I'm surprised, they are all using the huge genaker for upwind, although the pointing angle gets quite lousy. Are these boats really so much faster with this sail upwind to compensate the much longer distance??
It's a code 0 sail not a genaker. These kind of sails are designed for very tight reaching. In light wind conditions speed become important. And with such a huge sail thay can achieve speed for sure.
Also, for VO65 boats code 0 became an all purpose sail. They have one more code 0, a fractional one, which is for stronge winds. While their code 3 spinaker is for downwind in moderate conditions only.
***** Yeah just approximate. Not sure how they got the boat off the shoal like that. I was interested in how they approached a challenge like that, but it seems they got it going. Interesting to see the honeycomb design.
