To be fair, the Genex Recycled + Machine Dupe combo is a surprisingly efficient way to effortlessly create any non-archetype tuner restricted level 3-9 synchro, but the problem lied within the fact that Genex synchro monsters suck ass. Which, hilariously, means that a Genex synchro-focused deck using almost any non-Genex synchro is the best way to use them, sometimes to jaw-droppingly good effect.
All those swarming can actually be used to link summon, got someone fucked my ass up with those R-Genex Extra Link back then when Goblin still a thing.

Here are two lists I've currently got, both are kinda unoptimized, though the second one is moreso. The first list is focused around the fact that Undine, Summoner Monk, and Turbo all enable some decent degree of 1- or 2-card link-4 plays, while also containing the Blastfan Dupe combo for when it happens to be useful. The side deck contains handtraps and Evenly Matched for in a match game where I know I'll be going second, and the cards needed to make Undine a 1.5-card King Calamity on the opponent's turn are there for when I know I'm going first (my luck is really bad so I can't afford to main the latter due to Plaguespreader being a pseudo-Garnet and the other three parts taking up a lot of Extra Deck space). The second decklist is the only pre-Needlefiber MR4 decklist I have for Genex, featuring Crystron Rion to make extra use of Rosenix by allowing it to force itself into the gy at the cost of a normal summon if I open it, and a Symphonic engine for two reasons. For one, the extra normal summon is absolutely amazing in a deck where half the cards have on-normal summon effects, and for two, if you open with both scales, or Guitaar+Birdman, you can then begin pendulum summoning so as to get the many things you searched onto the field and so as to SS Blastfan more. As a side note, it's also the only way I've found to summon Vindikite efficiently. Compared to the first list, the Symphonic one doesn't run the Machine Dupe combo since it can spam decently enough already and it felt bricky during testing. In both decks, the only things searchable by Blastfan are the Tuners, since the other dark maindeck Genex cards are exceptionally bad (besides kinda Duradark but even he's super-situational). The three copies of Red Resonator are somethig I'm still unsure about the viability of, but being a pre-Needlefiber list, it becomes really easy to run out of Tuners, plus an instant Coral Dragon is pretty nice in casual duels. It was an arcade-style machine where you pay $1, get a Duel Terminal card that could be scanned by the machine (when it was working), and play some weird mini-games or a slimmed-down duel. In a way, it was like a proto Duel Links type duel. Not every card was in the game, just the one appearing in Duel terminal sets for the most part. Check either the wiki or TCGplayer for Duel terminal sets and you get an idea of what was in them.
A year later, I finally get the point of Bellflame- it's Genex Lorebot. He's fucking indirect Neo Flamvell support. Think about it- somewhat out-of-place FIRE effect, banishing from the opponent's Graveyard, shitty burn effect . . . it's all there!
The first genex synchro were named after different power sources. Hydro - Hydro electric plants Geo and thermal - Geothermal power plants Windmill - Wind farms recognized by having many windmills

That's the thing though: Genex are a surprisingly competent synchro spamming deck...but their own archetypical synchro monsters are complete trash and they're ironically better off summoning any synchro monsters not in their archetype. In fact, the funniest thing is that the War of the Worthless tournament showed that they're good at summoning Trishula of all things.
@@joshuakim5240 Which is worse that the Archetype that Trishula is apart of has trouble summoning it. Trishula is a solid level 9 synchro to be fair but two cards used to summon it is way better than Ice Barriers means if they can get to level nine easily.
26:45 Well, since all forms of Genex were designed to be used in a closed Duel Terminal format in a mix with other Terminal archetypes, this is just an excellent example of that. Reliever is indeed intended to function with Naturia. Not that it works well with them or something, Genex is just MEANT to complement the other archetypes rather than function on its own.

The reason why Solar and Army are super detached from the rest of the archetype is because according to the LOOOREEE, they started to make more aggressive Genex machines to defeat the Worms. So basically we have another Flamvell Magician situation on our hands .

Yeah because they created a lot of cards that can actually replace BYWD for the most part. Maybe the only aspect that is required from BYWD compared to the other support monsters is the fact that he is Normal. It's actually the case of Skull Servant too, even though they aren't really competitive (they still get wins). There are a bunch of cards that have their names considered as Skull Servant, which means you (almost) don't have to run the original Skull Servant in your Deck. I didn't mention Dark Magician and Red-Eyes/Summoned Skull, but they are pretty much the same. Getting cards that have the same name, same stats and all but are more fresh in terms of effect is an easy way to pump up those kind of Decks.
+Lord Hades The great thing about Red-Eyes is that most of its support cards work on better cards than REBD, such as Red-Eyes Wyvern and Paladin of Dark Dragon both working on the fast and powerful Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, and the one card that actually requires running the original REBD, Red-Eyes Fusion, is supremely powerful and fishes REBD straight from the Deck, and since it can Fusion Summon a Fusion Monster that can put a dead REBD back into the Deck, you can run a whole playset of Red-Eyes Fusion with only one REBD in your Deck! :D
+Michael Archer Red Eyes Archfiend doesn't work (superbly useless card) since Geminis aren't treated as normal monsters in the deck. So only if you summon it.
+Yash Farooqui I was actually talking about the deck focusing on Red Eyes' Fusions. And Red Eyes Archfiend isn't that useless once you get him in the hand, grave or field, and his destruction effect can be handy if you've already used up Raigeki, and he's revivable by Return of the Red Eyes, Red-Eyes Spirit and Blazing Meteor Black Dragon so that's something.
bellflame can be used in a shitty OTK. You have to control Bellflame and King TIger Wanghu, as well as have treeborn frog in your graveyard, while you control no s/t's as well as have shien's spy in hand. In your SP, summon frog, king pops frog, Bell gets a counter, keep repeating this until bell has an ungodly amount of counters. Switch him to DEF mode, and play Shien's spy, go to battle phase, have king tiger attack Bellflame, as bellflame hits graveyard he checks the counters on the field. and burn's your opponent for game. Like i said, shitty.
... Except Bellflame says it burns "your opponent", and when you switch control of it to your opponent, that now means "you". Basically do what you said, except use the spy to give your opponent Whangu and crash into it with Bellflame.
Bellflame's last effect doesn't trigger until it's in the Graveyard, making "your opponent" be the opponent of the Graveyard it's in. Just like how "you" in generic searchers such as Pyramid Turtle is the player whose Graveyard it's in, making those searchers nice Creature Swap targets. Regardless, I do agree it's best to just give Wanghu instead.

After years of thought on the subject, rata isn't wrong. He doesn't think they are the worst just because of quality but of the sheer quantity of unusable cards. And if you think about it the genex player only used 5-6 genex cards out of the 42. Probably because even he couldn't find a place for the rest. Also since the a lot of the other players in the war of the worthless were questionable in the primary bracket, I can't really blame rata here.

playing around with pure genex on reverse of arcadia and yeah, there are barely any monsters you can properly run pure. from what I can see the archetype is SUPPOSED to be splashed into other deck like tumors (though if it's super early YGO you can get big beaters assuming your opponent's deck does die to a deck focused on 1800+ beaters). play it pure and you eventually see a few problems, though a level 1 is nice with the like 2 of the genex ally synchros since it potentially gives you more than 1 effects. but on the flip side reverse of arcadia's NPCs mostly run garbage decks so it's AOK.
Going by the magical, archetype-dictating lore of Duel Terminal, it makes sense why Genex have strange effects. In DT they were literally just little minions that served the other DT archetypes to the death. Thus why Blastfan and Birdman work well with Mist Valley, Reliever is just Naturia support and why Bellflame basically has a Neo Flamvell effect. Also explains why Triarm and Triforce have suspicious effects that scream "Ally of Justice" and "Worm".
This archetype really annoys me, because I see a much better idea behind it. Gene being an operating unit to power up different machines to do different things could have been cool, like cycling through various monsters, on an assembly line of some sorts to end up at a genex controlled megazord or a factory or 3 different robots that buff all activated genex machines.
I don't play Yugioh but find bad card design fascinating. That being said, can someone explain why Genex Furnace and Genex Army are bad? From what I have gathered, tributing monsters is a chore so it seems like being able to normal summon without a tribute is pretty efficient and the prevention of Genex Army seems like a solid effect to remove a potentially problematic trap or counter play. Granted their base stats seem like junk but their utility doesn't seem that bad.
Furnace's pathetic stats and lack of real utility make it completely irrelevant. You can compare it, for example, with Super Quantum Red Layer - Same stats, same attribute, same level, better summoning condition. Army is kinda hard to explain why it's bad to people who are not familiar with the game. On the surface, it seems neat because you get a relatively strong monster and get to pop a card, but the thing is that it's just way too slow for what it does (requiring a tribute to pop a card once) and there are many better ways you could be going about your card advantage.

Adding to this, Furnace's ATK is 2000. There are quite a few monsters that require no tribute to begin with and have that ATK. Army doesn't fit with the overall deck strategy at all, because Genex isn't about Tribute Summon, and even then, it's strictly worse than the various Monarchs, who all have effects along the same line, better stats, and can be used in any Deck. They're almost strictly worse than splashing Gene-Warped Warwolf and Caius the Shadow Monarch in (if you don't mind not getting the oh-so-amazing Genex support). As for attack boosts, in general, attack boosts are certainly handy (especially as non-battle protection is becoming increasingly common), but in general, the primary usage for an attack boost is "getting over" problematic monsters, and a 500-point boost is far too small to help with that. It either needs to be an incidental effect on a card that can do other stuff (such as the Qliphort Pendulums, which have a small attack boost but an impressive set of Scales) or so drastic that just playing it is a sign of a comeback (such as Limiter Removal, which doubles the ATK of all your Machines).
I remember long ago there was a combo for Genex to go off: Divine Wind of Mist Valley , Blastfan, Birdman. Though to be fair, it was because Mist Valley was at 3 and the deck didn't go "full genex". Basically Mist Valley >> Genex.
If they added support cards to this archetype like spell, traps, and some more monsters, then this could possibly make for a cool deck. I really love this archetype, it's a shame that it never got any support cards.
I feel like this archetype would be a fan-made one that was posted on Deviant Art and the Konami PR department showed this to the card designers and they didn't care enough to look at the cards before approving them.
You see, something you said about Konami wanting you to splash them in other decks might not be wrong. Think about it, Reliever was probably meant to combo with Naturias' negation effects, Bellflame was probably meant to combo Neo Flamvells' graveyard banishing effects, Undine could work as a Foolish Burial for Water decks, etc. I'm not saying they're any good at that, but still, it might explain why they don't support each other much nor have spells/traps of their own. Plus, it fits their role in the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!
Apparently Genex Spare was used to control Ally of Justice Field Marshal in the Duel Terminal lore and later became Evilswarm Coppelia. Also, it's female.
I really love this series of videos. They're funny, but so comprehensive and well-researched. It takes me back to when I was in high school and some local folks were still trying to make these archetypes viable, myself included. It's great to be able to try to revisit my logic with some of these decks, Genex included. What are your plans for future archetypes to review? Are there any more recent archetypes you would want to talk about, like Zexal-era onward? Are Vylons in consideration? Sorry for all my questions but I really enjoy your videos!! Keep it up!
I think they should get some spell/trap support and some of the monsters could have been better as spell/trap like R-Genex Accelator could have been a continous spell
That Fig and the genex them is helping out the other duel terminal archetype's hence all the weird and inconsistent effects they are supposed to be put into the x-sabers, ice barriers, mist valley, and flamvell

Well, i'll do the fixing part, or at least try. First, make the synchros have better effects, with an emphasis on versatility as a group. Second, make it easier to spam Controller and Controller equivalents alongside appropriate material to facilitate your Synchro toolbox style. Third, just give them some freaking S/T support, they need it with the lack of a shared ANYTHING among the originals. That's not even getting into the Real or Allies who have no real, snrrk, reason to exist, unless we were also improving AoJ and giving them some neat stuff at the same time.
Here's what I would to to fix them (in their current state): > Give Genex the potential to Synchro toolbox properly and have it be worthwhile. The Genex Synchros are pretty mediocre already, so give them like a Field Spell that lets you tweak a Genex's Levels and Attributes at will, at the cost of only Synchro Summoning Genex Synchros for the turn. It would make their Synchro Summoning more consistent and actually reward you for playing the underwhelming Genex Synchros. > Actually reward people for playing Genex Controller. As said, no reason to play the *main card of the archetype* anymore. Something like "OPT, you can Special Summon 1 Controller from hand or Graveyard", or "When a Genex Synchro dies, SS 1 Controller from Deck, Hand or Graveyard". Once again, preferably on a Field Spell. > Give them swarming potential, preferably with their Tuner Monsters. May overlap with the point above. > Give them a proper boss monster. Ritokure I have been thinking on this. not long mind you ,but for thier spell and traps could be focused on changing opponents attributes, increase their atk/def, recover tuners from the gravyard, and thier own archetype version of double summon.
I would like to point out that Shaddolls now have a few cards that have to do with banishment! RATA continues to give Konami ideas and I now fully expect an announcement for Startellerknight Pollen
I used to run Genex back in the day, mainly the beginning of the ZEXAL era. Building them right, they can be decent. The main thing you forgot to mention is the Power Planner -> Birdman combo, which allows you to search all your Birdmans out of a single monster. Coupled with Photon Thrasher, you can make consistently Genex Ally Triforce very oftenly with the LIGHT effect, which is severely underrated. Yes, it is a face-down Summon, but it is the only thing that balances a FREE Reborn OPT for LIGHTs. Birdman would be banished on the Synchro Summon due to its effect, perfect for retrieving with Dimensional Alchemist, also a Level 4 LIGHT which can be retrieved via Triforce. Yeah, it was kinda janky and wasn't exactly a pure Genex deck, but honestly, it was really consistent and could spam Synchros pretty easily, on top of having enough LIGHTs and DARKs to go into the Chaos route. It also only required Thrashers, Level 3 Genex Tuners and 1~2 Power Planners, meaning I had some extra space to do other stuff if I wanted to. I went the Cyber Dragon route, which synergized well and gave me access to Level 8s as well. Of course, now with Birdman Limited, Genexes are back in the "worthless" territory. The only thing they have going now is easier access to Vindikite (which is pretty good TBH, one-card attack lock that replaces itself with a search is not bad) but nothing that can be even remotely salvageable into a deck.
Genex Edits: Little long but It’s fixing everything in the original Genex archetype, spaced out to recognize each card. Made to work well with R-Genex and Genex Ally if that ever is to happen. Genex Spare: 1200/1400 DARK/3/Machine/Tuner/Effect: This card is treated as Genex Controller on the field and in your graveyard. Genex Searcher: 1500/800 EARTH/4/Machine/Effect Genex Blastfan: 1500/1100 WIND/4/Machine/Effect (Searcher and Blastfan now combo off each other) Genex Turbine: 1400/1400 DARK/4/Machine/Effect: All “Genex” monsters you control gain 500 atk. Genex Furnace 2000/1500 FIRE/5/Machine/Effect: If you control a “Genex Controller” you can special summon this card. (Better for obvious reasons) Genex Gaia 1000/1900 EARTH/4/Machine/Effect: If a Genex Controller would be destroyed, you can banish this card from the field, hand, or graveyard instead. On the turn this card is banished, Genex monsters cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. Genex Undine 1000/1500 WATER/3/Machine/Effect: When this card is normal or special summoned by the effect of a “Genex” card, you can send 1 “Genex” or WATER monster from your deck to the graveyard and add 1 “Genex Controller” from your deck to the hand. (Genex Solar) Genex Solar (new artwork) 2500/2000/LIGHT/7/Machine/Effect: Can special summon from your hand or graveyard by tributing one “Genex Controller”. If this card is destroyed by battle, you can add a DARK level 3 or lower tuner from your deck to your hand. If you special summon a "Genex" monster or Synchro Summon using a "Genex Controller", that summon cannot be negated, and they cannot be targeted or destroyed by card effects until the end of the turn. (my field spell) Genexic Reprogramming (Continuous Trap): Special summon 1 level 5 or lower “Genex” monster from your graveyard. When you do, you can change its attribute while this card is on the field. If this card is removed from the field, destroy the special summoned monster, If the special summoned monster is removed from the field, destroy this card. You can banish this card from your graveyard and target 1 machine-type monster and change its attribute. Modified several of the cards work better together, made the synchros better and easier to use, added several card effects that help with synergy, and added a field spell to make combos easier to pull off.
I think a good field spells would fix Genex's problem but honest I this is an archetype that would benefit from 3-4 archetype specific Pendulum monsters. One for each shitty sub archetype if they want to. That way they can ignore spells and traps yet give them amazing monsters with great effects when placed in the pendulum zone that can give them some god forsaken chance to summon all of their buddies easily. Genex Pendulum monster: Honestly just give them a Genex specific Scout at scale 1/2 or 6/7. Except instead of searching out any Genex you can just fetch Genex Controller once per turn. Or better yet make it similar to Guitaars and special summon them. R-Genex Pendulum: Monster: Maybe further support pendulum summon by having its effect go off during a pendulum summon where it can adjust levels. With a scale of 1/2 or 6/7. Genex Ally Pendulum: It shouldn't be related to AoJ monsters at all. Fuck any light based effect. Just give it a P-Effect that allows you to change the Attributes of one of your Genex monsters once per turn. With a scale of 1/2 or 6/7 The scale 1/2 and 6/7 ensure you can even summon their shit high level monsters and even afford playing at least one Solar if you care that much
Ooooooh boy, back in the day, when I got back into yugioh for the first time, I thought Genexes were supposed to be like Top Tier and the shit. Turns out it's just shit. Why did I think this? Because all the Genex cards I saw other people using were holographic and the card art was very pretty and complicated-looking, and that instantly made me think it had to be the best. I was not a smart player. Then again, I did end up going with Frogs for my main archetype, and they ended up treating me pretty well.

@@DeltaPJ Winning 1 singular non-competitive tournament of like 16 people with each deck only being ran once does not make it the best of the worst, it's very much a fluke.You can't determine what LOTW deck is better from that tournament because each deck was only ran by 1 person, which is not how it works in reality, if the tournament were bigger with more people running a deck than just 1 person then the results would mean something.
