Colonel Frans Fourie speaks to us about his 18 years in South African Special Forces. He passed Selection in 1978 and by 1995 was the commander of 1 Reconnaissance Regiment and before that, acting 2IC of 4 Recce. During his career, he went on many operations, mostly with the seaborne specialists, 4 Recce. Some were spectacular, like Ops Kerslig where he won the Honoris Crux and many more. His list of decorations besides the Honoris Crux (HC) is the Southern Cross Medal (SM), Military Merit Medal (MMM), Honourably Mentioned in Dispatches, Pro-Patria Medal, Southern Africa Medal, General Service Medal, Unitas Medal, Good Service Medals (Bronze 10 years and Silver 20 years) and Commendation Certificates from Officers Commanding Special Forces, 4 Special Forces and Chief of the Army.
In this two-hour-plus episode, he speaks of his time with 1 Recce as well as the Military Academy. It is fascinating as he talks of famous operations, especially Ops Kerslig, and much more, also answering viewers questions on episode 2. In the next episode, we look at his time with 4 Recce. Colonel Fourie has the best way of telling his story that it's addictive to the listener. I was lucky enough to have served in the navy at the end of the era and had the honor of working with (briefly) with the chaps from durbs and langebaan. Thanks again and pls don't stop at 3

Gentlemen, cannot wait for the next one. As the colonal said, at 4 recce his career as operator exploded. This one will be of special interest as I am an ex Langebaaner and had 2 operators as immediate neighbours. Won't mention any names but they both took part in Argon. My wife worked at 4 Recce and yes guys, it was her duty to make sure that the liquid refreshments of your choice were always in abundant supply. She had an important job. 😁😁 Like I said, cannot wait for the next one. God bless.

Yes Koos. He must be able to relate to something that happened at the Panoramic Hotel in Langebaan. We all referred to that hotel as the Rama Panic Hotel. Yep the good old days of the Hut and The Tropics. I'm sure he will be able to tell us a story or two. God bless Derek

What a wonderful humble warrior-a real credit to S A’s armed forces! As an aside my wife and I were married in Salisbury in 1975 and went to Malawi on honeymoon, proudly wearing bellbottoms only to encounter a problem at Blantyre and my wife had to sit in the only toilet stapling our trousers legs , whilst I was hiding outside wearing only my underpants until she finished my pants! Hi André. This specific Era is before my time. What I do know is people like Chris Schullenburg, Tim Calloway, André Diedericks, Jack Greef, AO1 Koos Moorcroft was the leaders in the field. People like Neves, Koos Sadler, Sam Fourie, Klein Jakes, Costa, Tony Vieira, Swart Piet Swanpoel, Rieme, Meno Uys all participated, there are more. Guts and tenacity taught most of the guys the most and experience. Kind regards, Frans

Good evening Andre. Thank you for the question. In Dec of first year I toured Malawi. Significant in my next episode. Holiday breaks at Mil Academy I deployed either with 4 or 1 Recce. Training UNITA assisting UNITA in ambushes and other minor operations. No, skills were not lost. Brgds Frans

Koos is there a possibility that the colonel can talk about operation Argon with the submarine and my question is why didn't the recce or special forces go back and retrieve the recce that was captured on that operation

@Wayde, I believe that the survivors of that Ops might talk to us one day but there is a lot that might never be revealed here for obvious reasons. How my system works is that SF decides who comes to us and when they do so. I am just grateful for them taking the time. Koos

Good morning Willem. I had a look at SW's part you refer to. As mentioned previously, I never had "privy" to what SW is referring to there. Yes, I did say that head must have had an influence on the mechanism cutting through the lead faster?! I am not aware of the mine being taken off to pull the pin, this is new to me. I am not going to get involved in a "debate" over what SW has said. All operators that was one KERSLIG had training on the churches that was used. What really caused the tradgic event remains unclear. Speculation is not going to get us anywhere. Kind regards, Frans
