources to become one of the worlds wealthist nations at our expense. Colonization is wrong and people suffer History just keeps repeating itself and granted Hamas did start this latest war the Palestinian children should not have be the main victims of Israel's retailation. Just as they keep saying that Isreal has a right to protect its people and land well that is what our people across the US and Canada did we yet we were branded as savages, barbaric for defending our land and people almost completely being wiped out plus losing 98 percent of our original homeland.

The UK is rapidly going loopy. It's not quite so bad here in Scotland, but it ain't great. The media has truly lost the plot, as have so many in political parties.
