Coming up, the story of a rock record that we all owned. Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi was the pinnacle of glam metal and hard rock... in the 80s you couldn’t escape it if you tried. And it came from a rock band who more than paid their dues to make it. Bon Jovi did every job under the sun to make it. The record sold over 12 million copies on the strength of 3 massive hits. (You Give Love) a Bad Name, Livin’ On a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive…. the #1 hit that kicked the album off was a rocker that grabbed you by the throat from the first vocal but it was originally a disco song that was written for famous female singer Bonnie Tyler. But once these rockers put their stamp on it no one could fathom it being a disco pop song. Another of these hits was written in the basement of the guitarist’s mom… a masterpiece about the demons of fame. Wanted Dead or Alive... It was a warning sign of the back-breaking extremities of life on the road and years after the mega success of the record it became so overwhelming that this frontman was ready to end it all… So was this song a prophetic glimpse into this band’s future? With the help of an iconic rock producer Bob Rock, we’re going to find out… The many adventures of Bon Jovi starring Jon Bon Jovi, Ritchie Sambora, and the band!

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time if you played night games as a kid like Kick the Can, or Steal the Flag you’ll dig this channel of musical nostalgia make sure to subscribe blew to know when our interviews drop.
Today’s album was owned by most of the people watching today… it sold over 12 million copies in America starting in 1986 into 1987 with 4 big hits including 2 that hit #1. Even if you didn’t have the record you heard it. But today we’re going to take a different look at the songs…so please open your mind and watch even if you’re not a fan of the band because it’s quite a story. We are going to cover 2 of the three hits. Not the obvious one, which is easily one of the most popular songs ever recorded and one of the most overplayed as well. Instead, we will focus on the 1st and 3rd singles on this record which are just massive but not as overplayed. And we have a legendary producer to give us insight into the record since he engineered it. It's Bon Jovi and their classic hits Wanted Dead or Alive and You Give Love a Bad Name from their multi-platinum mega-hit Slippery When Wet.
It was a tireless work ethic, relentless ambition, and a take-no-prisoners tenacity that propelled Jon Bon Jovi from sweeping floors in Jersey to fronting one of the highest-grossing tour bands of all time. Bon Jovi would pay their dues to become global superstars, and then pay some more as they fought to stay on top. So let’s set it up.
John Francis Bongiovi Jr first met bandmate, David Bryan, at Sayreville High School in New Jersey. They played in various local bands and then moved to New York. To make some money and network with the music biz, Jon got a job at his cousin Tony Bongiovi’s recording studio called The Power Station. Where Jon worked as a gopher, sweeping floors and running errands. it was hard work. But it was a good move. Because after saving up some money, Jon hired some studio musicians to record a demo.

I attended one of those fabulous concerts!! I was blown away by his talent. My daughter had passed away the year before. My older daughter decided we needed to go see the girls favorite band. I was so numb I just agreed. I had never been to a concert before. From the moment John hit the stage I was mesmerized. It pulled me out of myself and filled me with some of the best music I’ve ever heard. Thank you John you allowed me to step out of my grief for a moment in time.

There's a song by the Canadian group Sheriff - "When I'm With You" - that has an incredibly high and incredibly long-lasting F# at the very end. Somewhere around 20 seconds. (He actually belted out the last few notes without taking a breath for about 25 seconds.) I thought the title of this video might be referring to that song. Freddy Curci didn't originally intend to hold the note that long, he was expecting to be faded out when they were recording. But they didn't fade him out, so he kept holding the note until the band finally closed the song. As far as I know, this is still the longest note held by a singer for a song in the top 100.

Freddie Curci of Sheriff and Alias fame. As a professional DJ, the club I worked at back in the day we hosted Sheriff for an entire week. During their Soundcheck on the Monday Night the band played " When I'm With You" and Freddie's vocals on were the same as on the LP. The only other Male Singer that Freddie was vocally close to live was the late Ron Tabak from Prism fame.

I am 51 years old from the Bronx, Ny and what I remember most was how in Sept. of 1986 the buzz in my Junior High School’s lunch room when someone was passing around the cassette tape and saying stuff like “ You have to hear this band”, Etc. EVERYONE loved Bon Jovi, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, kids who did not normally listen to Rock loved them. ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’ just drew you in the minute you heard it.

I was a huge Bon Jovi fan as a teenager. Had him all over my bedroom walls. Seen him in concert 3 times. But it wasn’t until later on in life when I was devastated by a break up and ruining my marriage with adultery. My son wanted to live with his dad. I was sitting in my car alone crying and feeling like I had nothing left in my life that a song from Bon Jovi would come on the radio and it changed me for the better. I’m talking about the song “Thorn in my Side.” I fell in love with Bon Jovi all over again because that song changed my attitude 180 degrees. Thank you Jon Bon Jovi for saving my life. God bless you always.

Bon Jovi are an enigma. Beloved by legions and legions of millions of fans around the world, produced incredible rock music and some of the most memorable songs of the 1980's, 90's and 2000's, musically brilliant and universally appealing. Yet a minority of influential critics created a terrible stigma around them, which was ridiculous. The rock 'establishment' shunned them, only just being accepted into the rock hall of fame a few years back. Ultimately these plebs were proven wrong multiple times over for decades, that the term 'egg on face' doesn't come close to describing what these critics look like to the public.

I (unintentionally) saw Bon Jovi on the Slippery When Wet tour. My friend had tickets for him and his girlfriend, but she broke up with him before the concert and he begged me to go. I told him I wouldn’t pay for the ticket, but I would go to make him happy. I thought BJ were bubblegum and “wussy-rock”. I was not a fan. Well, the concert blew me out of my shoes. They absolutely were great. So great that I bought the cassette (yes, cassette!) the very next day. Have been listening ever since.

Wanted: Dead or Alive is one of my favorite songs to this day. I LOVE how even though it's such a raw, gritty look at the reality of life on the road 24/7, they never come across as whining or complaining or disrespecting their fans, just being honest about it. It makes them relatable as people, not just entertainers.

Naive question here: Do record execs / managers / producers ever consider lowering tour schedules back a notch? I get it... strike while the iron is hot, and make as much buzz and money while you can. BUT... time and time again (thanks to sources like VH1 Behind the Music and PofR =) we see that this ALWAYS ends bad and often with suicide or bankruptcy or overdose (fatal and near fatal). What if... they just managed it slightly better. Giving rest and recovery days here and there. Perhaps that doesn't work as it may throw off momentum or something (yes I'm not the pro here). But, I still have to ask... is there some better way?

I remember first hearing "You give Love a Bad Name" late summer of '86. I thought that was an amazing song and told my friends they were going to be huge. I was familiar with their earlier releases and I liked "Runaway" and "Shot Through the Heart". They pulled the single back and it disappeared. I was really bummed and wondered what happened. People were going to miss this really great song. Then, "Livin' on a Prayer" was released and it EXPLODED. I was still wondering what happened to "You give Love a Bad Name". Finally, they re-released it and it really hit. Truly and amazing album. Raise Your Hands is an epic intro.

Love Bon Jovi. I remember when the album Slippery When Wet was released in 1986. I immediately bought the album. The first 2 songs that were released as singles went to #1 on the pop charts and ushered in Bon Jovi Mania and launched the band into the stratosphere in popularity. I've always said that Bon Jovi did for Glam-Metal what the Bee Gees did for Disco. I'll explain: During the mid-1970's, disco was already popular. When Saturday Night Fever was released in December 1977, it produced 4 #1 songs. It was a cultural phenomenon as the Bee Gees became the most popular musical group and disco became the most popular musical genre. Comparatively, the same can be said in regards to Bon Jovi. Before 1986, Glam-Metal was already popular. The success of Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet exploded, became a phenomenon, took Glam-Metal to another level making it the most popular musical genre. Bon Jovi is one of many great artists that I'm proud to say comes from my home state of New Jersey. Others include Frank Sinatra, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick and I could easily name many more.

Fun fact: Their first big hit Runaway wasn’t actually performed by the band as you know them today. Jon had a song but no band. Session players came in and the legendary guitar player Tim Pierce laid down the rhythm and lead tracks for the song. So when you hear it, it’s not Ritchie playing on the album, he came later when Jon assembled the band.

I couldn't agree more back in 1984 I was in a band we did a mix of hair metal (poison, ratt, crew, bon Jovi) top 40 (The Police, flock of segals, gary Myrick, Eddie money) plus bar dance songs from the 70's our singer had just quit and we had just hired a 17 year old kid to drum for us from day one this kid kept asking if we could learn and do angel eyes by steetheart we told him no every day for 2-3 weeks I kept telling him no one can hit those high notes and our singer had just quit and every time he would say he could sing it of course laughing and insaults would always follow. so one night the drummer, the bassists and myself were waiting on the other guitarist to show up and a singer he was bringing to try out. so I tell the drummer I had learned angel eyes if he wanted to show us his singing skills of course he's all gung-ho so I start playing it when he starts singing we just about fell over this little shit hit every note he really cold sing half way through the other guy shows up with the singer they were stuned we stop playing and the guy that was there to try out said well thanks anyways but this guy is better than me I said that could be but this is our drummer needless to say we found a new drummer he became our singer and was in our band for 6 Years we recorded a few demos of our own songs but could never get a break looking back we probably were not as good as we thought we were but that kid was an amazingly good singer.

At some point in the middle of their performance, Jon was walking around the stage looking for something as Richie jammed away on his guitar. Wanted Dead or Alive is one of my top 10 favorite rock songs of all time. The solo is so powerful and emotional. Sambora may not be Malmsteen or Van Halen but the emotion he speaks through his instrument more than makes up for it. Sometimes gives me goosebumps when I listen to it after not hearing it for a long time.

"Raise Your Hands" without a doubt is the best song Bon Jovi ever created and recorded and put on any album. It is indeed far better than ANY other song on Slippery When Wet. To me it epitomizes the perfect hard rock song from first note to last. Plus it's so much fun and sounds great!! They even had a parody of the music video playing on the jumbotron with Stewart wearing a wig with a headband and all that. At the end, he rides out on his bike wearing the wig and all, dressed like a rock star. The whole stadium erupted. A really cool moment. Bon Jovi IS quintessential Jersey Rock ... Jon ADMITS that it was Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes -- NOT Springsteen -- that fueled his drive to the top ... I was a Jukes fan, not a Springsteen/E-Street fan, because (nothing against Clarence) Southside Johnny had THE hornline (I play trumpet), and the ENERGY of The Jukes is replicated by "Slippery When Wet" and much of the rest of the Bon Jovi catalog ... I was SO HAPPY when Jon credited Southside Johnny Lyons and The Jukes ... it shows that Jon KNEW what was REAL Jersey Rock ...
@mickneals8696

Their first hit, Runaway, was released from the actual demo recording before Jon had hired any of the other musicians. Studio guitarist extraordinaire Tim Pierce played all the guitars on the track. This is important information for all the fans that are wanting Ritchie back and claiming this song as one of the reasons. Ritchie had to be taught the solo that Tim nailed on the song. The next album also featured studio musicians because the team Jon assembled was not quite up to par with working in the studio. As for Phil X, he is an incredible guitarist who can play circles around Ritchie as well as an amazing vocalist. Couple that with the way RS left the band, I believe Phil X has cemented his position in the band.

For myself, and I presume a LOT of people, reality at any age of life is not as pleasant as we would like or expect it to be. When I was a kid, reality was not a happy place. At times as an adult it is not a happy place. Too many rude, unkind, toxic, angry humans. I need inspiration to keep going, we all do. We look for it everywhere, every second, of everyday. With a longing to be needed, wanted, to be loved, to find the light the led me to a strength to get me to the next sunrise and do better, climb out, rise, and achieve. I would take moments from what I could find in books, cartoons, movies, shows, and most of all music. One day, as I sat alone on the living room floor with nothing to eat, waiting for parents to come home from work for hours, and after a harsh day at grade school, I sat. Lonely. Sad. Lost. As I flipped through channels trying to distract myself, pacify the time, to numb me, I stopped... Suddenly up on the screen were these happy guys, smiling, laughing, loving life. I watched this rock'n'roll story unfold before my eyes, the words and melodies lift my spirits and fill me with a sense of strength "you can do it! We all can!" Hope... "Tommy used to work on the docks, he was down on his luck, it's tough, so tough. Gina dreams of running away, she cries through the night" "We've got to hold on to what we've got, it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not" "Late at night and we worked all day, table for two on a t.v. tray, it ain't fancy but that's okay" "Stick to your guns, and ain't nobody gonna hurt you baby. You can go to war but only if you have to." "Boy, stand your ground. You better give it all you've got now, or you might get shot down, fight hard until the battle is won." etc.. etc.. Through many years, so many lyrics, from many songs, the melodies, the rhythmic and powerful drumming. The beautiful piano, the grooving bass, the ripping to romantic guitar, and a team of great vocals. Bon Jovi helped me. To this very day those songs don't remind me of the past, and what negative a thing it can be. Instead, they inspire and remind me, how far I've come, how far we ALL have come. Keep going, we are doing great! Keep moving forward. Stand tall. Work hard. Live. Laugh. Love. Thank you Bon Jovi
