Not sure how he misses at around 1:11:00 that the SCA Volvo70 training boat is the one he is looking at and the Volvo65 that is racing is the other boat right next to it. :-P
+AKorigami That is the J-class H1 "Lionheart" a modern version of the J class designed by Sparkman and Stephens in 1936. The J class boats are a racing class. Lionheart is 143 feet long, or 40 meters.
Highly noticeable is the consant and relentless over referencing to SCA as "the girls boat" or "the women's boat". You would have thought that after Tracy Edwards in Maiden all the way back in '89 that over time this kind of unthoughtful commentary would have been reined in.
The starting inshore race through the starting gate...the commentators are going on like this actually matters. The have over 30,000 miles to go. I think this silly game at the start is stupid. Nothing but TV time for sponsors.
Almost everything the "expert" commentators said about the start was dead wrong. The 'girls' --women? -- were discounted at the start, so was Brunel. This 'girls' bit is so annoying. Is this because only 'boys' should ocean race? And by the way, I'm a man (boy?)
Excellent commentary but can you please, PLEASE stop referring to the women on SCA as 'girls.' According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “woman” is defined as “an adult female human being. The counterpart of man." I think we all agree these sailors are the counterpart of the males racing.
I completely agree! If the women on team SCA are to be referred to as the "girls" going forward then all the other team members should be referred to as the "boys" - I don't think it would fly with any of them! These women are professional athletes, lets show them the respect they deserve.
molevista Yah... I can think of a couple other groups that refer to themselves using words I don't dare use. But you do have a good point, their opinion is the only one that matters.
Oren Connell Haha, sailors that have a bad mouth? Never heard of that. ;D Anyway, I really hope the team SCA wins. They ARE 100% professionals and I admire their guts.
