Well meaning NHS leg ulcer nurses are still treating venous leg ulcers just like they did one hundred years ago. You shouldn’t be just managing the symptoms, you need to be advising them that they can have the underlying cause treated and referring them to a Vascular Service. I had two large incompetent truncal veins and four incompetent perforator veins treated at a specialist vein clinic in London by a Vascular Specialist, who is also a Vein Scientist (Phlebologist) it was the best money I ever spent after suffering with horrific venous ulcers through a past, long misdiagnosed DVT in my left leg and I haven’t looked back since. I have met people who have suffered forty years with venous leg ulcers, going back and forth to one of these clinics, who are now cured because of my experience. Incidentally I was rated a C6, which was just about the worst you could get. The Professor who’s clinic I had my treatment at actually pioneered Laser surgery and performed the first surgery in 1999. The NHS has this procedure written into their NICE Guidelines yet they will not offer it to any of these poor leg ulcer suffering patients. Even if they did offer it the NHS do not employ Phlebologists they only employ general Vascular Surgeons who are NOT Phlebologists and are unable to work on Perforator veins. It really is a travesty because the NHS spends 3 billion per year on these clinics, which is an absolute travesty.

Unfortunately I think in medical terms, the words they use are complaints. If you look at dr notes in electronic medical records, it will say list of complaints as far as the visit. If you say no to a question, the dr will say patient denies x, y, z. It's unfortunate they use the word in this way but medicine has a long history and back then you wouldn't see a dr unless you had a problem. Suggest other words...

@@HektorBandimar same. I been to two vascular surgeon one in 2021 but it was so rushed I felt uneasy and postponed it. He closed his practice 2 months later. Next one I waited 6 months for. I only got to see the nurse. That was Jan he sent me a letter in March saying he no longer works for hospital. I don't know what to do

@@toma.6942 I saw a vascular surgeon and he said there was nothing that could be done to improve the redness and skin condition in my lower legs, he prescribed me surgical support socks up to my knees, fat lot of good that did.

@@HektorBandimar I don't have that yet I have varicose veins... But I'm very apprehensive about the procedures to remove. When I hear stuff about cvi and amputation I get really scared to be honest. Vitamin e cream can help any moisturizer Vaseline I read can help

There are now treatments out there that can cure or at least greatly improve venous insufficiency. It’s a shame that many do not know this.

How often does varicose veins end in amputation? If you have cvi

@@toma.6942there are now procedures available that can cure or the very least HUGELY improve CVI. I have had this done after mine was caused through a long misdiagnosed blood clot in my left leg through the contraceptive pill. Look up Professor Mark Whiteley.

Did u ever go to a vascular surgeon? So it's definitely not worth getting older with this asking for my own sake

I'm in California, USA, having radio-frequency ablation of the great saphenous vein treatments. Just had the first of what I think will be two on the left leg and one on the right. Hoping for the best. It's done on an out-patient basis and takes about one hour. I didn't need any pain medicine, but it was offered. Maybe something you can get. Like you, I have Afib, for which I take a blood thinner. I've also got PAD that was treated with stents. Lots going on when we're lucky enough to get old!

Let’s hope you have the correct veins identified and treated. Many vascular doctors can only treat large truncal veins, and most of the time this will suffice, but if you also have perforator (small veins) damage and they are not treated at the same time, your problem will only come back. I hear many times ‘I had laser treatment but it did not work’ that is the reason, because the correct damaged veins have failed to be identified. I’m from the UK and have been through all this. Our NHS failed to identify the correct veins to be treated and it did not work. I discovered that our NHS does not employ Phlebologists (vein scientists) they only employ vascular surgeons who can only work on large veins. I ended up having to pay privately at a clinic in London, completely independent of our NHS. In 2018 I had Endovenous laser ablation therapy together with Transluminal Occlusion of 4 damaged Perforators, followed 8 weeks later by ultrasound foam guided sclerotherapy. Best money I ever spent and have not looked back.

Make sure it's treated by a vein specialist. So e vascular surgeons only treat arteries mostly. I've heard some scary stories after treatment

I'm 41 and I'm just diagnosed. Apparently it was there silently building up until my legs started swelling every day now. I too need a lot of help right now .

I am not sure. I am just taking my time to learn my body's responses to the condition. I removed peanut from my diet because I believe it has a negative effect on the condition. Otherwise, I just play some football now and then to increase blood flow and watch it. Otherwise I just ignore it since i am not sure how to get rid of it . And I don't want to be stressing over it either.

Do you mean oedema (or edema in American English). Hopefully your Doctor can diagnose if the oedema is caused by venous disease and if it is prescribe the correct compression therapy. Doctors can also check if there is a systemic cause for any swelling. Is it worse in one leg or are both legs swollen?

Your doctor should be sending you for an Endovenous Duplex Scan. Then determine which veins need treatment. If the underlying cause is treated you should not need compression. I’m from the UK and have been through all this and more. Unfortunately here in the UK very few patients get sent to expert doctors who do these scans that show that your venous insufficiency can be cured. Thus the end up just being offered compression hose or if they have ulcers end up having maggots or honey, which only effects the surface and not the underlying cause.
