Legato Patterns with Pentatonics (Guitar Lesson SC-025) How to play

In this guitar lesson I show you how to use some legato patterns to speed up your pentatonic scales and get some cool licks. I go through one pattern in detail and then just show you another 5 that you can explore for yourself.
Find the related course notes on the following link:
justinguitar.co...
I got taught these patterns by my teacher many years ago, but a few guys have sent me links that the main pattern here is also taught by Paul Gilbert in his video called Intense Rock II. He plays it way better than me too. I'm pretty sure you can't copyright licks anyway, but I feel I should credit Paul Gilbert here because he was almost certainly the origin of these licks (via my teacher). So if you want some more even more intense licks then look up his video - it's pretty amazing.
So I emailed Paul to check he wasn't going to be pissed about my use of the lick. His reply:
"I haven't copyrighted any pentatonic licks, but I do own F# on the 11th fret of the G string exclusively.
Rock and Roll, Paul"
What a dude. So all you kids, check out the lick, but NO PLAYING F# on the 11th FRET - OK!!! Or else ;)
There is TAB for the licks and the patterns on the web site - you probably wanna check that out - will make them easier to learn...

Whoa, watched this 6 months ago and said, can't do it. Just 15 minutes ago I learned the 5 Pentatonic Scales and watched this through once and got it all. You cover everything necessary to let me play how I want while using multiple skills to achieve it!

Thanks man. Great lesson, but you should also approach the picking hand. It's very important and sometimes is the main reason that people stuck in those patterns. Good Job!

Wow, I'm actually surprised how easily I picked up on the picking pattern! And according to your site your preferred picking pattern was the same as mine so that's awesome... I'm sure everybody who watches your videos LITERALLY get better video by video. Awesome lesson per usual, Justin ;)

HEY JUSTIN! One thing is niggling me.. When You do those hammer-ons and pull-offs with Your 3rd finger do You also move Your 2nd finger intentionally (put it on the string)?? Putting it another way: do You use Your 2nd all the time or add it only to bend/vibrato at the end of these licks? I think it's important when it comes to gaining speed. I'll be grateful for Your feedback. Greetings:)

leave this video up ur just giving good ol' guitar tuition that many great guitar play4ers have replicated over the years it doesn't matter who "invented" them...the notes were alr3eady there before the player realized they work good together

Great lesson as usual! Who cares about the pinky deal!! To each his own! And who's Paul Gilbert anyway?Is he a cool dude giving fantastic free guitar lessons on RU-vid regularly and deserving all of his viewers' respect,tolerance and appreciation for all the efforts he makes for us to improve our skills?Do we really need to tell Justin,he's not the inventor of a pattern and that he needs to use his pinky, or just shut up and practice being thankful for his help?Do I need to answer this here :)?

Hey Justin, just a side question. You are the first person to refer to pull-offs (which I'm used to hearing them as) as flick-offs. Is it common to say flick-offs instead of pull-offs where you are?

That's a Paul Gilbert lick from his second teaching CD. Maybe a coincidence. It is a nice pattern.
@taradead
@taradead 11 лет назад
at 5:55 you move the pattern to box 4 where it has that awkward finger shift. To avoid that shift/increase speed, one can substitute the same pattern as used for boxes 1 and 3...the notes will still work. Granted, it's no substitute for the finger dexterity you'll learn doing it the way shown in the video, but can make for an exponentially much faster sequence.

Justin why does the patern change when you moved down a whole step in the patern? Im not getting that concept. Is it cause your in the key of E and that is part of the extended scale?

I ilke the licks as always, but I really miss the "proper" use of the pinky in a lot of your vids. I do understand bending is easier with a finger instead of the pinky, but pinky is very usefull for the fourth position notes.

Copyrights for guitar licks now that is sick. OK a few months ago I thought about starting a chocolate biz.
